Challenges in managing servers
• Upgrading & patching servers are risky, time-consuming and error-prone
• Inconsistent server configuration results in reduced application quality, frequent outages, extended down-time, and failed IT audits and compliance
• Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity support requires overbuilding with dedicated purpose servers
13© 2007 Citrix Systems, Inc. — All rights reserved
• Simplifies & speedsPS management and migrations
• Streams vDisk imagesto diskless, bare-metal servers
• Saves datacenterstorage, power and administrative time.
• Dynamic provisioning maximizesserver utilization

Provisioning Server Benefits
• Powers a Dynamic datacenter• stateless server hardware and server workloads with the
ability to efficiently combine them on demand
• Facilitates delivery of ANY workload • (Windows or Linux) to ANY server (physical or virtual)
• Provides “green” deployment of diskless servers
• Enables a single managed disk image streamed to multiple servers

How the Provisioning Server Works – Step 1
Administration ProcessTake snapshot of physical drives and store them as “virtual disks” (vDisks) in an image repository (NAS or SAN)
Sector By Sector Map of D1 to VD1
Auto discover and load available computers into database by MAC address
Computers can have different NICs, chipsets, media cards
Store personality by MAC address
Administrator assigns vDisk image to computer based on MAC address
26© 2007 Citrix Systems, Inc.—All rights reserved, Citrix Company Confidential
How the Provisioning Server Works– Step 2
Runtime ExecutionDuring boot phase, PC boots from network image rather than physical image
DHCP and TFTPOther Methods – e.g. Static IP
The Streaming Service authenticates, locates and delivers the OS and application stack from repository.
Supports Most Popular OSWindows, Linux, VM
Standard And Private Image Modes

Two Types of vDisks
• Standard Image Mode• One vDisk to many target devices• Read only
• Private Image Mode• One vDisk to one target device• Read/Write access

Standard Image Mode
A single vDisk is streamed to many target devices.Any session changes are not written back to the base vDisk.
On reboot, a “clean” image is streamed down to the target devices.

Private Image Mode
A single image is streamed on boot to the target device.User installs software or updates which are written back to the vDisk real-time.The target device is shut down.On next boot, settings are persisted.

Isolation
How do I get unique applications to each user or target device?
With the addition of application streaming…And through isolation…Applications can be streamed “on- demand” to each target device…
Providing a unique application stack per target device.

Software Streaming Address Shortcomings
• Bare-metal Provisioning • Servers are stateless; no hard-disk drive required. OS/application image is
streamed simultaneously to all servers in a silo upon boot without hogging bandwidth. Significant advantages in upgrades of CPS or Windows Server OS.
• Streamlined Image Management• Only one virtual OS/application image is required per silo. Patching and
updating is simplified. Testing, rollout, and – if necessary – rollback are completed effectively and quickly. Server-build consistency is assured.
• On-Demand Repurposing of Servers• Any server in the farm can be reprovision with a new/different OS/application
image on reboot. Whole silos can be re-purposed to perform different functions.
• Disaster Recovery Assurance• All of the virtual images in a server farm can be backed-up and stored at a
remote location. No prior provisioning of a remote location will be necessary.
