Notes for Mary Kelly:According to the 1900 census, Mary and Isaac along with Mabel lived near their son Edward in Sparta, NJ.The census lists Mary as having had 7 children, with 2 surving. It also shows that Mary immigrated from Irelandin 1853.

The 1800 Census stated she was born in NY, and her parents were born in Ireland. Living with them was aHannah Baxter and her family. Hannah was three years older than Mary, listed as being born in Ireland. Wouldthis possible be a sister to Mary??

After Isaac died, Mary moved to Suffern with Mable, and lived there for 22 years. Mary is buried in the AirmontCemetery, Suffern, NY. With the Shuarts.

Its possible that Mary was an Actress before marrying Isaac.

From Unknown Newspaper, 1924: Mrs. Mary Bennett passed away in her 73rd year afte an illness of thirteen weeks.; She was a resident of Sufferntwenty-two years. She is survived by a son, Edward B. Bennett, of Waldwick, NJ, and a daughter, Mrs. A. H.Shuart of Suffern. Funeral sevices were held at the Methodist Church on Sunday at three o'clock.

Family book from 1990 lists him as being born in Aug. Matche was born Nov 4 1784, possibly his twin. BelieveAug was a typo.Spelling of Bennett was Bennit for some members of the family in the family bible. All Children's birthdates, along with John and Mary's are listed according to the family Bible.

Update Jan 2006: Verified it was a typo in the family book. The bible lists John's actual birthday as 4 Nov 1784,same day as Matche.

1850 Jamaica Queens Census:John J Bennett 67 Farmer New YorkMary 68 New YorkRuth 30Living next to son Isaac and Daughter Sarah Ann Cenus was dated 11 Sep 1850. John died 16 days later.

Tombstone:John I. Bennett died Sep. 21, 1850. Age 65 years, 8 months and 17 days.(Deathdates off by 6 days. Will verify the Bible date. Possibly a mistransciption on the tombstone date.)

From Revolustionary Incidents in Jamaica Queens: Jamaica, being somewhat central, was usually the headquarters of the British commandantsof Long Island, Gen. Oliver Delancey, Tryon and others. The street was patrolled day and night, so that stragglers, deserters and runaway negroes were liable to bearrested and brought before thecommandant for examination. Persons traveling without passes were liable to be arrested by the British patrols. Hence when an officerimpressed a farmer to go on any errand or business for him he gave him a pass. The following is a sample:"JAMAICA, 29th Aug. 1776."Permit Isaac Bennet to pass and repass withoutmolestation:WILL. ERSKINE, Brig. Gen."

Notes for Douwe Ditmars:From HISTORY OF QUEENS COUNTY; New York: W.W. Munsell & Co.; 1882 When the American army abandoned Long Island to the enemy the more active Whigs fled. Rev. Messrs.Keteltas and Froeligh crossed to the main, as did John I. Skidmore, Increase Carpenter, Joseph Robinson,Nehemiah Carpenter sen. and others. The property of those who fled was seized by the British authorities. Butmost of the Whigs staid at home with their families, and took their chance. The more obnoxious were arrested andtaken to the British camp in Kings county. Among these were Elias Bayles, an aged and blind man, an elder in thePresbyterian church; David Lamberson, Abm. Ditmars, Robert Hinchman, John Thurston and others. The more quiet Whigs were not disturbed. They took the oath of allegiance to the crown, signed a paper ofsubmission, and prayed to be restored to the royal favor, and wore a red ribbon on their hats.

Notes for Joris Rapalje:Immigrated 1624 aboard the Unity, occupation Tavern Keeper (Tap House on Pearl Street)

Joris Jansen Rapalje*; b. Apr. 28, 1604 in Valenciennes. a town in Northern France, long considered aProtestant stronghold in the province of Hainaut, but was conquered by Spain in the 1500s. Then, in 1677, underLouis XIV, Valenciennes was recaptured for France. Joris was born there during the time of Spanish occupationand his family was surely under duress. A microfilmed copy of these records, now available, shows by the handwriting that the same priest recordedthe baptism of Nicolas in 1598 and of his brother Georges (Joris) in 1604. He called only the latter illegitimate, ashe did two per cent of the babies he baptized. See on-line The Ancestors of Maria Vanderveer, and select the 8thgeneration page and scroll down to the item #138 on "Joris Janszen Rapelje" [sic]. There is a list of quotes froman article by Hugh T. Law: Chapter 7, Ancestors Traced to France: Joris Jansen De Rapalje and Catharine Trico,"How To Trace Your Ancestors to Europe, 1987, pp.84~86". Thus, this indicates that his genetic mother was notElizabeth Baudoin c1560-1606.. Joris was the youngest child of Jean Rapareilliet*, probably born to a woman other than Jean's wife,Elizabeth Baudoin, but possibly adopted by her. Joris did not know his father, since his father, Jean, died when hewas less than 2 years old. He also would not have known Elizabeth, since she also died in 1606. It is not known ifhe ever knew his genetic mother, but it seems possible that his father would have employed the services of somewoman, perhaps a mistress, perhaps Joris' genetic mother, to raise his family. Jean was born about 1552 inValenciennes, Nord, France. Jean died after 1602. One source says buried on 23 Feb 1606 in Valenciennes,France. In about 1599, Jean married Elizabeth Baudoin, and she birthed 8 and raised 9 of the following childrenuntil she died in 1606:Jehenne Rapareilliet (c. Aug 1578-___?)Marie Rapareilliet (c. Jul 1580-___?)Jeanne Rapareilliet (c. Dec 1590-___?)Olivier Rapareilliet (c. Feb 1594-___?)Anne Rapareilliet(c. Sep 1595-___?)Francois Rapareilliet (c. Nov 1596-___?)Nicholaes Rapareilliet (c. Jul 1598-___?)Jean Rapareilliet, Jr. (1600-1600), died in infancy.Joris Janszen Rapareilliet* (1604-1662), indicated as "illegitimate". Joris' surname, Rapalje, was a vulgar "Dutchification" of the French or Walloon name "Rapareillet". Thevariations of the spelling of his surname suggests that, although born in the Spanish occupied Hainaut Province ofFrance, he may have spent some time in Walloonia, Flanders, now a part of Belgium. Once in America at NewAmsterdam, he was said to have come from La Rochelle, France, indicating that he may have lived there as well,or at least had some trade in La Rochelle (possibly through Catalyntie's father). His middle name, Jansen, suggests that he was the son of Jan (in Dutch), or Jean (in French).

Baptismal entry in the Roman Catholic church of St. Nicholas in Valenciennes (then in Hainault, now in theDepartment of Nord, France). This record was first published by the late George E. McCracken in his articletitled "Joris Janszen Rapelje of Valenciennes and Catelyntje Trico of Pry", published in volume 48 (1972) ofTAG [The American Genealogist], pages 118-120. The record was discovered in 1960 by M.P. de Saint-Aubin,then Archiviste of the Department of Nord, France. The baptismal record reads:"28 Avril 1604, Georges Rapareilliet, illegitimus fils de Jean Rapareillet, susceptor [godfather] Noe Vasseur, susceptrix [godmother] Jehenne de latre."

From them Jacques Bentyn and Willem Adriaense Bennett bought, in 1636, atract of 930 acres at Gowanus, extending from twenty-seventh Street to New Utrecht. Notes for Catalyntje Trico:From RAPELJE HISTORY by Steve Wicks on Newsday.com, 2007:The first group in the Netherlands to venture to the New World were the passengers aboard theUnity. They included a Dutchman named Joris Jansen de Rapelje, the 19-year-old son of arenowned painter named Abraham, and Joris' wife, Catalyntje, 18, who was French. They marriedon Jan. 21, 1624, and four days later embarked on the long voyage across the ocean. On boardwere about a dozen families, plus 30 unaccompanied men.The Unity arrived at the foot of theHudson River, next to the wooded, rocky island, and slowly tacked north. More than 130 miles upthe river, the Unity -- or perhaps a smaller ship they had transferred to -- dropped anchor at the siteof Ft. Orange, near present-day Albany. The fort was little more than a log settlement offeringminimal protection from the weather and the Indians. There, in a dirt-floored room inside thestockaded fort, Sarah de Rapelje was born on June 9, 1625. That year, the only other Europeansalong the East Coast were English settlers in Virginia and at the Plymouth Colony inMassachusetts.WAS SARAH the first European baby born in what is now New York State? Yes,according to the Dutch records. Specifically, Volume III of the 19th Century DocumentaryHistory of New York, which states that her mother was the "first white woman" to live in what istoday Albany. When Sarah's mother was older and living on Long Island, one document referredto her as "the mother of New York.""The Rapelje baby is regarded as the first," said CharlesGehring, director of the Albany-based New Netherland Project, a private effort to document NewYork's Dutch history.

From Gerry Clements:Catalyntje Tricos' parents were Jerononius(Joris), born 1554/83, France who married 1604,in France to MicheleSauvagie, born 1585, Paris, Seine, France.

161. Aeitje Wessels, born 1600 in Holland; died 1643 in Holland.

Notes for Steven Van Vorhees:'The Van Voorhees Family, Vol 1', 1984 Steven Koerts was the ancestor of the Van Voorhees family in the New World, regardless of later variationsin spelling. Even he sometimes signed his name Steven Koerten. Steven Coerten has often been used ingenealogical writings; today he is by tradition referred to as Steven Coerte. Aged sixty at the time of arrival in Nieuw Amsterdam, he was born near Hees in the Province of Drenthe in1600. Having arrived in Nieuw Amsterdam, Steven Koerts took time to look around and apparently had the meansto do so and to maintain his family in the interim. It was not until November 29, 1660, seven months after hisarrival, that he purchased from Cornelis Dircksen Hoogland nine morgens of corn land, seven morgens of woodland, ten morgens of plain land and five morgens of salt meadow in Flatlands, with the house and house plot inthe village of Amersfoort en Bergen (Flatlands) with a brewery, brewing apparatus, kettle house and casks withappurtenances for three thousand guilders (Flatbush Records, Lib. B. p. 37). (A morgen is about two acres ofland.) Since he acquired all the equipment it is assumed that he followed the brewing business. That he entered intothe religious and civic affairs of his community is without question. He was appointed a magistrate in 1664 andon March 19, 1664 with Elbert Elbertse (Stoothoff), represented Nieuw Amersfoort in the Provincial Assembly.(Brodhead's History of New York, p. 67). In October 1667 Steven Coertes with others, patented the town ofFlatlands. Unfortunately, the Flatlands Reformed Church has few early records, but Steven Coert and his wife arelisted as members of the Church in 1677. In 1673 the Flatlands Town Records were destroyed by fire, wiping outmuch evidence of land transfers. Steven Coerte apparently acquired several tracts around Flatlands; they passed tohis descendants when he died at Flatlands on February 16, 1684 at the ripe age of 84.

Holland Society Year Book, 1902, p. 13:Captain Pieter Lucasz sailed his little ship "De Bonte Koe" (the Spotted Cow) between Holland and NieuwAmsterdam regularly, but the arrival on April 15, 1660 is of special interest, as among the passengers were:"Steven Koorts From Drenthe, wife and seven children aged 22, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. Jan Kiers, farmer and wife fromDrenthe."

Notes for Willemptje Seubring:Immigrated Aboard the "Bonte Koe" , arrival 15 Apr 1660

Notes for Steven Van Vorhees:'The Van Voorhees Family, Vol 1', 1984 Steven Koerts was the ancestor of the Van Voorhees family in the New World, regardless of latervariations in spelling. Even he sometimes signed his name Steven Koerten. Steven Coerten has oftenbeen used in genealogical writings; today he is by tradition referred to as Steven Coerte. Aged sixty at the time of arrival in Nieuw Amsterdam, he was born near Hees in the Province ofDrenthe in 1600. Having arrived in Nieuw Amsterdam, Steven Koerts took time to look around and apparently hadthe means to do so and to maintain his family in the interim. It was not until November 29, 1660, sevenmonths after his arrival, that he purchased from Cornelis Dircksen Hoogland nine morgens of corn land, seven morgens of wood land, ten morgens of plain land and five morgens of salt meadow in Flatlands, with the house and house plot in the village of Amersfoort en Bergen (Flatlands) with a brewery, brewing apparatus, kettle house and casks with appurtenances for three thousand guilders (FlatbushRecords, Lib. B. p. 37). (A morgen is about two acres of land.) Since he acquired all the equipment it is assumed that he followed the brewing business. That heentered into the religious and civic affairs of his community is without question. He was appointed amagistrate in 1664 and on March 19, 1664 with Elbert Elbertse (Stoothoff), represented NieuwAmersfoort in the Provincial Assembly. (Brodhead's History of New York, p. 67). In October 1667Steven Coertes with others, patented the town of Flatlands. Unfortunately, the Flatlands Reformed Church has few early records, but Steven Coert and his wifeare listed as members of the Church in 1677. In 1673 the Flatlands Town Records were destroyed by fire, wiping out much evidence of land transfers. Steven Coerte apparently acquired several tracts aroundFlatlands; they passed to his descendants when he died at Flatlands on February 16, 1684 at the ripe ageof 84.

Holland Society Year Book, 1902, p. 13:Captain Pieter Lucasz sailed his little ship "De Bonte Koe" (the Spotted Cow) between Holland andNieuw Amsterdam regularly, but the arrival on April 15, 1660 is of special interest, as among thepassengers were: "Steven Koorts From Drenthe, wife and seven children aged 22, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. JanKiers, farmer and wife from Drenthe."

Steven with his firstwife, Aeitje Wessels, is Ronald Bennett's direct ancestor through his Father's Bennettside. Steven with his second wife, Willemptje Seubring, is Ronald Bennett's direct ancester through hisMother's Banta side.
