Tourism and HoReCa in Slovenia | December 2015 3
1. General information on Slovenia
Slovenia is the only country in Europe that combines the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Pannonian
Plain and the Karst. The changing landscape is constantly surprising. You can have one eye on the
sea, then look in the other direction and be surrounded by high mountains. Heading up into the
forests, you can see the green plains below you. From upland meadows your view stretches into
river gorges. This proximity of opposites and contrasts is a hallmark of the country.
1.1. Some facts and figures
Total area: 20.273 sq km
Border countries: Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy
Coastline: 4,6 km
Climate & terrain: Mediterranean climate on the coast, continental climate with mild to hot
summers and cold winters in the plateaus and valleys to the east. Short coastal
strip on the Adriatic, an alpine mountain region adjacent to Italy and Austria,
mixed mountains and valleys with numerous rivers to the east.
Population: 2.061.085 (January 2014)
1.2. Economic situation
In 2014, the Slovenian economy rebounded strongly. After a cumulative decline of more than 9%
between 2008 and 2013, real GDP is estimated to have grown by 2.6% in 2014. Growth has been
predominantly export-driven but domestic demand has also begun to recover. The recovery in
investment expenditure has been driven mainly by infrastructure construction financed through
EU funds, while private sector investment remains subdued. Real GDP is expected to grow by 2.1%
on average in 2015-16. The unemployment rate remains below the EU average, falling to 9.8% in
2014 and is expected to decline further. Public debt is forecast to stand at 83% of GDP in 2015,
gradually increasing in the medium term.

2. Tourism in Slovenia
According to 'Spirit Slovenia Public Agency' Slovenia is clearly positioned as a green (eco-oriented)
and diverse “boutique” Central European well-being tourism destination at the crossroads of the
Mediterranean, the Alps and the Pannonia Plain with a recognisable and successful tourist brand
featuring a strong emotional charge that communicates quality and an individual experience for
each guest in Slovenia.
4
Development activities are geared towards the development of sustainable or green tourism that
forms a part of the very core of the ‘I FEEL SLOVENIA’ brand. Green, active, healthy is the theme
that Slovenia uses to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
2.1. Statistical data of tourist traffic
In 2014, 3,5 million tourist arrivals and 9,6 million overnight stays were recorded in Slovenia. Foreign
tourists generated 6 million overnight stays, the highest number ever recorded. The number of
arrivals and overnight stays of domestic tourists was the lowest in the last seven years. Foreign
tourists generated 64% of all tourist overnight stays in Slovenia. Key European markets, from which
the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded, were Italy (16% of all foreign
overnight stays), Austria (12%), Germany (11%), the Russian Federation, the Netherlands and Croatia
(5% each). Tourists from non-European countries contributed 12% of all foreign overnight stays.
On average, in 2014 domestic tourists stayed in tourist accommodations 3,1 nights and foreign
tourists 2,5 nights.
In 2014, the highest number of overnight stays was generated by health resort municipalities (32%);
they were followed by mountain resort municipalities with a 23% share and seaside resort
municipalities with a 22% share, while the Municipality of Ljubljana recorded an 11% share in the
number of overnight stays generated. With regard to the year 2013, the highest growth in the
number of overnight stays was recorded in Ljubljana (+7%).

In Slovenia, tourism provides a great opportunity. Together with its indirect impacts, tourism
contributes 13% of total GDP (WTTC, 2014), and with its 40% export it is the largest exporter of
services providing more than 12% of all jobs (indirectly and directly connected with tourism).

2.2. Tourism accommodation
Hotels and motels:
The finest accommodation in Slovenia is offered by hotels. You can choose between hotels of all
ratings, including some with five stars. Many hotels have conference facilities, and conference
tourism is now booming. There are motels along the motorways and busier roads.
Hotels in Slovenia are modern and well-kept, and offer varying levels of comfort, facilities and
services in keeping with their international rating of one to five stars. Three- and four-star ratings
are the most common, but there are more than ten five-star hotels. In recent years four- and five-
star hotels have been able to obtain 'superior' status.
The first five-star hotel to obtain superior status was the Kempinski Palace in Portorož:
http://www.kempinski.com/en/istria/palace-portoroz/welcome/. According to inspectors this is
not merely the best hotel in Slovenia, but the best on the entire Adriatic coast between Venice and
Dubrovnik.
Private rooms, apartments and inns:
Staying in private rooms and inns is a good opportunity to get to know the local customs,
attractions and cuisine.
There is a wide range of private rooms and apartments in Slovenia. The majority are rated at two
or three stars, and offer relatively reasonable prices. Prices per person range from €15 to €50 a
night. In some areas the local authorities prescribed a surcharge for single nights. Irrespective of
private rooms generally being cheaper than hotels, apartment pricing is particularly suited to
families or groups of at least four people.
Private rooms are often part of the house where the landlord lives; sometimes they have separate
entrances or are completely independent. Many private rooms offer breakfast.
Holiday homes can be rented, particularly in holiday resorts. The resorts also have apartments and
bungalows available. Resort villages at holiday resorts may be attached to large hotels or natural
health resorts, and offer the same services to those staying at the resort village that those staying
at the hotel or natural health resort enjoy.
Slovenia’s inns offer accommodation, and good food, often in the best local style. Many are family-
owned. Some pensions also offer excellent cuisine. The majority of Slovenia’s pensions and inns
are rated at two or three stars. They all have parking.
Camping sites:
Campsites in Slovenia can be found in the outskirts of towns, and in the green countryside. Many
are situated along rivers and lakes or by the sea, and are ideal for lovers of water sports and
angling. There are also plenty of hiking and biking trails in their vicinity, while many campsites
have children’s play areas and all manner of sports facilities.
Tourism and HoReCa in Slovenia | December 2015 7
For those travelling with camper vans Slovenia has several dedicated sites with all the requisite
facilities. If you are travelling in a part of the country where there are no such sites, you are
welcome to stop at campsites or larger rest areas along the main roads. In the countryside, some
tourist farms have sites for camper vans.
Tourist farms:
There are more than 400 tourist farms in Slovenia where you can stay. A real attraction are the
ecological tourist farms, which offer a healthy living environment and certified organic food.
Many tourist farms are located in wine regions, from where you can pick up one of Slovenia’s wine
trails, and taste and buy some excellent local wines.
Hostels:
The number of hostels in the country has increased significantly in recent years, and their guests
are not only those under 30 years of age. Many Slovenian hostels are members of the international
association Hostelling International, which offers attractive discounts to its members. During the
summer, when school is not in session, some student residence halls are also open to tourists.
Mountain lodges and cabins:
Slovenia has about 170 mountain lodges and cabins. Clean and orderly, but sparsely furnished,
hikers are always welcome here during bad weather or darkness, even when they are full. A number
of lodges are open all year round.
2.3. The 2016 vision
According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology has been charged with the
drafting of the proposal for the Slovene Tourism Strategy, in 2016, tourism in Slovenia will be
based on sustainable development and will, as a very successful industry of the national economy,
importantly contribute to the country's social welfare and reputation in the world.
8
European Projects
The EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) European project, the SlowTourism project
(www.slow-tourism.net) and the T-lab project http://www.tourism-lab.eu/ are European projects
positioning Slovenia as a tourist destination with an innovative tourism offer that follows the
guidelines of sustainable development.
Slovenian Tourist Board
The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) is the national umbrella tourist board, whose purpose is to plan
and carry out the promotion of the country as a tourist destination, primarily in foreign markets.
Tourist events
Representatives of tourism industry and administration are invited every year to the tourist events
being held in Slovenia:
• SIW – Slovenian Incoming Workshop: The most important tourist event in Slovenia. Every
year more than 250 representatives from Slovenian tourism companies meet with
representatives from foreign companies (approx. 3.500 business meetings at SIW).
• CONVENTA – The Southeast European trade show for meetings, events & incentives. In
January 2015, more than 120 suppliers from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Republic
of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and parts of Austria and
Italy were present at Conventa - www.conventa.si/
• ALPE – ADRIA: Tourism and leisure show is the leading tourism event in the Alps–Adriatic
region - www.alpeadria-tourismshow.com
3. HoReCa in Slovenia
The Horeca sector plays an important role in the Slovenian economy, employing 3,8% of the whole
workforce. There is a lot of seasonal work, with a very high share of temporary and student
workers. The human factor is crucial for the success of this industry, so substantial efforts have
been made for the last few years to improve education and skills in the sector and to promote
jobs. The sector is well covered by collective agreements and social dialogue occurs at national,
sectoral and company level.
Slovenian cuisine
Slovenia has been re-discovering its cuisine, while absorbing trends and innovations from Europe
and around the world. This is especially evident from the diverse regional menus offered by various
characteristic restaurants, the 'gostilne', which are Slovenia’s most identifiable culinary landmark
and are typically based on family traditions.
Tourism and HoReCa in Slovenia | December 2015 9
Wallnut roll ('potica') –a tipical Slovenian pastry
Slovenian wines
Slovenia lies on the southern slopes of the Alps and touches the Mediterranean, so it enjoys the
best of both worlds, as well as climatic uncertainties from both North and South. However, the
tradition of wine production is very long, going back at least to the time of the Roman Empire.
This, together with the natural conditions mentioned above, provides a very rich diversity of taste,
smell and colour in the different wines.
Slovenia has three wine-producing regions: Primorska, Posavje, and Podravje. Each is divided into
many wine-making districts, each having a selection of fine wines.
The wine routes are true pilgrimage destinations.
Restaurants:
Slovenia offers an exceptionally wide range of restaurants that satisfy the most demanding guests.
Tasty food is available at very affordable prices. The culinary enjoyment of Slovenian dishes and
high-quality Slovenian wines are just part of what is offered. You can also dine out in style at
restaurants offering Italian, Serbian, French, international and various Asian cuisines.

4. Opportunities for Flemish companies
Opportunities for Flemish companies include:
- Food & drinks:
frozen food (pastries, meat products, fruit and vegetable), food ingredients and nutrition
supplements, specialty beers, ready-made meals.
- Furniture, carpets, kitchen equipment
Despite of a strong position of Gorenje (www.gorenje.com, one of the leading European
home appliance manufacturers) on the Slovenian market, there is still significant demand
for established international trademarks.
- Software,
for example for cash registers (at the beginning of this year the Slovenian government
approved the action plan for the introduction of certified cash registers)
- Wellness and swimming pool equipment
Slovenia is a small market (2 mln inhabitants) but its relatively high purchasing power per
capita makes it an interesting market for foreign companies. Despite of the campaign 'Buy
Slovenian', encouraging consumers to buy Slovenian-made products, many people still think
that foreign-made products are more 'fancy' and sometimes mistakenly believe that they
are of better quality. They are also willing to pay a higher price for imported goods.
5. Competitors
A relatively small number of local producers (mostly SME's) struggle to compete with foreign
suppliers that sell either directly to end users or through numerous importers that are active on
the market.
You can find more information on local and foreign competitors in item 7.
6. Accessing the market
The best way to enter the Slovenian market is to find an established importer or distributor, a
person who knows the market, maintains good relations with existing customers and keeps well-
informed in the business world.
Flanders Investment & Trade can help you find out about a company's solvency and reputation
and also help you find an importer or distributor.
