Bridges need clothing For a number of years now and thanks to the generosity of our parishioners; every Sunday morning during the winter months, we bring hot choco-late, a sandwich and some warm clothes to a group of homeless men living under the bridges and surrounding areas

of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. These are men who for different reasons have given up on life and seen unable to cope with it. As the cold weather approaches, once again we are preparing to start our mission and we need clothing. If you have warm clothes and blan-kets that are clean and in good condition and would like to donate them please call us and we will pick them up. A t each Easter and Christmas, from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, the City

of Rome and the World receive a pa-pal address and blessings. This is not witnessed only by the people gathered in St. Peter's Square but also by the millions watching the Urbi et Orbi on television and listening on radio. In Christmas 1995, Pope John Paul II launched the Vatican's Website, vatican.va. It consisted of one page with the text of his Urbi et Orbi address. Behind the scenes was Judith Zoebelein, a Franciscan Sister from New York. Sister Judith, 59 years-old, is the technical and editorial director of the Internet Office of the Holy See. She grew up in the Hamp-tons and later resided in Manhattan. She studied Irish drama and graduated from Hof-stra University. Sister Judith began her inter-national travels after joining the Peace Corps. She spent two years teaching English in rural Thailand and after returning home, studied to teach English as a second lan-guage. After meeting a group of nuns, the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, Judith found her childhood Catholicism rekindled. She entered the abbey in Meriden, Connecti-cut. "I was looking for something meaning-ful and eternal," she says. Sister Judith loved computers. Her father was a computer professional who worked for Burroughs Corporation. In 1981 the Order sent her to Jerusalem to help train Palestini-ans in the use of computers. In 1986 she was asked to oversee the organi-zation of computer systems for Catholic Re-lief Services, the relief and development arm of the Church here in the United States. She was programming, training and setting up telecommunications services when she came to the attention of Rosario Jose Cardinal Castillo Lara, who was the manager of Vati-can properties and he asked her in 1991 to come work at the Vatican With the outbreak of Internet use in the mid-1990s, Sister Judith recognized the Web's potential and together with a small group of Vatican technologists took the idea of creat-

ing a website to John Paul II, who quickly approved of it. The website vatican.va is available in Eng-lish, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and as of May 2008, Latin. In its first two days in 1995, the site had more than 300,000 visitors and received many emails requesting information, prayers, and sending good wishes to the Pope. ''In the first two weeks we got 4,000 letters,'' Sister Judith said. ''It surprised everybody.'' Uncomfort-able with the system's inability to respond to such E-mail, the Vatican suspended opera-tions at the site for 18 months. The site reap-peared on Easter Sunday 1997, without an E-mail address. The site now gets far more than 15 million hits per day. Visitors come from over 120 different countries including Muslim coun-tries and communist China. So what does Sister Judith cite as her profes-sional challenges and what’s ahead for her

team? It is integrating information technol-ogy with a 2000 year old institution. As of 2006, there were 17 people working on the website and many more were interested in helping the Church's efforts on the Internet. Her hopes for the next 5-10 years are for different groups within the Catholic Church hierarchy to communicate and collaborate better using technology. She sees this being done by creating documents, sharing ideas, and putting together outreach missions within a secure technology environment. With information from:
