Extra point of Back and Waist1. Dingchuan (Calm Dyspnea) or M-
BW-1
LOCATION0.5 to 1 cun lateral to the depression below the spinous process of the seventh
cervical vertebra (Dazhui DU-14).
INDICATIONSAsthma, wheezing, cough, urticaria, pain of the shoulder or upper back, rubella (German Measles), neck rigidity.
NEEDLINGPerpendicular-oblique insertion towards the spine, 0.5 to 1 cun.
Extra point of Head and neck2. Huatuojiaji (Hua Tou’s Paraver-
tebral Points) or M-BW-35
LOCATION0.5 to 1 cun lateral to the depressions below the spinousprocesses of the twelve thoracic and five lumbar vertebrae.INDICATIONS• The points from the first to the fourth thoracic vertebrae treat disorders of the Lung and upper limb.
• The points from the fourth to the seventh thoracic vertebrae treat disorders of the Heart.
• The points from the seventh to the tenth thoracic vertebrae treat disorders of the Liver and Gallbladder.

Extra point of Head and neck2. Huatuojiaji (Hua Tou’s Paraver-
tebral Points) or M-BW-35
NEEDLINGPerpendicular-oblique insertion towards the spine, 0.5 to1 cun.
Note: the intention of needling these points is to stimulate the appropriate spinal nerve. The superficial locationof the point is chosen as 0.5 to 1 cun lateral to the midline according to depth and angle of needle insertion. In some patients a more perpendicular, and in others a more oblique, line of insertion will give easier access to these points.
Extra point of Head and neck3. Weiguanxiashu (Stomach Controller Lower Shu) or M-BW-12
LOCATION1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the eighth thoracic
vertebra (T8).
INDICATIONSWasting and thirsting disorder, dry throat, pain of the chest and lateral costal region, epigastric pain, vomiting.
NEEDLINGOblique insertion towards the spine, 0.5 to 1 cun, or transverse-oblique insertion
1 to 1.5 cun.
Caution: perpendicular needling or oblique needling away from the spine carries a substantial risk of causing apneumothorax.
Extra point of Head and neck4. Shiqizhuixia (Below the Seventeenth
Vertebra) or M-BW-25LOCATIONOn the midline of the lower back, in the
depression below the spinous process of the fifth lumbar vertebra.
INDICATIONSPain of the lumbar region and legs (thigh), difficult urination, paralysis of the lower extremities, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea.
NEEDLING
Perpendicular insertion 0.5 to 1 cun.
Caution:the spinal canal lies between 1.25 and 1.75 cun deep to the skin surface, varying according to body build.
Extra point of Head and neck5. Yaoqi (Lumbar Extra) or M-BW-29
LOCATION2 Cun directly above the tip
of the coccyx
INDICATIONSEpilepsy, headache, insomnia, constipation
NEEDLINGPuncture subcutaneously upward 1-2 Cun.
Extra point of Head and neck6. Pigen (Lump’s Root) or M-BW-16
LOCATION
3.5 Cun lateral to the lower border of the spinousprocess of the first lumbar vertebra (L1)
INDICATIONSHepatosplenomegaly, lumbar pain.
NEEDLINGPuncture perpendicularly 0.5-0.8 Cum
Pigen
Extra point of Head and neck7. Yaoyan (Lumbar eyes) or M-BW-24
LOCATIONIn the depression approximately 3.5 cun
lateral to the lower border of L4(Yaoyangguan DU-3).

NEEDLINGPerpendicular insertion 0.8-1.2 cun.
Extra point of Head and neck8. Huanzhong (Circle’s Middle) or M-BW-34
LOCATIONMidway between GB 30 (Huantiao) and
Du 2 (Yaoshu)
INDICATIONSLumbar pain, thigh pain
NEEDLINGPerpendicularly 1.5-2 Cun
