Born in Scotland


His father was fired as a weaver.

Family migrated to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1848.


Was a messenger boy at Western Union,an opportunity to move up


Do more than was expected,so he’d get notice by his bosses.


Memorizing names, addresses and facesof people whom frequent deliveries.

So he could cut delivery times.


Learned by himself to be a telegraph operator


He studied the railroad’s operation in depth.

Became so knowledgeable to offer innovation suggestions.

Introduced innovation for steel manufacturingas key foundation to build America


In 1872, he learned new process from UK to make steel better of strength and flexibility.

Steel became a key material for building structure.


Built the first steel millNamed it Edgar Thomson Works,

after the president of Pennsylvania Railroad


No micromanage

His job was to implement a progressive system,

install worthy employees and chart an accurate course.


But always be there when bidding,unforseen circumstances could come up.
