Anatomy of Industrial Robots
The RIA (Robotics Industries Association) has ofcially given the denition or
Industrial Robots. According to RIA, “ An Industrial Robot is a reprograable,
ultiunctional anipulator designed to ove aterials, parts, tools, or special
devices through variable prograed otions or the perorance o a variety o
tas!s."
The Anatomy o Industrial Robots deals #ith the assebling o outer coponents o
a robot such as #rist, ar, and body. $eore %uping into Robot &ongurations, here
are soe o the !ey acts about robot anatoy.
• End Efectors' A hand o a robot is considered as end eectors. The
grippers and tools are the t#o signicant types o end eectors. The
grippers are used to pic! and place an ob%ect, #hile the tools are used to
carry out operations li!e spray painting, spot #elding, etc. on a #or! piece.
• Robot Joints' The %oints in an industrial robot are helpul to peror sliding
and rotating oveents o a coponent.
• Manipulator ' The anipulators in a robot are developed by the integration
o lin!s and %oints. In the body and ar, it is applied or oving the tools in
the #or! volue. It is also used in the #rist to ad%ust the tools.
• Kinematics' It concerns #ith the assebling o robot lin!s and %oints. It is
also used to illustrate the robot otions.
The Robots are ostly divided into our a%or congurations based on their
appearances, sies, etc. such as'
•&ylindrical &onguration,
• *olar &onguration,
• +ointed Ar &onguration, and
• &artesian &oordinate &onguration.
&ylindrical &onguration'
This !ind o robots incorporates a slide in the horiontal position and a colun in the
vertical position. It also includes a robot ar at the end o the slide. -ere, the slide is

capable o oving in up do#n otion #ith the help o the colun. In addition, it
can reach the #or! space in a rotary oveent as li!e a cylinder.

Advantages'• Increased rigidity, and
• &apacity o carrying high payloads.
5isadvantages'
• 3loor space re6uired is ore, and
• 7ess #or! volue.
*olar &onguration' The polar conguration robots #ill possess an ar, #hich can ove up and do#n. It
coprises o a rotational base along #ith a pivot. It has one linear t#o rotary %oints
that allo#s the robot to operate in a spherical #or! volue. It is also stated as
8pherical &oordinate Robots.
/0aple' 9niate :;;; 8eries Robot.
Advantages'
• 7ong reach capability in the horiontal position.
5isadvantages'
• <ertical reach is lo#.
+ointed Ar &onguration'
The ar in these conguration robots loo!s alost li!e a huan ar. It gets three
rotary %oints and three #rist a0es, #hich or into si0 degrees o reedos. As a
result, it has the capability to be controlled at any ad%ustents in the #or! space. These types o robots are used or peroring several operations li!e spray painting,
spot welding, arc welding, and ore.

Advantages'
• Increased @e0ibility,
• -uge #or! volue, and
• uic! operation.

• 5ifcult operating procedures, and
• *lenty o coponents.
&artesian &oordinate conguration' These robots are also called as XY robots, because it is e6uipped #ith three rotary
%oints or assebling BCD a0es. The robots #ill process in a rectangular #or! space
by eans o this three %oints oveent. It is capable o carrying high payloads #ith
the help o its rigid structure. It is ainly integrated in soe unctions li!e pic! and
place, aterial handling, loading and unloading, and so on. Additionally, this
conguration adds a nae o 1antry Robot.

Advantages'
• -ighly accurate speed,
• 3e#er cost,
• 8iple operating procedures, and
• -igh payloads.
5isadvantages'
• 7ess #or! envelope, and
• Reduced @e0ibility.
