What is the difference between ANCIENT and

MODERN? Can you think of a definition for each?

    NEXTBACK

We’re going to be learning about the

    ancient Egyptian civilisation!

ANCIENT MODERNAncient history refers to things that happened a long time in the past.

Ancient history is generally everything up until the year 500 AD.

Modern history refers to everything that has

happened in more recent times, since the year

    500 in the Middle Ages.

Can you think of some other ancient and modern civilisations?

BC means ‘before Christ’. Anything that happened before the year AD 1 is BC.

    BC AD

AD is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase: anno Domini which means ‘in the year of the Lord’. Unless there could be some confusion, we usually leave out the AD when saying the year.

Sometimes people use BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) instead of referencing Christianity.

    1 BC AD

    1 BC AD

Can you place these years on the timeline?

Think carefully about the position of the BC dates.

Did you know that there is no

AD 0 or 0 BC? When 1 BC ended it went

    straight into AD 1.

AD AD 3 BC 6 BC

    1 BC AD

The AD dates count up; smaller numbered dates happened earlier than larger numbered dates.

    AD AD 3 BC6 BC

The BC dates count down; larger numbered dates happened earlier than smaller numbered dates.

So that means that the year 60 BC happened after the year 70 BC.

Can you find ancient Egypt on this timeline?

The ancient Egyptian civilisation covers a long period in history. It is generally defined by the time when

the Pharaohs ruled Egypt. This started around 3100 BC but no one can really agree when it ended. Some people believe it finished

around 320 BC when Alexander the Great invaded Egypt, but others

think it ended around 30 BC when the Romans invaded.

The one thing historians do agree on is that the ancient Egyptians had a long and fascinating history.
