MINISTRY INSIGHT …… TIME IN A BOTTLE In November, 1973, singer/song writer, Jim Croce, released his most signature song, “Time In A Bottle.” He wrote the song for his wife, Ingrid, who at the time was pregnant with their son. When the song was released, his son, Adrian James (AJ) was 13 months old. Jim Croce died in a plane crash one (1) month after the song was released. To this day, it is considered by many, the most beautiful and impactful love song ever written. What makes a song impactful is not just the melody of the music or the instrumentation or even the voice of the singer, but the words themselves. Over two thousand years ago, a great song writer enters this world and into our lives. The music he spoke then and speaks now is one of love and forgiveness. He loves us so much, that he will die, so that we may live. His songs are written in the most sacred of books, The Holy Bible. Every day, somewhere in this world, his songs are played in the heart of the mass. His words are music to our ears and among the faithful, give us the strength and courage to know that no matter what we have and will face, his love is always there for all time. “If I could save time in a bottle, the first that I’d like to do…” Growing up, I can remember all the times, I wish I had more time: time to play; to fish, to read, and sometimes just to sleep and rest. I remember my Dad telling me that I could save money and things, but I could never save time. His favorite statement to me about time was simple: “the difference between a rich man and a poor man, is what they do with their time.” And so, when I grew up and went to work, I didn’t have “time in a bottle”, so I did the next best thing, I took time management courses and got a planner. If it wasn’t in the planner/calendar, I didn’t have to do it. And then one day, I learned that time is a promissory note guaranteed to no one. When my father died at 52, I knew I had no more time to say and do the things that only time would allow me to do. On Sunday, September 20, 2020, in Matthew’s Gospel 20:1-16a, we hear the parable of the landowner, who went out at different times to hire laborers for his vineyard. There are many great homilies that have been said and written about this rich and powerful parable. The message is clear: the vineyard is the Kingdom of Heaven; and the laborers are you and me, called to work the vineyard for the Glory of God and the time is NOW. It is never too late, to be that laborer that the Lord has called us to be. “But there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do when you find them…” Perhaps, this lyric from “Time In A Bottle” is God’s way of reminding us of that promissory note. Maybe it’s time to work in the vineyard of the Lord, through prayer, acts of mercy and justice. To love thy brother and sister, as the Lord loves you. To show kindness and share the richness of God’s love to everyone you meet. We must be better than just Catholic. As disciples of Christ Jesus, we are called to be Saints. The road is filled with obstacles, but we have been given the road maps to follow: The Ten Commandments and The Beatitudes. When all is said and done, may your love song to Christ, Our Lord, end as the lyrics of “Time In A Bottle” …” I’ve looked around enough to know that you're the one I want to go through time with”. - Phil Moralez, Knight of Columbus, Council #7241
