THE RECTORY January 2019 Dear All Newsletter January 2019 Happy New Year and lots of thanks for all the lovely Christmas cards I have received. It is always sad to take them down on Twelfth Night. I always get out my bulbs from under the stairs to take their place and remind me of Spring soon to come. Seems strange to be writing 2019.We begin the New Year with The Feast of the Epiphany, on the 6th January at the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas. For once the Sunday falls on the right day, when we remember the visit of the Maji to the Christ Child. Some of you may have been surprised at Mudford Carol Service that they did not get a mention. It is because we are having a special Carol Service to celebrate this event at 4pm. By this time the Magi and their steeds will have reached the Crib on the 6th.This is your chance to sing the carols about the Magi or Wise Men or kings and we will have the benefit of the Benefice Choir and Ken Sherrin playing the organ. We will have had two Sundays of Christmas and then the 6th begins four Sundays of the season of Epiphany still with the celebratory white vestments in our churches and in Marston Magna Church a special Epiphany candle. Epiphany means “manifestation”, the manifestation of who the child Jesus is, which is not just to the Jewish people but to the Gentiles, everyone one else too. The Magi are thought to have been from countries far away from Israel to the east, later traditions even gave them names, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar remember going to Cologne many years ago where legend has them buried in the Cathedral. This manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles fits in well with the Conversion of St Paul on the 25th of January, who, more than anyone, began to take the message of Jesus to foreign lands and ends the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. We also remember in January the Baptism of Christ, another epiphany of who Jesus is, and his first miracle, changing the water into wine at the Marriage at Cana. Confirmation - If anyone is interested in being Confirmed, classes will begin. Confirmation confirms promises made at Christening and Baptism on behalf of a child by parents and godparents. At Confirmation these promises are made by adults for themselves. After Confirmation it is possible to receive Holy Communion, the bread and wine Jesus taught us to remember him by. Confirmation is done by a bishop at very special service. If anyone is interested in learning more about Christianity with a view to being confirmed please get in touch with me. 850745. Revd. HELP required 10-5 Monday -Saturday. Contact Steve Hart on stevehart@capuk.org or text 07449167058 Plough Sunday 13th January .9.30 Chilton Cantelo - We have not had one of these before at Chilton. Plough Sunday is the first Sunday after Epiphany. It is one of the four agricultural services celebrated in England along with Rogation, Lammas and Harvest. It happens at a cold time of year when workers may not have been needed on farms and farm hands suffered hardship. They would go around villages with a plough and be given food to help them out. The plough would end up at the Church and be blessed in the hope of a good harvest later in the year. If you are coming to this service, it would be good to bring some non-perishable food stuffs for the Lord's Larder. The churches do support the Lord's Larder throughout the year and we have had a wonderful letter of thanks to pass on to those who do so much to give this support which is so badly needed in our time. The speaker at Marston Magna WI on January 14th .12.30 beginning with a soup and cake lunch will be Matt Callaghan from the Lord's Larder. Matt is also Revd. Edd and Eileen Bungay's son-in law. Barbara Letter from the Right Reverend Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton For Parish Newsletters – January 2019 The joy of a return The country of Ghana is making 2019 ‘The Year of Return’ to mark 400 years of the slave trade. Akwase Agyeman who is heading up this year of celebration said this: ‘We will celebrate the resilience of the African. Like Joseph in the Bible who was sold to slavery and later connected to his brothers, there was a celebration and in 2019 there shall be a celebration for Africans in Diaspora’

I wonder how we might make 2019 ‘a year of return’. I don’t mean as a return to things past because we mourn a past glory. I’m thinking of the story of Joseph. Joseph was separated from family because his family were jealous of him. His brothers sold him into slavery, out of sight, out of mind. It’s when they have need of food that they inadvertently come across Joseph again, this time he holds their fate in his hands. It would have been so easy for Joseph to seek to get his own back on his brothers. In fact, he does play a trick on them. However, when all is revealed we find many tears shed and reconciliation is achieved. I wonder how many families in our communities have faced such a fracture in relationships? Rembrandt’s famous painting, ‘The Return of the Prodigal’ is one of those iconic pictures which draws us into experiencing the depth of feeling the parable speaks of. The embrace of the father to the kneeling son shows us not only the emotion of a family relationship restored but that of God’s love for us, his wandering people. Many of us have personal experience of discovering the love of the Father for us, his children. Perhaps this year we could pass on that story to others and help them to find the joy and celebration of a return to the Father who gave everything in order to release them from the slavery of sin. Rimpton Coffee Morning The coffee morning at Barton Farm, in aid of the Carol Concert and Village Party, raised a wonderful total of £218.50. Thank you to Helen and Peter O’Brien for the use of their home and to Helen for all her hard work. I mentioned in my October report that the drought appeared to be coming to an end. This certainly proved to be the case with November having 19 wet days totalling 125.5 mms (5 inches) well above the November average 96 mms (3 ¾ inches). Wednesday 7th November saw the wettest day of 2018 so far with a hefty 26 mms (1 inch). November and October have fought it out for some years for the title of highest average monthly rainfall, and for a few years October has been winning. But this year the November average has risen from 96 mms to 97 mms, whereas October dropped from 96.5 mms to 95 mms making November the current champion. November is also at a slight disadvantage having only 30 day which in theory gives October a 3 mm advantage. November 2002 is the wettest month I have ever recorded with 189.5 mms (7 ½ inches) and 2004 the driest November with 27 mms (1 inch).

This information could help save a loved one's life!

Every year in Britain around 30,000 people are struck by sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital environments. It can affect anyone at any time - from young children at school, to adults when they are at home, work or public places. Every minute without CPR and Defibrillation reduces a victim's survival rate by 7 to 10 per cent. Without immediate treatment 90-95 per cent of cardiac arrests prove fatal. Our village recognises the need and advantages of CPR and Defibrillation and accordingly have the necessary Equipment and Responders to deal with this situation. Our group has regular training sessions held in the village hall and we would like to invite interested villagers to a demonstration on how resuscitation works after the training session. This information could help save a loved one's life! Our next training session will be held on Saturday 8th December 10.30 am until 11.30 am everyone is welcome. Christmas recycling and waste reminder Kerbside recycling and refuse collections will take place as usual on Monday 24 December. Between Tuesday 25 December and Friday 28 December, all scheduled collections are two days later, including Friday pick-ups on Sunday 30 December. There are no changes to services on Monday 31 December. Between Tuesday 1 January and Friday 4 January, all scheduled collections are one day later, including Friday collections on Saturday 5 January. These revised dates include assisted and clinical waste collection services. Please ensure you have your recycling and waste ready for collections by 7am and no earlier than the night before (NB - clinical collections start from 5.30am). Do remember that on Monday 24 December and Monday 31 December all sites usually open until 7pm will be closing at 4pm.

All recycling sites will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Bank Holiday Monday. For

Items brought for discussion were as follows:

Concern was raised about cars parking on

Camel Street with cones placed behind the cars.

This is causing an obstruction. An alternate view

was offered that this was a deliberate act to slow

the flow of traffic, which is of concern to many

Parishioners. FM will raise the issue with

Thelma Mead (PCSO).

A resident of West End raised the issue of a

suspected Brothel/drugs den in the area. They

have contacted the Police who have visited

several times. Yarlington have also been advised

but are unwilling to take any action. FM will raise

the issue with Thelma Mead (PCSO)

The CC Highways dept. is looking at the

manhole cover 20m from the Rimpton Rd

Junction, on the Fir Villas side in the middle of

the footpath, which appears to be unsafe. They

have passed it to Wessex Water for further

inspection.

The state of the Moat Field has not been

improved. Somerset Heritage have stated that

they are not willing to carry out further work, as

they want to maintain the bio-diversity of the

area. RK contacted them again to convey the

concerns of the Parishioners. They are unwilling

to take any further action until the spring. RK is

seeking permission for us to arrange for the area

to be cut by ourselves.

Regarding the poor state of the path from West

End to the Village Hall owned by Yarlington

Housing. LG has written to them regularly,

asking for action to be taken to cut back

chasing regularly to find out when this will be

5. REPORTS FROM SOMERSET COUNTY

COUNCILLOR, DISTRICT COUNCILLORS,

PARISH REPRESENTATIVES ON OUTSIDE

BODIES AND COUNCILLORS ON THEIR

AREAS OF INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY –

ML advised us that the projected deficit for SCC

to the end of this financial year has reduced very

significantly. This is largely due to increased

government funding for Highways and Social

Services as well as many cost saving measures

being introduced. We asked if there was any

progress on the Small Improvement Scheme.

ML assures us that he is still working on this. PG

has received correspondence from the CC

asking us to classify the usage of each of the

footpaths in our Parish. This was discussed, and

we agreed which were in constant daily use and

which were a little more occasionally used. PG

will respond to this request.

6. COUNCILLOR VACANCY – Howard

Butterfield was proposed as a new Councillor. It

was unanimously decided to co-opt him onto the

Parish Council. He was given the register of

business interest form to complete. LG will notify

the necessary authorities and update the

website.

7. MARSTON MAGNA ACTION GROUP – The

group has met twice, working on Newbury Lane

and the Village Hall, they are meeting again this

weekend to continue working on the same areas.

R Mayo has commenced work on clearing the

stream. He hopes to finish this work shortly.

LH is look for local volunteers willing to take on

the task of improving the fingerposts within the

village. Once these are in place, he will make a

request for financial assistance from the PC.

8. PLAY PARK – KW has been carrying out

monthly visual inspections of the play park.

There is nothing new to report. The Summer Fair

committee has offered to donate £500 towards a

new piece of equipment for the play park. KW

has done some research and believes that a

form of balance/climbing bar would be popular.

She asked if the PC at our last meeting if we

would be willing to match this amount. KW is still

waiting for quotes to be returned in order for us

to make a decision.

9. VILLAGE HALL - SC and LH are now

members of the Village Hall Committee. They

are currently investigating an upgrade to the fire

alarm system within the hall. The Charity

Commission accounts issue is almost resolved.

10. FOOTPATH AT WEST END FARM - PG has

established that the District Council would have

no objection to the re-routing of this footpath,

however they estimate the cost of this at being

around £2500. The landowner would be liable

for this. He has already said that he would be

unwilling to pay this amount for a very small

diversion. PG will continue to investigate a

possible solution to this issue.

11. RECREATION FIELD – The owners of the

field next to the Village Hall attended the meeting

with a rough outline of a development they are

proposing to put forward for outline planning

permission. This would include 12 properties

with parking and an offer of an addition piece of

land to be used as a Village recreation field and

possibly additional parking for the Village Hall.

Access is currently shown as off the A359,

immediately next to the Village Hall entrance, for

10 of the properties. The remaining two

properties would be accessed via Fiddle Lane.

Comments and questions from Councillors and

members of the Public present were: Could they

consider sharing the access with the Village

Hall? The use of Fiddle Lane being

inappropriate, as it is not adopted and is in a poor

state of repair. Would they consider moving the

development closer to the Village Hall and one of

the properties nearest to the neighbour at the far

side being limited to a single storey? Would it be

possible to put in some form of pedestrian

crossing on the A359, to enable residents from

the far side of the Village to cross to the Hall

more safely?

News from your Village Agent

Transport and the potential difficulties of getting out and about come to mind when I think of January. Whether it is coming across a flooded lane on the way to work or sliding across icy roads as a driver or a pedestrian, the winter months can present some challenges.

Preparation is important when heavy snow and/or floods can cut off villages and small towns. Suggestions for coping include stocking UHT/Long-life milk and some frozen bread and vegetables. Put a torch in a place where you can find it quickly. Check your oil levels and have your boiler serviced, cover your outdoor tap and combi boiler condensate pipes (the bit outside that can freeze). Check on elderly neighbours who may find it harder to get out in the snow and ice and can be trapped at home. If you live alone or are frail, it is important to get out in your local area all year. Use your shops, local pubs and social groups so that people will know about you and think of you at

these times. Ensure you have alerted your utilities providers that you are a priority customer.

Don’t forget to prepare for storms by securing anything outside including taking care of your trees – willow branches are prone to snapping and need branches with cracks or rot removed. Contact Western Power Distribution or telecoms providers if a tree is hanging over or brushing on lines. Listen to local radio and check if buses are running and whether it is advisable to drive.

The roads have all been dressed this year, which improves skidding resistance and helps prevent those nasty potholes but in turn, the gritting routes have been reduced. Check with your village as some parishes have their own grit stores to distribute and may appreciate help with this. If you do need to drive in snow or ice make sure you are prepared – check your tyres and have a fluorescent, warm coat, boots, torch and a bottle of water with you. When driving on an icy road, the first thing to remember is to slow down. You are more likely to see an ice patch and will be able to correct for it. It is frightening when your car gets a mind of its own and the presence of flood filled, deep ditches at the side of our roads doesn’t help. Advice copied from DVSA follows:

Don't accelerate suddenly or harshly. Don't brake harshly. Don't brake while cornering. Watch out for slippery road surfaces and keep your speed down if you think the road is slippery. Use engine braking as well as the brakes to slow the vehicle down. If you do encounter a skid, steer gently into it, for example if the rear of the car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. Many people take the risk and drive through the floods. This is a real risk as the car can float or travel on strong currents. Water can find its way into the air intake on some vehicles, causing serious engine damage even in shallow floods. If you have checked that it is shallow enough to drive through, the water is probably deepest near the kerb and shallowest at the crown. Drive in first gear as slowly as possible but keep the engine speed high and steady by slipping the clutch. If the engine speed is too low, you might stall. If you go too fast, you could create a bow wave. Water will flood the engine and it could cut out. Test your brakes as soon as you can afterwards. Marston Magna & Rimpton WI Report for January 2019

The January meeting will be on Monday, January

14th, 2019 at 12.30 in the Village Hall. Lunch will

be served first and afterwards there will be a talk

about the work of the Lord’s Larder in Yeovil by

Matt Callaghan.

It is open every day for everyone as it has probably been for the thousand or so years that it has stood there. We think that this should continue to be so - for those people who seek a quiet and spiritual place and for those who just want to enjoy its history and architecture. A small team of people unlock the church each morning and lock it up again in the evening, and to them we are very grateful indeed. For various reasons this team is getting smaller and is now in need of reinforcement. The task is not physically difficult, but reliability is important. You do not have to be a churchgoer – just someone prepared to help.
