Cooperatives differ from other forms of business in that our consumers are member-owners of the company. Cooperatives are a not-for-profit business that exists solely to provide its members with electricity. As a member of an electric cooperative, you receive not only a needed ser-vice, but a benefit reserved for own-ers of a company--a return on your investment - called capital credits.

Capital credits come from margins, or the money left over, after all expenses are paid in a given year. If margins are available, that money is credited to your account accord-ing to the amount of electricity you purchased. Assigning capital cred-its to members, instead of paying dividends to distant stockholders, is just part of the accountability the Cooperative offers you. When the Cooperative’s finances permit, that money is returned to members in the form of capital credit checks.

Giving Back The Profits, Capital Credit Checks Coming

Being paid for patronizing your own company is just another benefit of buying your power from an electric cooperative. That’s the cooperative difference!

If you had electric service with Ci-marron Electric Cooperative in 1987

you will be included in the retire-ment of capital credits for that year. Approximately $500,000.00 will be returned to members based on the amount of electricity each mem-ber consumed in 1987. The checks will be mailed out in December and should arrive before Christmas.

Twin Lakes Substation Trouble

Big crane sets up in the sub.

New transformer is lifted in.

Portable substation keeps the power flowing during the work.

Some times things just quit. With no load, no bad weather or any reason what-so-ever, the trans-former in the Twin Lakes sub quit. It is less than 4 years old. We are thankful that the backup transform-er was installed quickly.

Cimarron Lineman Rodney Johnson Helps Electrify Village hirteen Oklahoma co-op volunteer linemen

departed the country in October for an important mission to Guatemala. One of the

Energy Trails team members was our own Rodney Johnson. The team built power lines in the isolated village of Chiis located in the north-western part of the country and provided first time electricity to about 80 families!

“I’ve always thought about how awesome it must have been for the first Cimarron linemen to bring electricity to folks for the first time. Now I know through the eyes and smiles, and even tears from the folks of Chiis,” said Rodney.

The Energy Trails Guatemala team electrified 65 homes in the isolated village of Chiis in north-western Guatemala. The team was comprised of 13 linemen, electricians and engineers, repre-senting Oklahoma electric cooperatives.

The village of Chiis sits atop a mountain at 2,700 feet in altitude. The project consisted of building 50 poles in challenging terrain and wiring the 65 homes in the span of 3 miles of line. Each house has 4 CFL lights and 2 outlets for plug ins. The village is isolated, economically vulnerable, and mainly produces beans, spices and corn for self consumption. Most villagers speak a Mayan-based dialect, Kekchi.

A local utility, Adecork, will generate power to the village by way of a small hydroelectric plant. It will maintain and provide service to the lines that Oklaho-ma’s electric coopera-

tive volunteers have built.

Despite communication barriers, the volunteers established friendships with local children and villagers.

“I will nev-er forget the bond we created with the local kids,” Rodney Johnson says. “I’m grateful we had the opportunity to help make a difference for them to have a better future. The kids were very excited to see us and be around us. The only difference I could see, com-paring them to our kids, was they were more driven to help the adults because of their eco-

nomic poverty.” Cimarron CEO, Mark Snowden said, “We’re proud of Rod-ney for his willingness to leave the com-forts of home to help an under served commu-nity. Access to

electricity is a life changing gift. I’m proud that the volunteers from Oklahoma worked so well together and did a wonderful job, with much of it done literally by hand and willpower. It was a job well done.”
