The long awaited Spring Reunion is finally here. If you have not been to a recent Reunion, I encourage you to do so. The Cathedral is looking better than it has for years and the sound system has improved dramatically. If you are not involved in the production of these degrees, please make an effort to support those who are. Come and fill those seats on the sidelines.

We are working on renewing the presentation of the degrees which we haven’t seen in the past few Reunions. If there are any individuals, Lodges or Clubs who would like to pursue the task of exemplifying one of these de-grees, contact me or call the Scottish Rite office.

Many thanks to Brother Roderic L. Wagoner, Jr., 32º, for his many hours of work in digitizing our degrees. This opens up more opportunities for us in pursuing our endeavors.

Dates for the Reunion are May 3 and 4, 2013.

Thanks for listening and we look forward to seeing you at the Scottish Rite.

Personal Rep’s Message

Illustrious Brother J. Michael Atchley, 33°, G.·.C.·.

In the Valley of Tucson we have two Reunions a year, when hundreds of Brothers put in countless hours before, during and after, so new Brothers can have a meaningful Masonic experience. They do this knowing they have volunteered their best and have a few months to rest before starting all over again. What kind of impact would there be if we had a room full of candidates and the side lines overflowing with Brothers enjoying the presenta-tions? Any Brother who truly seeks Light will find something new every time he observes a degree being conferred. I don’t believe we can pay them any greater wages than to be there for them. Let’s hope we can continue with everyone doing their part to keep our Valley growing.

Remember, it takes two—one to replace ourselves and one to grow on! We can make this happen, if we try.

The only sources of income we have to maintain and upgrade our beautiful Cathedral are the Special Events, Dues, Fundraisers and Donations. (The Cathedral Foundation is a 501(C)(3), which means any donation you make can be used as a tax deduction—a real winner for both). The last several years have been really hard for our Valley. Broken water pipes were replaced, installed two new air conditioners in the Red Room, upgraded the electrical wiring on the roof, replaced approximately 35 fire extinguishers throughout the build-ing and installed a new sound system in the Red Room. All of this has left us pretty thin financially. We still have 152 Brothers who do not have a 2013 dues card in their wallet. Please check and make sure you have a current dues card. The dues for 2013 were due on January 1, 2013.

This summer we will continue with the potluck dinners. Mark June 27th, July 25th and August 22nd on your cal-endars and plan to join us at the Cathedral for an ole fashion good time!

At the March Stated Meeting, no one found the eight of hearts, so the 50-50 raffle has grown to $3,790.00. Will you be the lucky winner? Come to Stated Meeting on April 25th and purchase your tickets.

M any thanks for all the hard work the various depart-ments have been doing the last few years. Your hard

work is paying off with an increased number of new members joining us, fewer dropping out and a new energy being felt throughout the organization. The increased revenue from the parking lots and donations from our members has meant that many items of deferred maintenance have been performed. The efforts of the Atchleys, Knights of St. Andrew and the Tuesday Crew along with many others are now really becoming visible. Some of the early work was invisible, such as hiring contractors to: replace all the fire extinguishers throughout the building; in-stall a new main gas line, replace broken water pipes and mak-ing repairs to the chiller system, which within the next couple of years, will need to be replaced. All of these projects cost tens of thousands of dollars. By the way, the “deposit” win-dow is always open at the Scottish Rite if you have a few extra dollars for the general fund. A new version of the Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal was performed at the March Stated Meeting which was well received. Thanks to KSA and Illustrious J. Michael Atchley, 33º, G.·.C.·. for a fine performance. The upcoming Feast of Tishri will also be a new version never seen here in Tucson. Bro.·. James E. Wolfe, 32º, K.·.C.·.C.·.H.·., Director of the Work is working on presenting some of the degrees which haven’t been seen in recent memory and looking at ways to enhance the performances. There are a few Lodges that will take a degree as a project and there are several degrees with a small cast which would lend themselves to doing this. If you have a few ritualists looking for a new challenge, or if you would like to help out, contact Brother

him a note at: [email protected]. This summer we will continue our “non-meetings” on the 4th Thursdays in June, July and August with a casual gather-ing for fellowship and fun without ‘that darn meeting’. Looking forward to seeing you soon at the Rite.

J ust weeks ago, the Tucson Valley of the Scottish Rite celebrated the annual Ceremony of Remembrance and

Renewal. A new version of that Ceremony was most success-ful and poignant. Perhaps I was primed to be emotionally affected by those proceedings because of the recent deaths of two family members; my brother-in-law Rick Knauer and my uncle Bob Clark...but I was struck by what seemed to me to be the many, many Brothers who had passed to the Celestial Lodge in the preceding year. These Brothers will be mourned and most especially, missed. We can ill-afford to lose members, let alone treasured and long-time Brothers such as these. As Senior Warden of my Lodge, I recently had an occasion to write a piece for our Tresselboard which had to do with the Masonic Funeral Service we conducted for a long-time Brother who had not attended Lodge for many years. His family had requested the Service and were well pleased, but I was moved to ask of the other Lodge Brothers, “were you there?” As Freemasons, we take oaths and make many promises. One of the most important is to demonstrate the “Friendship and Brotherly Love of the Lodge”. Perhaps the most meaning-ful way we can do that is to stand with our Brothers right to the edge of Eternity—to the edge of the grave. So I asked, “were you there?” We are Brothers all and should demon-strate that, live it and be there to support each other—at a funeral, at Lodge, in life...and yes, in death. Someone once said that 90% of success in life is just showing up. That could apply to Freemasonry as well. The bright spot in this scenario is the class of new Masters of the Royal Secret from the May Reunion. They are eager to learn what we have to teach, and here, my Brothers, is our job defined. We must take them, not only into the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, but into our hearts as well. We must mentor them, nurture their desire to learn and not let them founder on the cold shores of neglect. Hopefully they will go on to long service at the Rite and perhaps, many decades from now, their names will be read aloud, their passage mourned at a distant future Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal. The Scottish Rite Spring Reunion is not that far away. Will you be there? There is much you can do and I would argue that one of the most important things to do is to show new Candidates as well as all Scottish Rite Brothers that you stand with them, support them, that you are there for them...as a sideliner too. We’d all like to see a “packed house” at Reunion time. Will you be there? May it be so!

Do You Just Belong?

Are you an active member the kind that would be missed,

or are you just contented that your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the flock,

or do you stay at home and criticize and knock?

Do you take an active part

to help the work along, or are you satisfied to be

the kind that “JUST BELONG”?

Do you ever go and visit a member who is sick,

or leave the work to a few and talk about the clique?

Think this over, member,

you know right from wrong, are you an active member

Sign up now and become a part of the Scottish Rite Degree Team. The Degree Team will travel to Lodges within Southern Arizona, when invited, to exemplify the Master Mason Degree in full costume. The only requirement for membership is that you be a member of Scottish Rite—Valley of Tucson. Rumor has it that you must have gray hair to be a member of our team. However, upon investigation of this rumor, I can tell you the rumor is completely false. So, dye your hair and join us. Please call Illustrious Brother Craig L.
