Evolution of BroadcastingGuglielmo Marconi – inventor of telegraphy

led to the radio broadcasting almost 100 years back

Major advances in broadcasting media includes television, cable network, internet

Radio was pre-eminent broadcasting medium until NBC started TV broadcasting in 1950.

TV changed the broadcasting landscape, not only with news & information transmitted to people by sound but also by moving pictures, at first in black & white, now in color sets

Evolution of Broadcasting in IndiaIn India broadcasting began with private radio

service in Madras in 1924In 1924 British colonial govt granted a private

company to open radio stations at Bombay & Calcutta as well, soon it went bankrupt & colonial govt took over the 2 transmitters & started operating them as Indian State Broadcasting Corporation, which in 1936 was renamed as AIR

In 1982 TV began to attain national coverage & a pre- eminent media organization.

A spark came in the early 90’s with the broadcast of satellite TV by foreign programmers like CNN followed by Star TV.

By the end of 1994 there were 12 satellite based channels available in India.

Zee Telefilms Ltd. Marked its presence with the inception of the first 24 hour news channel-ZEE NEWS in 1998.

BBC BBC News came on 5 July 1954, broadcast from

leased studios within Alexandra Palace in London.First news channel to go color in the year 1964Producing 120 hours of output daily it is the largest broadcasting news gatherer in the

world. Their network is spread across 200 countries, BBC

News is currently headed by Helen Boaden. BBC maintains its key objective of the Royal

Charter to "collect news and information in any part of the world and in any manner that may be thought fit".

On-screen newsreaders were finally introduced in 1955.

In 1987, John Birt resurrected the practice of correspondents working for both TV and radio with the introduction of bi-media journalism, and 2008 saw tri-media introduced across TV, radio and online.

Also in 1960, Nan Winton, the first female BBC network newsreader, appeared in vision on 20 June, & 19 September saw the start of the radio news and current affairs program The Ten O'clock News.

Summary of Findings There seems to be a standard coverage of

one main story which is dragged on for quite some while.

Financial news channels covering the same stock market i.e BSE and NSE carry different stories and interviews which make it worthwhile to switch between them.

Indian news channels are bound to Indian news and do not show international news or the impact that it has on India.
