FERNDALE 21 miles north of the “Avenue of the Giants” in a thriving dairycommunity, discover Northern California’s best-kept secret—The Victorian Village ofFerndale. Enjoy magnificently preserved Victorian architecture as you stroll Ferndale’sMain Street. It is a photographer’s paradise and a shopper’s delight. Explore the old-fashioned mercantiles, antique stores, art galleries, and specialty shops, hear the ringing
of the blacksmith’s hammer, and talk with the friendly people.
THE DYERVILLE GIANT when measured in 1972,stood 362 feet tall which is 200 feet taller than Niagara Falls orcomparable to a 30-story building. It had a circumference of 52feet, four inches and a crown spread of 74 feet and weighedmore than a loaded 747 jumbo jet (1,000,000 lbs). The DyervilleGiant’s crown is now in pieces, but the tree’s final height hasbeen estimated at about 370 feet, certainly within several feetof having been the tallest tree in the world.
Even for those who saw it when it was still standing, itssize is difficult to comprehend. The Dyerville Giant wasrecognized as the “Champion” Coast Redwood ascertified by the American Forestry Association untilit fell on March 24, 1991. Experience it during yourvisit to the Founder’s Grove, just north of Weott, south of Redcrest off Dyerville Loop Road.
This world-famous scenic drive is an alternate 31-mile portion of the original Hwy 101, which now parallels the new Hwy 101 with its 51,222 acres of magnificnet redwood groves. It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant treesin the entire 500 mile redwood belt and is easily accessible with convenient services provided along theway. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has thelargest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Take time to picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft, bike ride, or simply experiencepeace in the cool hush of these ancient
old growth forests.
