In the 1960s, Club leaders expanded Carmel to 36 holes and built a spacious new Club-house. We were the first club in the area to have two golf courses, and this was providen-tial. In the 1970s both Carmel and the city of Charlotte grew rapidly. Our membership

increased from 709 in 1970 to 1,110 ten years later. Fred Stubblefield, 1988 Club President, was quoted in a history of Carmel as saying “Those guys in the ‘60s took some risks and laid the groundwork for everything that followed.”

At the Annual Meeting I shared my opinion that it’s important for us to continue building on the contributions and work of past leaders. Over the decades Carmel has proven to be a club that follows through with its plans and takes member satisfaction seriously. The im-provements Carmel made in the 1960s helped insure the Club’s success during subsequent years of growth. Our vision statement calls for an “ongoing pursuit of excellence”, which I believe speaks to our ongoing tradition of excellence.

We’ll open a new dining facility in July and launch the North Course renovation in Novem-ber. We’re also making improvements to several other areas of the Club. These important

projects build on our success, help us stay relevant to our members, and also help shape Carmel’s identity for years to come. The number one goal this year for the Board and for committees with oversight on these renovation projects is their successful execution.

That’s not our only focus, however. Going beyond facilities to the entire member experience, other goals and objectives have been identified for the Board, committees and staff. These respond to the last two membership satisfaction surveys and build on the work of years past.

Updates about all projects are regularly posted on the website and included in weekly eblasts. Board and committee goals and a summary of the survey results are also on the website. Keeping all members informed is a priority. I hope you’ll continue to share feedback about your experiences at Carmel. It’s important to our success to stay on top of satisfaction levels among our diverse membership, and your input helps us do that. Another highlight from the Annual Meeting was an observation by last year’s President Tim Jones that as members we “vote with our feet.” By coming to Carmel and being engaged we demonstrate that we find value in what’s offered at our Club. From that perspective this year is off to an excellent start. As you can see in this edition of the Carmeline, there are many ways to enjoy your Club this spring. I hope you’ll continue to follow the updates and progress reports we share about the projects underway and those to come.

Thanks to all members for your continuing strong support of your Club.

Soon after you receive this Carmeline we expect the Golf Shop to reopen following the fire. I’d like to provide some information for you about the facility, although far be it from me to attempt to reach the comedic heights achieved by Head Pro Jason

Toryk in his emailed updates about golf operations during the reconstruction. The efforts of Jason, Jeff Nichols and the entire staff to keep operations running smoothly have been exemplary. Big thanks to the entire team.

The smoke from the fire reached both sides of the building in spite of the firewall separat-ing the two sides. Smoke damage on the bag room side was much more extensive, and the restoration company and contractors had to effect a more extensive removal and replace-ment of walls, ventilation systems and all surfaces. The attic and structural beams were repainted and resealed, and all flooring and ceiling tiles were replaced.

On the Pro Shop side all textile surfaces were removed and professionally cleaned or replaced. Smooth surfaces and furniture were deep cleaned and returned to service. The same sealing treatment was performed on the attic, and all carpet and ventilation systems were replaced.

What we’re working toward is a facility free of any smell, returned in better condition that when the disaster occurred. Merchandise has been replaced and more will arrive as spring orders are released from the vendors. Carmel is very for-tunate to have a long relationship with our insurance broker Chuck Hood. He shepherded us through the process with equal amounts of compassion and professional expertise.

Grill renovations are proceeding nicely and on schedule. General contractor Barringer is doing top-notch work, and only minor issues were found “behind the walls” as we moved through the demo process. Its hard-hats only in the construction space right now, and a major next step will be to break through existing exterior walls and add the addition to the rear of the Clubhouse. You can follow progress reports on the website and through the e-blasts.

It’s exciting to see the membership enjoying the alternate dining spaces with such frequency and enthusiasm. We’re making use of the Terrace, Club Lounge and Men’s Grill, and activity remains comparable to years past. Ku-dos to the staff. They’re literally taking many “extra steps” to get meals to your tables in areas of the Clubhouse much further than the kitchen. It’s taken hard work, planning and skill for them to execute so well. I salute their efforts and am doubly glad you the members are embracing these alternate dining options.

When the Grill renovation was green-lighted in October, we considered options for repurposing the furniture and fixtures already in use. The Board made the decision to salvage the best of it, including the beautiful bar from the Couples Lounge, and create a lounge in the tennis building. Members have long asked for this to be updated and made a useful space. To the right is a floor plan; you’ll see we’re even including the fireplace from the Grill.

I’m looking forward to spring and getting past “hard hat” season here at Carmel. Hope you and your family enjoy the warm weather on its way.

JOHN M. SCHULTZ, CCMGeneral Manager

CARMEL SPEAKER SERIES: FAMED NOVELIST, MARY FLINNWednesday, March 117pm, Clubhouse$15/person

A native of North Carolina, award-winning author Mary Flinn long ago fell in love with her state’s mountains and its coast, creating the backdrops for her series of novels, The One, Second Time’s a Charm, Three Gifts, A Forever Man, and The Nest. With degrees from both the University of North Caro-lina at Greensboro and East Carolina University, Flinn has re-tired from her first career as a speech pathologist in the NC public schools that began in 1981. Writing a novel had always been a dream for Flinn, who began crafting the pages of The One, when her younger daughter left for college at Appala-chian State University in 2009. The characters in this book have continued to call to her, wanting more of their story told, which bred the next three books in the series.

Flinn has recently been the recipient of the Reader Views Literary Awards 2012 Reviewers’ Choice honorable men-tion in the romance category for A Forever Man. First Place Award for Romance Novel in the Reader Views 2011 Liter-ary Book Awards, as well as the Pacific Book Review Best Romance Novel of 2011 went to Three Gifts. Second Time’s a Charm, also released in 2011, won an Honorable Mention in the Reader Views Reviewers’ Choice Awards. Mary Flinn lives in Summerfield, North Carolina with her husband. They have two adult daughters.

On Thursday, March 11, Mary Flinn will be at Carmel to dis-cuss the writing process and her novels, in particular her most recent novel, her 6th, Breaking Out. If you would like to read some of Mary’s work before March 11, books will be for sale through Kerry Flye. In order to plan on your attendance, reservations are recommended and easy to make online.

TRAINER FIT-TIP Fuel Up: Katharine’s Pre-Workout AdvicePoor eating habits can undermine even the best efforts to stay fit. It is important to eat a balanced pre-workout meal to help sustain you through-out your workout and to help you push through those final minutes. While every body is different, these 5 simple rules can ensure that your body and workout is fueled properly: 1. eat carbohydrates for energy 2. eat protein for recovery 3. eat healthy fats for endurance4. don’t run on empty, be sure to eat before working out5. allow 30-60 minutes post pre-workout meal to digest before working outHere are three of my favorite pre-workout meals that I eat to help fuel my body for my workouts: banana with peanut butter on whole wheat (or whole grain) toast, oats with a dash of cinnamon and greek yogurt, or an apple with almond butter. Experiment with it, have fun, and don’t forget to fuel up! ~ Certified Personal Trainer Katharine Oweida
