Greetings Friends, Neighbours and Fellow Cattlemen,It’s been a long hard road, for those of us who love these cattle so much we decided to “ride out the storm”, but it certainly does look like the sun is fi nally shining (even though God might have forgotten to light the pilot light this past February – man it was cold!) Prices are fi nally where they need to be to keep the bankers happy – and from anything I’ve ever learned about supply and demand it looks like they should be here for several years to come. And it was with that philosophy in mind that we chose a breeding program aimed very heavily at raising bulls that folks could use, with complete confi dence as they rebuild their herds, on their replacement heifers and second calvers. We still have many tremendous “cow bulls” on offer (we love those Angus cross cows as much as we love a good Angus burger) but we know, from past sales, that our primary market is the lower birth weight bulls.Also, this year, we are extremely excited and proud to introduce our fi rst ever Black Angus bulls – and they are truly outstanding. These guys were purchased “in dam” from three of the most successful Angus herds in Canada: Hamilton Farms, Stewart Cattle Co (Manitoba) and Geis Angus.As always, since we began our purebred herd, these bulls are selected from dams that are culled hard for disposition, udder quality, feet, longevity, fertility, eye appeal and performance – every one of these fellows will carry those same strong maternal traits. It’s defi nitely herd rebuilding time, here in Canada, and these guys have the genetics you want to add to your cow herd.As you go through our catalogue this year you will notice that the performance numbers are off a bit from past years and though we don’t want to offer excuses we believe we do need to explain the reasons for that (and you may need to grab a tissue for this – I know I do). Last year was an absolute monsoon disaster for us and cows in several of our pastures were standing in water most of the summer – and grass that grows in water just does not have the quality of grass grown under dryer conditions. Also, due to the rain, most of our haying was done in late August and early September, silaging in mid-September, harvest after that and salvage of our hailed out crops (which were most of what we did get seeded) after that. As a result we did not get the calves off of the cows until almost November and our wean weights suffered as a result of all of that. And if that wasn’t enough, the fan went through the radiator on our front wheel assist feed tractor, the parts had to come from England (or was it Mars?), and with the 6 feet of snow we got in November and December we simply could not pull the wagon with a 2 wheel drive tractor (I’m actually starting to feel a country song coming on here). As a result the bulls didn’t get any grain until about mid-December – which was destiny anyway as most of our intended barley land could have only been seeded last year with rice equipment (and the closest custom operator was in China), and the oats and barley we did get seeded was completely lost to a devastating August hail storm. Factor into that the fact that the forage we did harvest last year was probably low energy as well, from all the rain, and it is unbelievable that the bulls still look as good as they do – especially considering this happened on one of the coldest winters in the history of mankind! (“Why me Lord? What have I ever done?”) So please visit our website at anchor1angus.com to view the videos so you can see exactly what I mean.So what you do see this year is exactly what you get – no extra fat to cover anything up. And quite honestly, I’ve never seen our replacements cycle so much so early, nor the activity in the bull pen, so everything they need for breeding is there in spades, the genetics are still there (and anyone who has bought bulls here before knows there is little to no meltdown on our bulls and they look as good coming off the pasture as they did when you took them home and even better when they’re two year olds – and that’s hard to fi nd these days). These bulls would honestly be 100 to 150 pounds heavier, under normal conditions, on this farm, fed the way we do, and 200 to 300 pounds heavier fed like most other breeders would. But they would still be the same bull and sire the same calf crop!So this year, more than ever, we are counting on our customers to trust our commitment to producing the same “quality bulls” as we have in the past – they just didn’t get fed quite as good.Good luck calving this season and look forward to seeing you all sale day.The Geingers.
