The use of bells can be found throughout history. England developed an extensive use of church tower bells. There were differing peals for fire, baptism, alarm, market selling, wedding, death etc. Handbells were developed in England around 1700, originally used as rehearsal bells. They became popular in worship in the 20th century. A bell choir shares in a common task, individually playing their part for the corporate good. This is much like the church.

This month we commemorate UMW’s 150th year of being in mission.

UMW “shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.” For more information, contact Marge Stephens at 334 703-8174 or [email protected]

This psalm appears to have been written as some sort of liturgical procession, perhaps after a national victory or deliverance, and led by a king.

Martin Luther wrote, “This is my psalm, my chosen psalm. I love them all; but this psalm is nearest my heart ..

It is my friend; dearer to me than all the honors and power of the earth.”

We are grateful that you chose to worship with us. Following the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20, we seek to Offer the love of Christ, Nurture others, and Serve all, so that everyone discovers the Transforming grace of Jesus Christ. If this is your first time worshipping with us, please fill out one of the Connection Cards located in front of you in the pews. We also invite you to visit our website, www.aumc.net to discover the many opportunities available for you this week. We are so happy you are here.

With the Lord by my side, I do not fear. What can mortals do to me?

SANDRA WATWOOD, ORGAN

God of Grace, We thank You for being our hiding place in times of trouble and when we feel overwhelmed. You listen to us even when our sighs are too deep for words. We see corruption and lack of justice, yet we do not lose hope. Show us a vision of our world where mercy and love infuse every aspect of life. Help us live lives worthy of Your call. You are our God. All thanks and praise to You. Amen.

Habakkuk in iconography is often depicted holding a scroll with the text from the Book of Habakkuk. The prophet’s other hand points to his ear, which symbolizes the vision he received from God.

Habakkuk addressed God about the perversion of justice in Judean society. There was abuse of power in the administration and judicial systems under King Jehoiakim (609-597 BCE). It resulted in exploitation of the poor by the rich and powerful. Habakkuk argues with God, awaiting an answer. He is trying to juxtapose a just God with an unjust world. God responds with the message (vision) of resolution: God will act sometime in the future.
