Qatari innovation adds to Arab musical instrument

LLEWELLYN FLORESDOHA

A MUSICAL instrument that has endured for centuries, the oud has travelled the globe from Southern Meso--potamia (modern Iraq and

parts of Iran ), where it’s believed to have originated thousands of years ago, spawning regional variations, begetting the lute and grand-siring the guitar.

The word oud, or ‘ūd, in Arabic means twig or a piece of wood, which is what is used in making the back of the instrument. Made commonly from maple, rosewood, mahogany, walnut or a mix of them, the instrument gets its colour from the natural pigment of the wood used.

Considered the main instrument in Arab music, especially its classical form, the oud has been lending its rich and sonorous sound to the region’s musi--cal compositions for over five hundred years. With a pear-shaped body, short neck and angled peg box, the instru--ment commonly has 11 strings, ten of them tuned in pairs. It has no frets and is played by plucking its strings with a plectrum.

According to Issa Boulos, a Palestin--ian-American oud player, composer, teacher and the current head of Arab music at the Qatar Music Academy, “there is no classical Arab musical pres--entation that doesn’t have an oud.”

Primarily trained in the piano, Issa gradually moved to the oud so that he can “play the music he grew up with and loves.” Having grown up in a household

where musical instruments were as common as regular furniture, the 41 year old has now been playing the oud for 30 years.

“There are certain things the oud can do, musically speaking, that you cannot do on a piano,” he said explaining fur--ther that Arab music (as well as Middle Eastern, Persian, all the way to central Asia and Asia minor) is governed by the maqam, a system of melodic modes that define the pitches, patterns and develop--ment of a piece of music.

The Arabic scales, which maqamat are built from, are not even-tempered, unlike the chromatic scale used in West--ern classical music. Many maqamat include notes that can be approximated with quarter tones depicted using the half-flat sign or the half-sharp sign.

“The maqamat that are in use are over 60 so we have plenty of different possibilities when we make music,” he said. “The piano just couldn’t cope with what we do.”

The standard size of the oud though, limits the people who can play it. But Qatar Music Academy (QMA) addressed this concern by commissioning oud makers to make different sizes of the instrument. “Instrument making has always throughout history been tailored to the size of the person,” Issa said. “So although the sizes of the ouds differ, the proportions are the same.

“Now we have a quarter of an oud, a third of an oud, half an oud, two thirds of an oud, three fourths of an oud and a full oud allowing kids as young as eight years old to play the instrument.”

In addition, QMA has also developed its own curriculum for the study of the maqam. “We notate all the pieces,” Issa said. “It’s not only repertoire but also drills, all in the maqam genre.”

QMA also conducts workshops for schools where they introduce and expose students to musical instruments through discussions, playing the instruments and slide shows. “Our target is supposed to be like six workshops per year,” said Issa. “But the demand that we receive is way more than that and what we deliver is way more than that.

“We also go beyond and collaborate with different schools to help music teachers incorporate lessons about Arab music. So we give them materials, we give them recordings, we give them sheet music, we give them transliterations so it’s a very diverse sort of environment.”

Though imperceptible through regular media like the TV, radio, print

etc, Issa said there are more oud players and more instrumental pieces written for the oud today than ever in history. He at--tributes the growth to the ‘boom’ in Arab music that began in the 1930s when Arab countries started establishing conserva--tories and to the impetus towards writ--ing original music in the second half of the 20th century.

“You will find lots of musicians from

everywhere in the Arab world, who really make music anywhere they are,” Issa said. “I have to give them credit because they survive despite the fact that there isn’t much public funding, despite the fact that there isn’t much to help them go beyond and make a living from it.

“There is quite a bit of instrumental music written for the oud,” he added.

“Extended technique has been ex--

plored so you find repertoire where the ouds are playing highly sophisticated pieces.”

A decade and more of craftsmanship

SOMEONE looking for Alaa Fuad Jihad is more likely to find the Iraqi oud maker at the back of his shop at the handicraft section of Souq Waqif.

Do not be mistaken by just a few ouds made of different types of wood on display at his shop for he makes them only by order - a single piece tak--ing at least a month to finish.

A luthier for over 13 years, Jihad who has been practicing his craft in Qatar for about nine, claims that Iraqi-made ouds are the best in terms of design and sound.

Issa Boulos, head of Arab music at Qatar Music Academy who bought one of the ouds made by Jihad’s father back in 1995, would seem to agree. “The Iraqis have at least a hundred years of a legacy of being really good oud makers and good oud musicians,” he says.

As can be expected in case of such premium pieces, the ouds made in Jihad’s shop do not come cheap. They are priced in the range of QR4,000 to QR6,000 apiece.

THE suspense thriller The Purge topped the weekend box office with a shocking $36.4 million that doubled industry expectations, ac--

cording to studio estimates.Audiences starved for a horror option

flocked to the micro-budget Universal film starring Ethan Hawke. The film’s strong opening performance minted another box-office hit for Paranormal Activity producer Jason Blum.

Like that horror franchise, The Purge was made for relative peanuts - just $3 million - making it an extremely lucra--tive release for Universal. The studio had expected it to open in the high teens.

“Never did we expect it to open at this level,” said Nikki Rocco, head of distri--bution for Universal. “This result could not have been forecasted by anybody.”

There has been a dearth of horror films at the multiplex in recent weeks, which Rocco acknowledged was a major factor for The Purge. Written and direct--ed by James DeMonaco, The Purge is set in a utopic United States in the year 2022, where crime has been eradicated except for one violently cathartic day a year when nearly all mayhem is legal.

The film opened strong with late night screenings on Thursday night that alone took in $3.4 million.

“This is exactly the kind of film that stumps all the analysts,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-of--fice tracker Hollywood.com. “It proves

that R-rated horror films, no matter the budget, always have a place with audi--ences.”

Universal also claimed the second spot at the box office, as the Vin Diesel action flick Fast & Furious 6 earned $19.8 million in its third week of release. The sixth installment of the street racing series has now earned a total of $202.3 million domestically and $381.7 million internationally.

The Google-promoting comedy The Internship opened with $18.1 million, a decent debut for the Fox comedy that reteams Wedding Crashers stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.

But that was good enough only for fourth place behind two hold-overs: Fast

& Furious 6 and Lionsgate’s Now You See Me. The illusionist heist film held strong, earning $19.5 million over the weekend, bring--ing its cumulative haul to $61.4 million.

After Will Smith’s sci-fi ad--venture After Earth bombed in its domestic opening last week--end, coming in third with $27.5 million for Sony, the film found a warmer reception overseas this weekend. It took in $45.5 million internationally after opening in some 60 over--seas markets. Domestically, it continued to fare poorly, adding $11.2 million in its

second week.Even with the unexpected success of

The Purge, the box office was still down from last year, when Madagascar 3 and Prometheus both opened. But Superman comes to the rescue next weekend with the debut of Zac Snyder’s highly an--ticipated Man of Steel for Warner Bros. Dergarabedian expects the film to open above $100 million.

A WOMAN who threw eggs at inter--national talent show guru Simon Cowell during the finals of the

popular television contest Britain’s Got Talent will not face charges, show organ--izers said recently.

Cowell was one of four judges watch--ing two brothers singing during the live televised performance on Saturday night when a viola player ran from the back of the stage and threw several eggs at him before being removed by security staff.

Cowell removed his jacket and the show continued.

The woman was later named as Natalie Holt, 30, a member of the brothers’ backing group, who had competed in the same tal--ent show last year with her string ensemble Raven Quartet, without much success.

“As a result of her misguided actions, the police were called. However, we have decided to take no further action at this stage,” said a spokeswoman for the show.

In the statement, released by the show’s organisers, Holt apologised to the brothers, Richard and Adam, for overshadowing their performance, saying she realised that “it was a silly thing to do”.

But she was less contrite in comments to the Telegraph website, saying: “I basically

took a stand against people miming on televi--sion and against Simon and his dreadful influence on the music industry.”

Cowell is the mastermind behind global TV franchises such as The X Factor and Got Talent that are often accused of creating overnight stars without real talent, and of fuelling a culture of celebrity.

Cowell has become a household name in his native Britain through appearing as the acerbic judge on several of his shows.

The seventh series of Britain’s Got Tal--ent was won by a Hungarian shadow danc--ing group called Attraction, who took home 250,000 pounds ($380,000) and will per--form for Queen Elizabeth.

“Thanks for coming out. World War Z is big and it’s bold. You’ve never seen anything like it.

It’s the most intense thing you’ll see all summer. If not, we’ll give you your money back. Let’s get this party started,” Pitt added.

Two longtime producers leave American Idol ADD two more departures to the American Idol post-season tally.

Fox said on Sunday that longtime executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick are exit--ing the singing contest. Its 12th season ended in May with a record low-rated finale.

The producers follow judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson out the door.

Fox confirmed the producers’ departure after Lythgoe said online that he’d been “fired” from the show.

“It’s not a personal thing,” he said in a posting on his Twitter account. “They just feel Idol needs new leadership after 12 Seasons.” Jackson was an original panellist. Minaj and Carey joined this sea--son, and their on-air bickering proved uncomfortable for viewers and contestants. The fate of Keith Urban, the other newcomer, is uncertain, and Fox didn’t announce who would replace the pro--ducers.

In a statement, Fox and the companies behind American Idol thanked Lythgoe and Warwick for their work and said they looked forward to working with them on other projects. Lythgoe is the producer and a judge for Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance. The network “still loves me,” he tweeted.

Taylor Swift would like to play detective on TV showSINGER Taylor Swift is a sucker for detective shows on the small screen and says she would like to try playing a detective some day.

The singer’s career is certainly not going down but she’s got a back-up lined up.

“I’d be an interior de--signer or a detective, but I don’t think I’d be a good detective. I just watch all of those crime shows. Anything that has a slight premise of being a crime show, I’m on it, “ thesun.co.uk quoted the I Knew You Were Trouble star as saying.

“I have so many boxsets. I’m into Criminal Minds at the moment, and Law And Order, and CSI. I’ve never seen The Wire, but I’ll get into that next,” added the 23-year-old who is currently on a tour.

HOBBITS, elves and dragons ap--pear to be luring tourists to New Zealand as fans await their first

glimpse of the second movie in The Hob--bit trilogy.

Figures released this month by gov--ernment agency Tourism New Zealand show that international vacations to the South Pacific nation rose 10 percent from January through April when compared to the same period last year. The agency said a survey indicated that 8.5 percent of visitors cited The Hobbit as one reason for coming and that 13 percent took part in some kind of hobbit-themed tourism, like visiting a film set.

Warner Bros. announced recently that it will release the first teaser-trailer of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at 1 pm EDT Tuesday. The second film will premiere on December 13 in Los Angeles.

The trilogy is directed by New Zea--land filmmaker Peter Jackson and shot in his home country. The opener The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was released in December 2012. It received mixed reviews but proved extraordinarily popular with audiences, earning a little over $1 billion at the box office.

In an email, Jackson’s spokesman Matt Dravitzki said fans can expect “a surprise or two” in this week’s trailer,

“but I can’t say anything more than that!”A little over 500,000 tourists visited

New Zealand for vacations in the first four months of the year. About the same number again visited for other reasons, such as for work or to visit relatives.

Tourism New Zealand has been running a “100 percent Middle-earth” marketing campaign that seeks leverage from the movies.

The Hobbit is based on JRR Tolkien’s novel of the same name and traces the adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he attempts to help a group of dwarves regain their wealth and stature from the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit is the prequel to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

SINGER-SONGWRITER Demi Lovato has praised singers Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas for supporting her

during her rehab stint. The 20-year-old checked into a treat--

ment facility to overcome her struggles with bulimia and self-harming in 2010. She has thanked her family and friends for helping her get through her darkest days, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

She said: “I ended up having to go through some stuff. Fortunately, I have family and friends around me who are very, very supportive of me and my re--covery and everything I stand for.”

“Nick especially. He’s always been there for me. And Selena because she called me crying when I was in there and was just so worried. I was like, ‘Look, I should be the one crying, it’s all good!’ But she was so worried and ever since then we’ve gotten closer,” she added.

She also said she is feeling good about herself and insists she is doing much better now.

She said: “I have more confidence than I did a couple years ago. And to me, confidence is sexy.”

The singer had previously claimed that rehab showed her who her real friends were.

She said: “A couple of months before

I went to rehab, I had a birthday party, and there were a couple of hundred people there. It was full of people who I considered my closest friends.”

“When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I ex--pected lots of text messages and phone calls. I had four texts. That was a wake-up call,” she added.

Lovato has cut most of her old friends out of her life.

She said: “I don’t have loads of friends. Like I used to, but then I realised, do any of them actually care?”

ALTHOUGH his first produc--tion venture, Marathi film Balak Palak, highlighted the importance of sex edu--cation among adolescents,

actor-producer Riteish Deshmukh says it is not compulsory that all films should convey a message.

His banner Mumbai Film Company is now working on another Marathi film titled Lai Bhaari - meaning mind-blow--ing - and Riteish will also act in it.

Producing a Hindi remake of Balak Palak is also in his plans.

“Not necessarily every film needs to have a message. Some films have a message, but the story may be so boring that people don’t follow the message,” Riteish, son of late Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, said in a group interview.

“My aim as a producer is to make

films that appeal to me. When I read them (scripts), they have to be enter--taining,” he added, but clarified: “The choices that I make as a producer may not be the choices that I would make as an actor”. Directed by Ravi Jadhav, Balak Palak, a comedy-drama on sex ed--ucation among adolescents, crossed the 100-day mark in theatres after its release January 4.

After completing a decade on the big screen, Riteish turned to the small screen to judge dance reality show In--dia’s Dancing Superstar on Star Plus.

He feels “it is wrong to say TV is a small screen. I think TV is the actual big screen because it reaches to maximum number of people.”

The 34-year-old, who himself loves dancing, says he likes Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor and not to forget Govinda’s dancing skills.

“After spending 10 years in the industry, every time I do a song, I do it

to enjoy myself, because I am not here to prove any point. I dance to have fun,” he said.

“Every actor has his own way of dancing, some people are really great at dancing. I really find Hrithik fantastic. I also like Shahid and Ranbir as a danc--er, but more than that I like Govinda as a dancer, because he has his own style,” he added. Recollecting his 10-year jour--ney in front of the camera, Riteish said it was “great” having worked with many filmmakers.

“I have worked with friends Sajid Khan and Sujoy Ghosh. I have worked with new filmmakers and old ones like David Dhawan. I have worked with Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan. So it’s been a fulfilling journey till now,” said the actor who came into showbiz in 2003 with Tujhe Meri Kasam.

Some of his hits include Masti and Housefull and Housefull 2.

Also working with director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba on this film made it a memorable experience.”

IN an industry where superstition is rampant, a star being a lucky mascot can become a common

belief after giving few consecutive hits. One such actress is Sonakshi Sinha, who is being recommended by most actors particularly since she has proved to be lucky for heroes like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar.

Akshay and Ajay reportedly keep recommending her name for their forthcoming films. While Ajay wants to work with Sonakshi after the success of Son of Sardaar but has to wait till later this year, as Akshay Kumar already has signed her for Vipul Shah’s Thuppaki remake. It is heard that Salman is also want--ing her for Dabangg-3, Sonakshi no doubt is one of the busiest actors in the industry.

But Sonakshi has kind of developed an allergy with the term ‘lucky mascot’. Obvi--ously, she thinks it takes away her credibility in no time. Few days back, when Ranveer Singh, her co-star from their upcoming Lootera called her the lucky mascot, Sonakshi promptly said, “Guess people are signing me only because I have proved to be lucky, not because of my talent,” silencing one and all on the dias.

Further, when somebody asked her whether she had hiked up her fee, the actress sounding sarcastic said, “Why shouldn’t I hike my fee, isn’t it my right to do so?” Looks like she is gradually going on the lines of her father Shatrughan Sinha who was also known for his quick repartee and heavy dialogues.

When asked if he has plans to make films like Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore or Singham, in which the heroes were por--trayed larger-than-life, he answered in the negative.

“For everyone, the definition of larger- than-life is different. For me larger-than-life means films like Johnny Gaddaar,” he said.

IF you can get past the dubious name, Ferrari’s Enzo-succeeding LaFerrari looks fully prepared to carry the torch that has passed through four previous generations of Ferrari supercar.

Powered by the HY-KERS system devel--oped alongside Ferrari’s Formula 1 racing efforts, the LaFerrari incorporates a 789-hp, 6.3-liter V-12 internal combustion engine paired with a 120-kW (161-hp) electric mo--tor. (A second electric motor powers the car’s ancillary components.) Coupled with Fer--rari’s F1 dual-clutch gearbox, Ferrari claims a sub-3-second 0-62-mph time and a sub-7-second 0-124-mph sprint. There’s no word on top speed, but Ferrari says that, with a Fiorano lap time of less than 1:20, the LaFer--rari is 5 seconds quicker around its home track than the Enzo and more than 3 seconds quicker than Ferrari’s current front-engine flagship F12 Berlinetta.

The HY-KERS battery pack is mounted on the floor of the new Ferrari and manufac--tured alongside battery packs built for racing applications. Ferrari says the 132-pound pack is charged both under braking and also whenever the car’s traction control needs to bleed off torque to maintain control. The hybrid system fits within the car’s wheelbase, contributing to 41/59 percent front/rear weight distribution, an “ideal” figure, accord--ing to Ferrari.

As we previously learned, the LaFer--rari’s chassis is constructed of carbon fibre for rigidity and light weight—four types of

carbon fibre, to be exact. The material is hand-laminated and cured in Ferrari’s race shop using the same technique as on the company’s F1 machines. Ferrari’s top-tier race drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa are said to have had input into the car’s interior design in an attempt to bring as much single-seater driving position to the LaFerrari as possible. The driver’s seat is fixed and built to driver specification, while the steering wheel and pedals are adjustable to achieve proper reach.

The LaFerrari uses active aerodynam--ics—the front underbody guide vane, rear spoiler, and diffusers automatically adjust

based on commands from the car’s elec--tronic brain. Brakes are lightweight Brembos with a new composition of carbon-ceramic discs. Unique Pirelli P Zero tires are at all four corners.

Styling was handled in-house, in keeping with current Ferrari practices. Chief designer Flavio Manzoni worked a bit of ’60s sports car prototype in the front end (think 312 P) along with recent F1 (check out the nose’s vertical pillar). The overall effect is graceful sculpture instead of wind-tunnel exercise, which critics of the Pininfarina-penned Enzo will appreciate. And appreciate the LaFerrari we likely will: Just 499 are to be built.

MOST people associate asparagus and its fresh, strong, grassy flavour with the onset of spring. But as spring wanes and

summer advances, there are still stalks at the market, and they work beautifully in a warm-weather bean salad.

Asparagus takes kindly to gentle pairings, particularly starchy ones (pas--ta, potatoes and rice), which tame the pungency of the stalk and add enough bulk to turn a vegetable into a meal. Soft, earthy white beans are a variation on this theme. Here, I have tossed pieces of as--paragus and white beans with a garlicky tarragon-lemon dressing.

I have made this salad several times, using freshly cooked dried beans and canned beans. And while I’m usually a fan of the freshly cooked legumes, in this case, it wasn’t a given. The dried can--nellini and navy beans I bought at the supermarket cooked up inconsistently, with some beans turning to mush while others remained stubbornly and unappealingly al dente.

Then I tried the recipe with a 10-ounce vacuum-packed bag of $12 heir--loom Italian controne beans from a specialty store. These cooked up creamy and evenly and were absolutely terrific with the asparagus. But they did pitch the salad out of the everyday realm.

I am happy to report that when I made this salad with canned Great Northern beans, they turned out beauti--fully. Maybe they weren’t quite as good as the fancy beans, but they were a whole lot easier to deal with and less expensive, too.

All of this is to say, when it comes to the beans in this recipe, you have op--tions. Use what works for you. Make the salad a few hours before when you want to serve it, if you have the time; this gives the beans a chance to soak up the dress--ing.

I ate this versatile dish for lunch, for dinner over greens, and as a side dish with roasted chicken. It’s ideal picnic fare, too, since it will keep at room temperature for several hours with no ill effects, which is what you want in a fresh summer salad.

WHITE BEAN AND ASPARAGUS SALAD WITH TARRAGON-LEMON DRESSING

Time: 20 minutes, plus soaking and

cooking time if using dried beansYield: 4 to 6 servings Ingredients

8 ounces dried white beans or 2 (15-ounce) cans Great Northern or cannellini beans

Salt2 bay leaves, if using dried beans1 pound asparagus1/2 cup tarragon leaves1 teaspoon packed finely grated

lemon zest2 garlic cloves, peeled1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black

pepper1 large lemon, juiced, plus more to

taste1/2 cup olive oil

Method

1. If using canned beans, drain and rinse. If using dried beans, soak in

plenty of water for 6 hours or overnight. Drain beans and transfer to a medium pot. Cover beans by 2 inches with water and add 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and the bay leaves. Simmer until just tender but

not at all mushy, about 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending upon what kind of beans you’re using. Drain.

2. Break off tough ends of the aspara--gus. Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil and prepare a bowl with ice and cold water. Blanch trimmed asparagus for 1 1/2 minutes, or until just cooked but still firm, then plunge them into the ice bath. Let sit for 5 minutes, then drain. Pat dry and slice diagonally into 1/2-inch pieces.

3. In a blender or food processor, combine tarragon, lemon zest, garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, the black pepper and the lemon juice, and process until garlic is chopped. Pour in olive oil. Process until mixture is well blended and bright green, about 1 minute.

4. In a large mixing bowl, gently toss together beans, asparagus and dressing. Taste and add more lemon juice and salt if needed.

Asparagus adds green to a bean salad

I dug up the soup recipe I remembered from my grade-school years, a simple brew of canned tomatoes, onion, cream and chicken broth simmered until thick

HOW would it look if the worn out motherboard of a computer becomes your coaster or the headlight of a bike turns into your

desk lamp or tyre tube used as a wallet and the door of an old refrigerator as the centre table of your room? This is not wild imagination but creative ways of using scrap and making it look chic.

Recycling and reuse have become quite a trend as many entrepreneurs found innovative ways to make “ugly look beautiful”. Now, upcycling is fast catching up. It involves converting discarded material or waste into useful products or something that is eye-catching and user-friendly.

“There are two aspects to recycling: downcycling and upcycling. Downcyc--ling is recycling an existing product to make the same product out of it, which is of lower value and quality.

Through upcycling you move up the value chain and come to realise that trash is not ugly,” Mad--hvi Khaitan, founder and director of WorkshopQ, told IANS.

She along with Radhika Khaitan (no kin) began their online portal in April 2010 driven by the bug of creat--ing awareness and contributing to the environment.

They churn out quirky and inno--vative products like trays, coasters, photoframes, placemats, pen stands, card-holders, tissue boxes, lamps, chandeliers, mirrors and office acces--sories - all from scrap. The products are priced between Rs50 and Rs7,000.

Radhika said their emphasis is on the utility of the product.

“We have to think out-of-the-box to lure people,” she said.

According to Natasha Bohra, founder of Chromakey, scrap needs a lot of treatment and thinking.

“The designers have to experiment and come up with the final product after many hits and misses. The com--petition is growing in this niche seg--ment; so brainstorming is necessary,” Bohra told IANS over the phone from Mumbai.

“Usually we throw away scrap but if one looks at it in a creative manner it can be turned chic. This is what we are doing. Making ugly look beautiful,” she added.

Chromakey offers desklamps made

of motorbike headlights, coasters made of worn out motherboards, et al. The products are priced between Rs500 and Rs30,000.

Taking this green movement a step forward is Vimlendu Jha, who has opened an office entirely made out of waste.

Jha is the founder of Swechha, an NGO involved in environmental and social development issues and green--thegap.com, its eco-fashion arm.

“Save is just a word that is re--stricted to our heads. How many of us are actually making efforts to clean our environment?

When you think of scrap, you think of a dustbin and the foul smell that comes along with it. So, the challenge for us is not to make a product, but to think about its utility,” said Jha whose greenthegap.com acts as a platform for other eco-friendly websites to market their products.

Everything in Jha’s new office, ranging from storage space and parti--tions to lamp shades, is made out of trash. From cassette covers and paint boxes, to bicycle and motorbike parts, the NGO has used them all for decora--tion.

The two-storey office spread over a 36,000 sq foot area cost Rs300,000. It would have otherwise cost Rs15 lakh

Thanks to the organised scrap mar--ket in the country, there are no hassles in sourcing raw material.

“There are waste dealers in Malviya Nagar and scrap markets in Seelampur and Sadar Bazar. If one needs to buy tyres in bulk, that too is easy. Basically, there are different markets for differ--ent materials,” Jha explained.

All these innovators faced one com--mon problem: Convincing people to buy their products.

“There are pre-conceived notions about eco-friendly products and the mindset that ‘if this is made from scrap, then why should we pay for it’ are the biggest obstacles we once dealt with,” said Madhvi. Things however soon changed.

“The only way out to change this was our stylish designs and proving to people that being eco-friendly can also mean lots of fun.

This process will definitely take time, but we feel that India is soon going to be on the same level as the western countries when it comes to green products,” Madhvi added.

Star Talk By King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Your home routine will be interrupted today. Surprise company might drop by today, so stock the fridge. (You might have an impromptu party.)

This is an accident-prone day, so pay attention to everything you say and do. You’re keen to talk to others and learn something fresh and exciting. (Avoid bores.)

Keep an eye on your money today, because you might find money or lose money. Something you own also might get lost, stolen or broken. Be vigilant.

Today feels like there is more electrical energy in the air. You’re eager for change or for something unusual to happen. You want adventure! (Just wait five minutes.)

Secrets or unexpected information about someone might come out today. (Someone might be shocked.) Behind-the-scenes love affairs easily can take place.

You might meet someone new and unusual today, especially in a group. This person could knock your socks off. Or possibly, someone you already know will do something that shocks you.

You might flirt with someone in a position of authority today. (A lot of people feel like doing this today.) If you’re not a teabag, stay out of hot water.

Travel plans might be changed or delayed. Conversely, an unexpected trip suddenly might fall into your lap. Whatever happens will require a swift decision on your part.

Make friends with your bank account today, because something unusual might occur with funds or debt that you share with others. This also could apply to inheritances, shared property and insurance matters.

A friend or partner might surprise you today. Perhaps this person demands more freedom? Whatever the case, stay light on your feet, and be ready to go with the flow.

Computer crashes, canceled meetings, staff shortages and power outages are just some of the reasons that your day at work will go sideways in a New York minute. Allow extra wiggle room.

This is an accident-prone day for your kids or for children you work with, so be extra-vigilant. Know what’s happening at all times. (However, romance might provide exciting flirtations.)
