Part Two: TimelineSection A: Test your time skillsWhat do you know about history? You’ve heard the names of many famous people and may have heard about famous events. Do know when these persons lived or when the events occurred? Could you put any of these events on a timeline? In the box below, create a timeline from 1500A.D. to 2000A.D.. In this timeline, place important people or events that you know from the history of the world. You do not need to know the date of the event or when the person lived, you may place both in the appropriate century. Try this from memory. If you need a little help, there is a hint box below. Good Luck!

Calendars When you study history, it is important to take notes of dates. Dates tell you when something took place and help you keep track of the se-quence of events. Knowing the order in which events happened makes it easier to understand how one event may have influenced another. One of the ways to remember the correct order of events is to use a timeline. Many civilizations choose significant events in their religious or cultural history to determine measurement of time. One division of time which is familiar to people is divided into two periods: B.C. and A.D.. This is based on a Christian event. B.C. means “before Christ; A.D. means anno Domini, or “in the year of the Lord.” This calendar is based on a Christian viewpoint. However, as there are many other calendars, there are many other divisions. Another example of how time is divided is B.C.E. (before the common era) and C.E. (common era).

Practice1. Label the following dates: 500A.D., 1000B.C., 1000A.D., 500B.C.2. Which date is the earliest? __________. The most recent? _______3. How much time passed between 1000B.C. and 500A.D.? _______

Practice1. What century were you born in? ________2. If Confucius was born in 551B.C., what century was that? _______3. Using the chart, what years are included in the tenth century? ________4. When does the 21st century begin? ________

Centuries This chart divides time into centuries, which are periods of 100 years. The 100 years from one through 100 are called the first century. The year 25 comes between one and 100 and is part of the first century. The years 101 to 200 are called the second century. If an event happened in 150, we say it happened in the second century. The sequence of years continues to the present.

Timelinethe best was to work with timeline is to imagine a number line. Just think of a timeline as using positive and neg-ative numbers. On the timeline that we will be working with, numbers to the left of zero (B.C.) work like negative numbers; to the right (A.D.), like positive numbers.
