■ GOOD NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL , MRS. MIHULKA :

T he Student Government campaign and election process has been taking place during the month. An assembly took place where the candidates

spoke about their vision for the new school year before the voting process. The students voted and we are proud to announce the following officers for the new school year. Congratulations to:

The Intermediate Math Bee (grades 4, 5, and 6) will take place at St. Anastasia school’s Father Smith Hall on Thursday, October 30th at 9 AM. Fifteen of the top Math students will compete (5 from each grade level). Parents of these grade levels are welcome to attend. The winner of this Bee will then compete at the Queens Regional Math Bee scheduled for November 25, 2008 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. The Parish Halloween Party is on Friday, October 24th . A separate communication was sent home with the school children. Tickets are $5. On Friday, October 31st, Grades N to 5 may dress up in Halloween costumes. Children’s costumes should be comfortable and safe for the child to walk in. Your teachers will send home notes on any special activities that they schedule for that day. Grades 6 to 8 may wear a special hat at the discretion of their homeroom teacher and they may dress down. This year, Yankee Candle products were introduced as a new fundraiser. St. A’s annual candy sale begins on Monday, October 27. If anyone in the Parish is inter-ested in either of these, please call the school office.

Progress reports on student’s academic progress will be distributed the week of October 27th on a need basis. Parents are always welcome to request interval progress reports prior to the Report Card distribution date of De-cember 5th.

Become Our Columnist

St. Anastasia Bulletin informs our community about news and events in our parish, cluster and neighbor-hood and in a special way unites us as parishioners. However, there are so many things we could publish if we just shared with others our knowledge, passion or sometimes hobbies. You don’t have to be a doctor, real-tor or lawyer to publish very useful issues. If you like to read, travel or just dine out — you can share with us what you find interesting, inspiring or simply yummy. If you are interested in contributing to our Bulletin in any shape or form, call Fr. Chris at (718) 631-4454 or email at [email protected] divine

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

St. Anastasia Council #5911 is preparing for its Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Council #5911 provides meals to needy families in the neighborhood who would other-wise be unable to have a Thanksgiving dinner. Last year our Council delivered 12 complete turkey dinners to needy families. CONGRATULATIONS

Sister Gemma Brennan, RSM, a former teacher at St. Anastasia for many years, will celebrate her 100th Birth-day on December 1, 2008. Birthday wishes can be sent to Sister Gemma Brennan, RSM, Mercy Center, PO Box 370, Dallas, PA, 18612. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

If anyone you know is interested in joining our Council, have them come to the Annex on any Tuesday evening at 8:00PM or call August Randazzo at 718-279-9096. We will be happy to discuss the benefits of membership.

* * * I'm Past Grand Knight of St. Anastasia Knights of Colum-bus council #5911 in Douglaston and Chairman of Voca-tions for St. Anastasia parish. Now I think we need to light the spark for vocations. Now let me point out that we need to increase vocations to the priesthood for there is a great shortage and it will become more serious as time goes on. We have two very find seminaries on Long Is-land, one in Douglaston and the other in Huntington where our priests finish their studies and turn out most dedicated priests. Here is something to think about and that our priests are the integral part of the Eucharist and without the Eucharist we have no church as well as no Knights of Columbus. The answer in part is praying for vocations but we also need to inspire our youth to con-sider religious life. If we see a young person who lives an upright life and conducts himself in the faith, we should ask him if he ever considered being a priest. This could act as a spark that might light the spark to become a priest. We need to be active in recruiting the best of our youth to consider religious vocations. For remember Mat-thew 9:37-38: "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few. So ask the master of the harvest to send out the laborers for the harvest." Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Autumn Recipes Wanted

We would like to enrich the October 26 issue of our Bulletin by some autumn recipes for anything (main courses, snacks or desserts), namely anything that tastes so good this sea-son, or just utilizes seasonal ingredients. Drop us your favorite recipe at the Rectory, or email us at [email protected] Deadline: Tuesday, October 21. Thank you,
