A A Quick Lesson on “How to Solder” Lesson on “How to Solder”
Soldering is the joining of metals by a fusion of alloys which have relatively low
melting points
Be VERY careful! Soldering iron is HOT!Tie up your hair! You do not want it hanging
in the way of the hot iron! Wear Safety Goggles at ALL times! Eye protection is VERY important!
1. Apply a very small amount of solder to the soldering iron's tip. This is called tinning. It makes it easier to solder. (Note: This is NOT the solder that will make the connection).
2. Place the part on its correct spot on the board. Bend the leads to hold it in place. Once the component is secured to the board, heat up the component lead and the board.
3. Once heated, touch the solder to the lead and board, NOT to the iron tip.
4. Once solder is applied, stop applying solder and then remove tip. Allow to cool. Once the part has cooled, clip the ends of the part so they don’t stick out far.
Soldering Tips• Keep your iron on the holder when not
using. It WILL burn something if placed somewhere else.
• If you create a solder bridge by accident, you can use copper braid to pull out some of the solder by placing it over the bridge and holding the soldering iron to it for around 10-20 seconds at a time.
Soldering Tips (Continued)• Finally, you do NOT need to push the parts
all the way down onto the board. In fact, it is better if parts such as D1, U1, the transmitter, the speaker and the temperature sensor remain above the board a little. (See pictures as you go along.) Things such as U2, C1 & 2, X1, R1, S1 and the battery snap should be placed as close as they can to the board.
Do NOT let solder bridges to occur. Make sure you put on enough solder to
make the connection but not so much the circuit is shorted. You especially DON’T
want it to look like this!!!

the board and the part, but no bridges either.

1. Plug in soldering iron and place on stand2. Wet sponge if necessary3. Look at circuit board and identify:

4. Throughout assembly process, can bend legs, clip, or tape parts to hold in place

Install R1 and D1Install R1 and D1Step 1: Bend R1 to hold in place. Solder one leg first. Then, reheat the solder and
push all the way through. R1 should be very close to surface
of circuit board.
Step 2: Solder D1 (the LED) in the same manner used for R1. Your circuit
board should now have U2, R1, and D1 components
installed.
CAUTION! D1 (the LED) is direction sensitive. Be sure to
solder the long leg into the positive (+) opening on the
circuit board.

Caution!! U1, the voltage regulator, looks exactly like
the temperature sensor! Look for the label on the
flat side: 78L05
The U1 regulator is direction sensitive. The flat side of the black end should match up
with the flat edge of the white label on the circuit board.

Final Instructions
• In the Buzz-E, the speaker must go where the transmitter would (U3), however it will go in the first two consecutive holes, NOT in the first and the last!
Final Instructions (Continued)• The microcontroller has a little dot on one end, this
end will be the same direction as the notch in the socket. This must be pushed in all the way. (See picture on following slide.)
• Finally, the battery snap must have the red lead going to the positive and the black to the negative. Thread the lead up through the bigger holes on the sides of the + and – and then stick them back down through the + and – holes accordingly. (See picture on next slide).
