There is a clear bold masthead. This covers the main image therefore telling us that this is not a well know magazine and that is the masthead got covered by the image then it wouldn’t be recognised with covered up letters

This is the main coverline, it tells us about the main image, its big bold and stands out against the background of the dark hair. This is a good way to grab people attention.

These are coverlines, they give you some information about what is inside the magazine and also are in a smaller font as they aren’t there to the attention until the reader picks up the magazine to read the coverlines.

This is a puff, this is used to attract the reader attention by using buzzwords, ‘free’ and ‘exclusive’ they are always in a shape, any sort of shape and you can find them on any genre of magazine.

This is a slogan ‘cutting edge music & style’ this is used also when the magazine advertise, is something that people will relate to there magazine, something catchy.

The barcode is usually located on either of the bottom corners of the magazines front cover. Above it on the black bar is the price, date and issue info this is where it is commonly located.

The mise en scene is what tells and suggests to us the genre, this is one of the most important things, the way it looks and whether you are portraying the correct genre.

Mise en scene is broken down into:Costume: she is wearing a plain vest, its not bright and contrasts with her overall dark lookLighting: the lighting is shining on her left hand side, creating a shadow, adding to the overall gloomy and dark effectActor: she is giving direct mode of address, which draws the readers in. Her overall expression is quite moody and serious, suggesting a rebellious attitude.Make-up: her make-up is dark and is heavy around her eyes which makes them more prominent. Also making them something that you look at first, also on the right had side of her face she has patterns, in black which again suggests a rebellious attitude and perhaps two sides to her character. Props: she has a necklace on with the word ‘destroy’ which is bold, ironically it is split into although she has destroyed it, by biting it possibly as she has it in her mouth. Setting: the setting is a plain background, although magazines do use backgrounds that are a setting, gigs etc... A lot use a plain background to ensure that no attention is taken away from the actor, personally I think a plain back ground makes it more eye catching and the actor is more affective in the sense of catching your attention. The genre is clearly show and obvious, this has be done well and you could clearly tell the genre just from a glance and not knowing who ‘Atari teenage riot’ are.

This is the main image of the magazine cover, two out of three of band member are giving direct mode of address. This is also a technique used to draw the audience in.

This is the masthead of the magazine, the colours, font and size are consistent throughout all the other NME covers.

This is the main coverline, its larger than the other coverlines because its the main feature of the magazine. It also sticks to the colour scheme. Its bright and bold so it will be eye catching to passing readers.

This is a puff, they are using it to display something that is inside the magazine, this is also sticking to the colour scheme and also bold to catch the eye.

This is a skyline, this acts as a banner, it is used to display a feature in the article, not all magazine cover have them. It is also bright, and sticks to the colour scheme. It also there to attract readers.

This is a coverline but a smaller image is also used, not all magazines used the convention on their coverlines, again it is used to draw in the attention of readers. It also sticks to the colour scheme.

The barcode is generally found in the bottom corner of a magazine, you also find issue info, the date and the price here.

This is a slogan ‘new musical express’ this is used also when the magazine advertise, is something that people will relate to there magazine, something catchy.

The mise en scene is what tells us the genre of the magazine, you can tell the genre of the magazines because of these things:Costume: Their dress sense is quite individual so it goes with the genre.Lighting: the lighting is bright, telling us that the music is dark and heavy like rock music.Actor: two of them are giving direct mode of address, this is also used to draw in possible readers, as if they are actually looking at you. They are also all doing something different, their stances.Make-up: they aren’t wearing any.Props: they have no props.Setting: they are on what looks like white wooden double doors. They usually use plain backgrounds when it is a busy magazine. Their stances are a big part of the way we can tell the genre of music, they are stood in an individual and unique way, separating each one of their different characters and the different people, possibly trying to portray that each person is individual and unique and no one should be the same. Also the colour scheme fits the genre because its bright and cheerful and bold. The font is an informal font a font that isn’t serious.

Due to the mise en scene, the colour scheme and the chosen fonts, the genre is clear and has been done very well, and it also looks very professional, personally if I looked at this in a shop I would know straight away what genre the magazine was.

The masthead for Q is bold, large and bright. It is being slightly covered by the main image(large and cover ¾ of the page) which tells us that it must be a well known magazine because if it was covered more and you couldn’t read it all you’d still recognise that it was q magazine as the masthead of any magazine acts as their logo.

This is the main coverline it is larger than any other of the cover lines because it relates to the main image which is the eye catcher for the magazine. Where as the smaller coverlines are just about the features or articles inside aren’t used as the eye catcher for the magazine. It also sticks to the colour scheme.

This is the slogan for the magazine ‘discover great music’ this is used also when the magazine advertise, is something that people will relate to there magazine, something catchy.

This puff has been used to display that its the 300th issue this is also be used as an eye catcher because its bold and uses the buzzword ‘300th’ large to catch your eye. This also fits in with the colour scheme.

The barcode is located in a bottom corner, like the majority of any other genre of magazine. The issue info, price and date are also found here.

The mise en scene is important as it is what portrays the genre to the audience or potential customers. The things that make up mise en scene are:Costume: because of her stance you cant tell what she is wearing.Lighting: the lighting is bright therefore instantly portraying to us that it isn’t a rock or heavy metal magazine.Actor: she is giving direct mode of address, she is catching the audiences eyes and this is a convention used to draw them in and buy the magazine.Make-up: her make-up is largely around her eyes, used to enhance her eyes and make them stand out even more so the direct mode of address convention is more effective.Props: she doesn’t have any props.Setting: she is on a white background i think this makes her expression stand out even more and again her eyes more effect and as if she is really looking at you.

Because of the colour scheme, the informal font style, the way they have portrayed her, as a bit mysterious and edgy and also the codes that make up the mise en scene, I personally believe that the genre is clearly indie/rock. This has been done very well, the magazine looks professional and finish and the layout is also uniformed and very precise and organised.
