Wilderness SafarisSKELETON COAST, NAMIBIA Established Since 1983

The newest offering in Wilderness Safaris’ collection of immersive

ecotourism destinations, the remote and rugged Hoanib Skeleton

Coast Camp is an exclusive seven-tent enclave, set within a broad

coastal river valley in Namibia’s starkly beautiful Kaokoveld Desert.

DAY 1 Take an afternoon game drive along the riverbed, enjoying

scenic sundowners on the way. The wildlife of the area has adapted

superbly to the arid environs; one of the greatest concentrations of

desert-adapted elephant can be found here, along with Hartmann’s

zebra, giraffe, and gemsbok and springbok antelope. In the evening,

enjoy a fascinating discussion with lion researchers.

DAY 2 A scenic Skeleton Coast flight to Möwe Bay and back show-

cases this dramatic landscape from the air. In between, take in the

huge Cape fur seal colony on the

desolate coast, along with black-

backed jackal and the elusive

brown hyena.

DAY 3 Enjoy game drives to

Mudorib Spring and downstream

to the Hoanib Floodplains in

search of elephant, gemsbok and

giraffe—and perhaps even lion.

Despite rapid modernization, India re-tains a fascinating culture and allure unlike that of any other country. Within its borders lie sweeping deserts and dense forests, opulent palace hotels and bustling cities, and expressions of deep colonial influences mixed with ancient traditions and modern society. Here, Mr. Harper shares his thoughts on why India remains a compelling visit for both first-time and experienced visitors alike.

Q How has India changed since your first visit?

India has changed out of all recognition since I first visited the country in 1981. Back then, India was in a time warp, brought about by Nehru’s socialist ex-periment: there were few modern hotels, few cars and the main domestic airline was state owned. Even in Rajasthan

there were few tourists, and a man at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, which was then falling to pieces and chiefly in-habited by hundreds of peacocks, claimed that I was the first westerner he had met since Independence in 1947. For the visi-tor in 1981, India was less comfortable, but much more exotic than it is today. You found yourself immersed in the cul-ture of immemorial India, whether you wanted to be or not. And the giants of the recent political past, Gandhi and Nehru, then felt close enough to touch. India continues to modernize rapidly and in the major cities its citizens are addicted to mobile technology, just like people everywhere else. The spread of comfort-able hotels and the quality of the resorts in India continues to increase—the big difference is that these are now aimed at the domestic as much as the interna-tional market.

ABOVE: The Taj Mahal, resplendent and rosy-hued at dawn OPPOSITE: Standing on the banks of the Ganges, the ancient city of Varanasi is considered the spiritual capital of India.

A Study in Contrasts:

INDIAQ&A With Mr. Harper

Page 18: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine: Oct/Nov/Dec 2014

What surprises most first-time visitors to the country?India, apart from the more salubrious parts of New Delhi, is not for the faint-hearted. The country has extraordinary beauty, but India is—and probably always will be—a paradox. India can be dusty and cacophonous, but it also produces moments of sublimity more reliably than anywhere else.

What advice do you have for travelers making their first visit?Don’t try to do too much. India doesn’t like to be hurried. Most first-time visitors usually visit only Uttar Pradesh (Delhi), Maharastra (Mumbai) and Rajasthan, which is still the place that first-time visi-tors find most compelling. And with the help of a good guide, you can escape the tourist crowds. Be sure to go at the right time of year, from October to March. The best months in northern India are November and February. From mid-March until the monsoon, it is infernally hot. Read about India’s culture, history and food in advance—it will make your trip far more rewarding. And do heed the health warnings and take the appropriate preventative measures. Otherwise it is extremely easy to get sick.

What about India compels travelers to return? Its extraordinarily complex and ancient culture—India is a world unto itself. The grandeur of the architecture. The utterly delicious food, when you have acquired a taste for it. The attractiveness of the people: Every day you see young men and women of heart-stopping beauty. The scent of the earth and the flowers after the rains. The majesty of the landscape, especially that of the Himalayas. The sense that India is infinite, the feeling that you could spend a hundred lifetimes there and still only scratch the surface. The intelligence, charm and humor of the Indians themselves.

And what makes you want to return for another visit?I will always want to return to the Himalayas, which are the most beautiful mountains in the world. Walking in the foothills of 25,500-foot Nanda Devi when the crimson rhododendrons are in full bloom is an almost psychedelic experi-ence. So are the colors of the men’s tur-bans and women’s dresses in Rajasthan. As Diana Vreeland famously observed, “Shocking pink is the navy blue of India.” I love the food; I love the people; I love the intensity of life in India.

Name three places any visitor to India must see.Well, everyone has to see the Taj Mahal, even though it is crowded and Agra is not a particularly nice place. I’ve always loved Udaipur. The Lake Palace is a travel cliché, but there’s a reason: it’s stunning. If you want to understand Indian culture, you have to learn a little about Hinduism and the place to do that is Varanasi on the Ganges. But over the years, I have come to love the mountains best: the foothills of Kanchenjunga in the east; Himachal and Uttarakhand in the central Indian Himalayas; and Ladakh, right up on the border of Tibet.

With 1.2 billion people, India is the world’s second most-populated country. Do you have suggestions for getting off the beaten path? The cities are incredibly crowded, and take some getting used to. If you want to experience extreme culture shock, then check into a top hotel in New Delhi and spend your afternoon by the pool. Then, as it begins to get dark, ask your guide to take to you to Chandni Chowk, the main market, in Old Delhi. Much of rural India, with the exception of Bihar, is quite serene—as are the forested ar-eas in the center of the country, where the main tiger reserves like Kanha and Bandhavgarh are to be found. And then there are the Himalayas.

What makes Indian culture distinctive?India is bounded on two sides by the sea and in the north by the world’s highest mountains. And it is a very ancient coun-try, which over millennia has developed a culture that is unlike any other. It has a vast population and there is a sense in India, as there is in China, that the rest of the world is in some ways irrel-evant. India has its own mythology, the Mahabharata, and its own holy books, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, and it is self-sufficient.

Geographically, India is the seventh-largest country in the world. How do you recommend travelers get from one region to another? Not by road! Indian roads are appalling and extremely dangerous. The standard of driving is atrocious. I only travel by car when there is no alternative. The trains are safe and First Class AC is comfortable and reasonably clean. But don’t expect the TGV or the Shinkansen. The planes, however, are much improved, as are the airports.

You observed that India’s palace hotels are living links to the era of the maharajahs (see May 2012 Hideaway Report). What are other influences of the country’s history on contemporary India? The British were in India for 200 years, so their influence did not vanish overnight. It is waning of course, and many of the old British buildings, with the exception of Lutyens New Delhi, are falling down. For an Ozymandias moment, “Look on my works ye mighty and despair,” visit the old British Residency in Hyderabad, which is like a magnificent neo-classical stately home—except that today it is tumbledown and full of bats. But India

is still united by the English language, and also a functioning democracy. And Indians remain obsessed by the game of cricket. You’ll still find tour guides who can quote great tracts of Shakespeare, and the smart Indian private schools reflect a Britain that has long since van-ished from Europe.

India’s many festivals offer distinct opportunities to experience Indian culture and traditions. Do you have any memorable experiences from these celebrations? How can travelers participate? The most famous festival is probably the Pushkar camel fair in Rajasthan, which is within easy reach of Jaipur. Diwali, the festival of lights, is the time to be in Varanasi, where pilgrims launch thou-sands of paper boats onto the river at nightfall, each carrying a single candle. Holi, the spring festival of colors is best avoided, as you tend to get drenched in brightly colored water if you are not careful! I particularly enjoy the festivals in the Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. A return visit is definitely overdue.

What local dishes do you recommend?Indian food is place specific. In the north the staple is wheat, so breads of various kinds, naan, chapattis and so forth. In the south, where it rains more consistently, the staple is rice. The people in the north eat meat, though not beef, whereas else-where they are chiefly vegetarians. On the west coast, in Mumbai and farther south in Goa, there is an abundance of seafood so menus feature fish and prawns. But everywhere in India people prefer food that is highly spiced and they find Western cuisine to be bland and boring.

Will visitors to India’s tiger reserves feel inspired as Rudyard Kipling was?Maybe not. It is hard to visit India’s national parks without realizing how precarious they are, how vulnerable to the exponential increase in the human population. They are much smaller than those in Africa, and the tiger, which re-quires a large amount of space, is chronically endangered. It probably will not survive in the wild much longer, but tourism is one of the few things that might save it, so go before it is too late.

Do you have any advice about safety for visitors? If you are traveling with the assistance of a company like Andrew Harper and staying in the best hotels, there are very few security issues. I have never felt unsafe in India. The curse of India is communal violence, chiefly between Hindus and Muslims. But foreigners are exempt from that. The chief danger in India is the deplorable standard of driving by Indian truck drivers. If you want to stay safe, fly whenever possible.

The Best of Paradise

28 | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014 ANDREWHARPER.COM

Crystalline waters, tropical breezes, endless beaches, and rum by the barrelful—the Caribbean is paradise found.

“W here else in the world can you wake up to a symphony of birds, a sunrise that invites you to a day of relaxation, and warm, genuine

people who make it their mission to make your vacation a memory of a lifetime? Only in the Caribbean,” says Wilbert Mason, general manager of Peter Island Resort & Spa.

The Caribbean’s 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays represent 28 countries. Best known for its clear-blue waters, temperate weather and white-sand beaches, it may very well be the people of the Caribbean that make these island destinations so special. “I think what really sets the

Caribbean apart is the fun-loving, unique melting pot of

cultures that now define the [region],” says Lily Carr, sales

manager at Little Dix Bay. “It’s created the warm, hospitable

locals that call these islands their home year round.”

MaryAnne DeMatteo, director of sales and marketing at

Antigua’s Jumby Bay, agrees. “Each island that makes up the

Caribbean has its own history, which has led to the evolution

of different customs, languages, delicacies and music,” she

says. “Nowhere else in the world can one find such a unique

mixture of cultures and welcoming individuals.”

Page 31: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine: Oct/Nov/Dec 2014

“Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...”

A private beach at Jumby Bay in Antigua eases into the Caribbean’s remarkably blue waters.

This best-of-the-Caribbean roundup includes seven islands and resorts most booked by the Andrew Harper Travel Office in 2013–14. Mason, Carr and DeMatteo, along with several other in-the-know islanders, give their suggestions for what to do, what to see, what to eat and what to drink in order to truly experience all that the Caribbean has to offer .

“For me, there is nowhere else like the Caribbean,” says Mason. “This is where a true slice of paradise awaits you.”

A couple walks along the beach at Caneel Bay in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Like many of the surrounding islands, St. John is only accessible by boat.

Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands)

THE DRAW: A small, friendly island that’s home to The Baths, BVI’s famous geological landmark.

The population of Virgin Gorda is so small that the island still doesn’t have a single traffic light. Combine the small population, the small size of only eight square miles and the unparalleled relaxed charm, and it’s easy to see

why cocktails at sunset might be about the only thing to get in a hurry for.

DON’T MISS: “Leverick Bay’s Jumbies Bar is a must. Every Friday night they throw a full-moon party with live calypso music and performances by Moko Jumbie dancers,” says Carr.

Top 10 Caribbean Beaches n Little Bay (Anguilla): Accessible only by boat

or climbing down the high cliffs that surround the bay, this is Anguilla’s most secluded beach.

nMudjin Harbour (Turks & Caicos): A hidden gem on Middle Caicos, Mudjin Harbor is blessed with turquoise waters, powdery beaches and no crowds.

nGreat Dog Island (BVI): A small, uninhabited island just 10 minutes from Virgin Gorda, this is “the perfect spot to go if you want to come home without any tan lines,” says Carr.

nMaundays Bay (Anguilla): This mile-long stretch of pearly white sand is an idyllic setting for beach walking. Clear, shallow water makes it perfect for swimming, as well.

nPigeon Point (Antigua): The main public beach on Antigua’s south coast, Pigeon Point is popular with families and locals, and is the island’s best beach for people watching.

nGrace Bay (Turks & Caicos): “World-famous Grace Bay is the beach to visit if you want to see and be seen,” says Charrish Ferguson, marketing and design coordinator at Grace Bay Club, of Provo’s 12-mile stretch of white sand.

nTrunk Bay (St. John/USVI): Often called the Caribbean’s most pristine beach, Trunk Bay’s warm waters, coral sands and 225-yard-long snorkeling trail make it a favorite among tourists.

nHarrismith Beach (Barbados): Act out your favorite scenes from “Castaway” on this remote stretch of beach in the Parish of St. Philip.

nHalfmoon Bay (Antigua): Not entirely “undiscovered,” this pristine curve of pinkish-white sand is very often deserted.

nBottom Bay (Barbados): Partially enclosed by tall coral cliffs, this beach is the perfect setting for an ocean-side picnic. Picturesque as it is, this beach is not ideal for swimming due to strong waves.

31ANDREW HARPER TRAVEL OFFICE (800) 375-4685 [email protected] |

Peter Island (British Virgin Islands)

THE DRAW: 1,800 acres of unspoiled tropical island and five pristine beaches.

“The British Virgin Islands is the sailing capital of the Caribbean, so whether it’s a sunset sail, a snorkel or scuba excursion or deep-sea fishing, time out on the water is a must,” says Mason.

DON’T MISS: Attending full-moon parties and hanging out at the bars on Cane Garden—a great way of getting the local vibes, adds Mason.

St. John (U.S. Virgin Islands)

THE DRAW: Unpretentious, low-key and home to one of the Caribbean’s most pristine beaches.

The least developed of the USVI, two-thirds of St. John’s tropical hills are protected as national parkland. “The timelessness of St. John brings visitors back to a gentler era,” says Jessica Sarkin, sales manager at

Caneel Bay Resort. “The unspoiled land and waters that surround [the island] create a stunning experience.”

DON’T MISS: Visiting the ruins of the Annaberg Sugar Plantation.

AntiguaTHE DRAW: A winding coastline with a different beach for every day of the year. (Yes, that’s 365.)

“Antigua is still relatively untouched,” says Stephanie Mack, sales and marketing executive with Hermitage Bay. “It’s a great place to escape when all you want is rest and relaxation.”

Here, like the rest of the Caribbean, water sports reign supreme, with deep-sea fishing, kite-surfing, and sailing leading the pack. For picturesque sunset views, Mack suggests visiting Shirley Heights

on Sundays, when visitors can enjoy a sunset barbecue accompanied by rum punch and a steel band. For more local flavor, experience the island’s vibrant music and dance scene during

the Antiguan Carnival, which takes place at the end of the summer season.

DON’T MISS: Adventure Antigua’s Xtreme Tour, which takes guests swimming with wild stingrays, snorkeling at the Pillars of Hercules and on a cruise through Nelson’s

Dockyard for a quick history of the island’s former English military base.

6 Caribbean Foods to Savor n Antigua Black

Pineapple: Known simply as Antigua Black, it’s arguably the world’s sweetest pineapple. But don’t expect a darker-hued fruit; the flesh of this pineapple is still golden in color.

n Goat Water: This hearty Antiguan goat stew seasoned with clove and cinnamon is a local favorite.

n Anegada Lobster: These delicately sweet crustaceans fill the waters surrounding the island of Anegada in the British Virgin Islands, and are caught and delivered daily to restaurants and resorts throughout the BVI.

n Conch: Considered a local delicacy, conch is the seafood of choice in Turks & Caicos, which is home to the world’s only conch farm. Its rich island history makes it a must-try food.

n Cou-Cou and Flying Fish: Barbados’ national dish, composed of corn meal (cooked to a polenta-like consistency), okra, flying fish and an aromatic tomato sauce.

n Pigeon Peas and Rice: Anguilla’s national dish, this simple meal combines pigeon peas (similar to black-eyed peas), rice, butter, spices, lime juice and a dash of hot sauce.

Dishes made with pigeon peas and rice are staples in Anguilla and other Caribbean locales, where the legumes are easily cultivated.

4

Page 35: Andrew Harper Traveler Magazine: Oct/Nov/Dec 2014

n Rum Punch: King of the Caribbean cocktails, this fruity drink is a mixture of juices, sugar, bitters, nutmeg and dark rum. For a more authentic experience, try it mixed with a locally distilled spirit.

n Painkiller: Originating in the BVI’s Soggy Dollar Bar, and the official libation of the Virgin Islands, this cocktail is a tantalizing blend of Pusser’s rum, pineapple and orange juices, cream of coconut and nutmeg.

33ANDREW HARPER TRAVEL OFFICE (800) 375-4685 [email protected] |

AnguillaTHE DRAW: Thirty-three white-sand beaches encircling the intimate 17-by-3-mile island.

To fully appreciate this warm, friendly and festive place, “get into the groove of island life as soon as you ar-rive, and appreciate the slower pace while you’re here,” says Cardigan Connor, director of spa and recreation at Cap Juluca. His recommendation for the perfect end to a day of snorkeling, traditional Anguillan sailboat

racing or deep-sea fishing will find you at one of two places—musician Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve or The Pumphouse, both well-known musical destinations and the go-to beach bars on the island.

DON’T MISS: Anguilla’s annual Summer Festival, featuring yacht races, calypso music, fairs and parties.

Cap Juluca provides catamarans and kayaks

“Barbados is spiritually alive, it vibrates with enlightenment and vitality,” says Ruth Phillips with the Barbados Tourism Authority. “You will hear it in our music, in the laughter of [our] people.” To acquaint yourself with the lay of the land, take a 4X4 Jeep through the

unbeaten tracks of the island. Make time to visit some of the country’s 12,000 rum shops, and then dance the night away to live music at St. Lawrence Gap. Phillips recommends reserving Friday nights for the weekly fish fry at Oistins Bay Garden. Attracting a mix of both locals and

The extensive reefs around the Turks & Caicos Islands are inhabited by a fantastic array of underwater life.

36 | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014 ANDREWHARPER.COM

Turks & CaicosTHE DRAW: “Water so blue it blows me away every time I see it,” says

Beverly Plachta, manager at The Meridian Club.

The Turks & Caicos Islands consist of six inhabited islands, each with a unique lifestyle. “In Providenciales (Provo) you can experience city life; in Grand Turk you can be a historian; in South Caicos you can be a fisherman; in

Salt Cay you can escape from it all; and in North and Middle Caicos, you can live the life of a farmer,” says Charrish Ferguson, marketing and design coordinator at Grace Bay Club. Not to be outdone by the islands,

however, the surrounding crystal-blue waters are home to the world’s third largest barrier reef system and miles of underwater canyons, providing one of the Caribbean’s most exceptional diving locations.

DON’T MISS: Thursday’s weekly fish fry, where local restaurants serve traditional island cuisine at a beachside park. “The evening is filled with traditional music and dancing, and is the perfect opportunity to taste a

bit of island life,” says Ferguson. She also recommends taking part in a junkanoo, an island festival with energetic drums, elaborate costumes and lots of dancing.

BARRIER REEF: Home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef system and miles of 6,000-foot vertical drop-offs, Turks & Caicos is a must-visit destination for snorkeling and wall-diving enthusiasts.

n MONTSERRAT/SOUFRIÈRE HILLS VOLCANO: A helicopter tour of Montserrat provides a spectacular view over the Soufrière Hills volcano, which has been active since a catastrophic eruption in 1995. “Watching the landscape change from the lively, colorful city of St. John’s to the desolate devastation of Plymouth, Montserrat’s former capital city, is a surreal experience,” says Mack.

n HARRISON’S CAVE: Excavated by the Barbadian government, visitors are now able to take an electric tram down into the extensive cave system to view stunning coral formations and waterfalls.

n THE BATHS NATIONAL PARK: The most famous geological landmark in the BVIs, The Baths National Park is situated on the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda. “It features unique volcanic boulders that stretch along the coastline to create spectacular salt-water grottoes and pools that you can hike around and snorkel in,” says Carr.

Giant volcanic boulders created the pools and grottoes that make up The Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands.

S pecial places around the world have a palpable energy to them—an inimitable aura of importance and significance that is at once undeniable and, yet, difficult to put into words. Certain places feel—and simply are—deeply and

unquestionably sacred. It’s no surprise that many of these sacred spaces are places of worship. What’s less intuitive is that in some remarkable spots, we can almost physically feel their sacredness whether or not we believe in the religion which inspired their creation.

Sacred spaces all over the world beckon travelers from afar who often travel thousands of miles specifically to experience such wonders. We’ve selected three vastly different regions to highlight in North America, Europe and Asia. Upon visiting, take your time and contemplate what’s around you.

The Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest, was built in 1692 around a sacred cave and has become the most prominent cultural icon of Bhutan.

BhutanThe Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan issues only about 10,000 visas per year, and it remains miraculously unspoiled. Everywhere, the influence of Tibetan Buddhism makes itself apparent: brightly colored prayer flags flutter in the breeze, and golden-roofed dzongs (fortified mon-asteries) dominate the idyllic scenery.

In such a country the sacred can be found all over, but the dzongs are truly unique. The most famous is the Tiger’s Nest, dramatically perched on a cliff face some 3,000 feet above the valley floor. An Andrew Harper staff member recently visited, and she relates how seeing the dzong, surrounded by clouds and mist, was such a moving experience that tears tumbled down her cheeks as she entered. Under the direction of an astrologer she met at one of our recommended proper-ties in Bhutan, Amankora in Paro, she lit 100 butter candles at the monastery.

Amankora also arranged for her and some other guests to visit a Buddhist temple near its property in Bumthang. Inside, they discovered monks perform-ing a ceremony, playing traditional instruments and lighting incense. Each guest went up individually and received a blessing, sealed with a white scarf draped around their necks. She related to us how moving and spiritual it felt, even though she’s not Buddhist herself.

Itineraries in Bhutan, which typically incorporate three to five of the Aman-kora lodges, include experiences like these each day. Visit schools to watch young monks practicing sacred musical instruments; explore holy ruins set amid fragrant mountainside pine forests; and, depending on the time of year, take part in a colorful religious festival highlighted by traditional dances and processions. Such experiences leave deep impressions on the traveler, and a journey through Bhutan never fails to be unforgettable. Indeed, for some, it’s life-changing.

FranceNowadays most tourists travel to France to partake of its secular delights, but the country is rich in sacred spaces as well. Gothic architecture originated in France in the 12th century, and magnificent gothic churches can be found across the country. One of the most spectacular is Sainte Chapelle in Paris, famous for its glorious walls of stained glass barely interrupted by narrow stone tracery. Crowds rob the space of atmosphere dur-ing regular visiting hours, but during one of the classical music concerts (best on a summer evening, before the sun sets), Sainte Chapelle’s magic returns in full force. The equally well-preserved stained glass windows in Chartres Cathedral, along with its intricate stonework, also draw crowds. Still, it feels as though you’ve traveled through time if you attend the high Latin mass on Sunday, or the half-hour early evening vespers service

held daily (except Saturday). In Amiens, a city which played a pivotal role in World War I, the cathedral boasts the largest medieval interior in Europe. In Reims, the soaring, beautifully restored cathe-dral—heavily damaged during World War I—has its own unique aura: Starting in the 10th century, every king of France—with only two exceptions—was crowned in Reims Cathedral.

Of course, not every sacred site in France is gothic, or even a church. Some of the most moving and sacred-feeling spaces in the country are associated with the D-Day invasion of Normandy. The beaches there, where so many sol-diers died in World War II, are hallowed ground. And visiting the American Cem-etery, where thousands of young men lie beneath perfect rows of white crosses and Stars of David, makes powerfully plain the sacrifice required to liberate France during the war.

New MexicoSome of the United States’ oldest sacred spaces can be found—not on the East Coast, as one might expect—but in New Mexico. Santa Fe is home to the oldest church in the country, the adobe San Miguel Mission, dating from the early 17th century. This modest but moving building stands just down the block from the Inn of the Five Graces in the heart of the city. Turn left and you’ll arrive at Loretto Chapel, home to an enigmatic spiral staircase leading from the nave to the choir loft. Its mysterious designer and builder disappeared after its completion, leaving without pay, and the staircase—which turns some 720 degrees and has no visible supports—baffles engineers to this day.

Drive 90 minutes north from Santa Fe, passing through kitschy Taos, and stop at the Taos Pueblo. This set of multi-story cubist adobe buildings dates back a

millennium, and the sculptural quality of the tranquil 19th-century San Geronimo Church drew the eye of photographer Ansel Adams. Even more powerful a sight is the tower of the prior San Geronimo Church, the rest of which was destroyed during a revolt in 1847. American troops bombarded the church where Native American revolutionaries had taken ref-uge, and a graveyard now stands where the nave once did. Touring the site with a local guide is an unforgettable experi-ence.

Even closer to Santa Fe is the major pilgrimage site of Santuario de Chimayó. It can be crowded, but the small side room called El Pocito retains its mystical atmosphere. In the middle of the room is a hole containing dirt reputed to have miraculous healing powers. It may sound naïve to some, but standing in El Pocito, it’s hard not to be moved by the power of the prayers and faith infusing the space.

AUBERGE RESORTS

The Andrew Harper Alliance currently partners with four of the Auberge Re-sorts’ properties: Auberge du Soleil and Calistoga Ranch, both in the Napa Valley; Esperanza, outside of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and Hotel Jerome, in Aspen, Colorado. All arguably Harper subscrib-ers’ and staff favorites, it is with great anticipation that we await the opening of several new Auberge resorts later this year and into 2017. We talked with Craig Reid, Auberge’s new CEO, about these openings and the philosophy behind their luxury resorts.

Q Auberge Resorts currently offers six hotels, resorts

and residence clubs, with another five on the horizon. What is Auberge’s growth strategy, and what has most recently affected this rather aggressive plan? The Auberge Resorts name has become synonymous with a relaxed style of craft-ed luxury, which resonates with affluent guests who are eager to explore and/or move beyond traditional luxury hotels to a more bespoke personal experience. Our founder, Mark Harmon, sensed that the “market” was in need of more products like ours and identified in Dan Friedkin a partner who would support this quest. Step number two was building our inter-nal capabilities—the strength and depth of the management team—and that’s where I enter the equation, along with all the other newcomers to the team.

The key ingredients in our recipe for growth are: to protect the soul and char-acter and the deep-seated individuality that distinguishes our hotels; introduce an urban boutique Auberge resort; intro-

duce a more youthful and approachable offering, such as VieVage; to team up with best-in-class developers in their re-spective markets to introduce our brand of luxury, often supported by a residential component—intimate, hand-crafted, luxurious, embracing the locale with a little spice, and delivering excellence with warmth and without pretense; and initially concentrate in the Americas and Europe, to optimize our resources.

What was the first resort in the collection, when did it open and how did it come to be?The company is named after its Napa Val-ley flagship, the award-winning Auberge du Soleil, which actually began as a restaurant tucked among hillside olive groves in the upper valley in 1981. In response to guest demand, we opened 50 cottage-style accommodations four years later. Auberge du Soleil played a large role in putting Napa Valley on the map as a luxury destination and, to this day, it remains the valley’s only five-star hotel. We have continued to polish the jewel. Just this summer, we unveiled some

beautifully redesigned rooms in advance of the Auberge’s 30th anniversary, which will be in 2015.

Aside from Auberge du Soleil, you also reinvented the cabin-in-the-woods concept in Napa Valley with Calistoga Ranch, and are set to open a third property, VieVage Napa Valley, in 2017. Will the new resort bring a similarly groundbreaking concept to the area? With VieVage Napa Valley we plan to redefine the concept of the 21st-century resort and speak to the evolution of Napa Valley as a destination. Travelers today are seeking an experience that is creatively designed, yet simple; relaxing yet social; regional yet timeless. With VieVage, we will build on the successes of our other Napa Valley hotels to offer a new product that is fresh, active, social and very appealing to a broad variety of guests. We believe that it will be a perfect complement to our current hotels in the area.

Several of us at Andrew Harper are excited about plans for an Auberge in Sun Valley, Idaho. Why did this addition make sense?Sun Valley has the enviable legacy of be-ing the first winter destination resort in America, and it has a rich history as a magnet for residents and affluent guests from both coasts. It’s a vibrant year-round destination that has been under-serviced by the luxury hotel market. We believe that Sun Valley is a perfect destination for the Auberge brand, with its focus on crafted luxury, engaging guest experi-ences and unique adventure programs.

Malliouhana is scheduled to open in November of this year in the British West Indies. How will the experience provided in the Caribbean differ from the others? Has this location presented any unique challenges?Malliouhana will open 30 years to the day after its first opening as a jet-set resort in the Caribbean. We’re orchestrating an end-to-end renovation that includes the creation of 46 spacious ocean-view rooms and suites; an open-air cliff-side restaurant spearheaded by award-winning chef Jeremy Bear-man; a signature Auberge spa; and a two-tiered Infinity-edge swimming pool flanked by private cabanas. Pre-vious Malliouhana guests will see a noticeable difference from the mo-ment they arrive. Design-wise, we’ve infused the interior spaces with a rich palette—it’s an urbane take on what the Caribbean is. We wanted to create something specific to this is-land—not just another swanky beach hotel, but something with depth and beauty that is unique to the destina-tion. The guest experience will be sophisticated, yet suitably relaxed in a pitch-perfect way. Location-wise, it’s an easy trip from the East Coast, where many of our loyal guests are based. The anticipation among our East Coast loyal-ists is enormous!

In addition to the locations, what are some of the other most distinguishable threads that run through each of your properties? All of our Auberge hotels and resorts are timeless, ultra-luxury properties offering our signature style of intimate, under-stated elegance. Our VieVage Hotels and Resorts brand represents a new take on luxury that brings together contemporary themes of design, community and well-ness in a fresh, active and social environ-ment. All of our hotels and resorts are

distinctive, but they do share a crafted approach to luxury that is expressed through captivating design, exceptional cuisine and spas and passionate service.

It seems a spa visit is an absolute must at your resorts. What is the philosophy behind the spas, and how are the unique experiences and treatments achieved? Our philosophy of wellness is one of multi-sensory experiences that enable guests to nurture body, mind and spirit in a breathtaking natural setting. Whether they seek rejuvenation in the spa or choose to relax and take in the view from their rooms, guests escaping to an Auberge resort will find the balance and renewal they need to return to their lives refreshed. Our guests are high-achieving people who want to relax and recharge. Our spa and programs are thoughtfully designed to celebrate our resorts’ exqui-site settings and deliver a feeling of com-plete well-being. The common thread at all our spas is the Auberge Anthology, a collection of three signature treatments we have created for all Auberge spas. These core treatments complement a col-lection of regionally inspired treatments and experiences that are available at each Auberge spa.

Speaking of experiences, the various locally inspired activities offered through Auberge Adventures seem to offer some truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime

opportunities, such as swimming with whale sharks in Cabo. Why are these adventurous pursuits such an integral part of Auberge? Our guests are active, inquisitive and ea-ger to explore. Auberge Adventures go beyond the conventional to offer new and different ways to experience a destina-tion. When added to the idyllic settings, world-class dining and spas at our resorts, we believe a little adventure or explora-tion makes for the perfect resort getaway.

We look forward to visiting all of the new Auberge properties opening this fall, into 2017 and beyond. Is there one in particular that you are most excited about?Nanuku is very exciting—Auberge is heading to Fiji! Set on two of the island’s best beaches, Nanuku is Fiji’s newest and most luxurious resort. Fifteen Balinese-style suite and villa accommodations are furnished with relaxed contemporary and Fijian décor, and feature expansive decks, private plunge pools and ocean views. It is by far the most luxurious hospitality offering in the region and is acclaimed for its blend of contemporary luxury and traditional Fijian culture, its sense of out-door adventure and highly personalized service. It embraces all of the Auberge hallmarks: sensational locale, exceptional service and cuisine and guest experiences that inspire a sense of discovery. It is a natural partnership and an exciting ad-dition to the Auberge Resorts Collection portfolio.

DREAM ESCAPE

We spoke with Dream Escape’s head of guiding, Rosie Peattie, about what makes the U.K.-based experiential tour and event company a true standout in the industry.

Q Dream Escape has a reputation as one of the top tour

operators in the U.K. To what do you owe this distinction? Our team of experts shares a single vi-sion: to be the best in the business by providing an unrivaled range of services and creative itinerary design for travel advisors and their clients. We are the only on-site to have offices in both Scotland and England and we also have a partner office in Ireland. For discerning travelers looking for a unique and creative travel experience we really are the “go-to” com-pany and you can be confident that we will take care of everything from start to finish—we leave nothing to chance.

Can you give us an overview of the Dream Escape experience? Dream Escape specializes in arranging private tours and visits. We can arrange almost anything you can think of; wheth-er it is a tour and lunch with the owners of a private castle, a behind-the-scenes visit to a royal palace, a Champagne re-ception in an art gallery or museum or a top package to a significant sporting or cultural event. These are just examples—we love a challenging client brief because this allows us to be very creative when planning a bespoke itinerary. Our insider knowledge provides you with the insight to select the right location for inquisitive kids, active families, multigenerational celebrations, wilderness retreats and par-ties with mobility issues. We create the day by day itinerary during your stay and

you just let us know what you’d like to do and when!

How does a guided tour with Dream Escape provide a more exclusive and authentic experience for the traveler? As an in-country on-site with guides as staff members, we have a natural advan-tage insofar as we know our own country like the back of our hands. We know the best-kept secrets, the hidden gems and the best ways to feature them within a great program. Because of this we can offer far more than a standard itinerary based around a set list of hotels—this is the true advantage of working with Dream Escape. Our fantastic list of per-sonal and professional contacts built up over our lifetimes is second to none and the answer to even the most difficult question is never more than a phone call away. The people we can call on to take care of clients are all genuine experts in their own fields and many of them are internationally renowned.

Much of the U.K. remains under private ownership in the form of large estates owned by members of the aris-tocracy such as dukes, clan chiefs, lairds or the privately wealthy. Many of these hidden estates have amazing estate cot-tages and private apartments, and we can easily include these five-star properties as part of a tour through Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. We can recommend the most suitable private castle, mansion or lodge and we will orchestrate every element required to make any gathering completely unique. It is, of course, im-

portant to know which ones are the best. It is therefore essential to visit first—this is what we do to make sure we are giving the very best recommendations.

Above all, we are on-the-ground problem-solvers and facilitators, on hand to ensure every moment of a holiday runs smoothly. For every tour, we take into account the group dynamics and find a balance to ensure that the tour is interest-ing and rewarding for every member of the group. Attention to detail, thorough preparation and forward planning make the trips memorable for clients and fun for the guide as well. This makes a huge difference to the client’s experience—be-cause everything is being taken care of by a professional, the client can concentrate on enjoying their holiday.

Can you share some examples of the most extraordinary and memorable experiences you’ve arranged? A great example of a spectacular event we created relates to the continuing popu-larity of Harry Potter. Dream Escape recreated the “Hogwarts Express” using the renowned Jacobite steam train. With a full complement of witches, wizards and “magical” food, this unique experi-ence (including hand-made personalized wooden wands for the kids) could only have been delivered by an on-site with significant insider knowledge, creative flair and the best little black book of contacts.

For another of our clients, we ar-ranged a private evening tour of a malt whisky distillery which involved arriving and departing by boat. We then arranged

for renowned chef Albert Roux to prepare a birthday dinner for the host and his family and friends in a private castle—this was before he was surprised by a very rare bottle of whisky from his year of birth. The finale was a fireworks dis-play choreographed to his favorite piece of classical music—a dramatic end to a spectacular trip.

We also designed a gathering for an extended family of 14 adults and eight children. The grandfather needed a motor-ized scooter to get around and a lift to get to his bedroom. However, they also wanted a private historic castle for a week—‘at least five-star’ was the brief. We found just the right place for them and, on arrival, they were met by their curator who looked after them for the week—arranging everything and taking on all the questions and opera-tional requirements. Cars were delivered to the castle so members of the family could explore the local area themselves. We had a tailor secretly measure all the men for highland dress for the gala dinner on the last night, and a surprise 12-person pipe band and photographer on hand to cap-ture the evening. We took care of every last detail—there were private boat trips, great restaurants and little pubs and inns throughout the week.

It sounds like you’re well-equipped to accommodate any sort of group, even families with small children. How do you specifically tailor activities for the kids? The sky is the limit for family holidays—if the kids are happy, everyone is happy!

The range of family-friendly activities and experiences we can provide to suit any age group is unsurpassed. From quad-bike adventures on private estates, treasure hunts in atmospheric castles or hidden city streets, land yachting on a beach or private falconry lessons and husky racing in the wilderness—there is really no limit to what we can deliver.

Many of our guides have their own children. We understand the needs of clients traveling with families and how important it is for children to not only have fun but to also have their knowledge broadened.

How are your guides chosen? What credentials and prior experience must they possess? One of my responsibilities is to choose the guide who is best-suited to a particu-lar client or group. Fortunately there is a very strong pool to choose from and we are all very well qualified. Blue Badge Guides undergo an intensive train-ing program on all aspects of the area they guide in, be it Scotland, Ireland, England or Wales. This covers history, architecture, archaeology, art, geology, literature, customs and folklore, religion, politics, law and genealogy. They also regularly update and enhance their skills and knowledge through a program of continuous professional development. We never forget that it’s our clients’ holi-day, so a sense of humor is also essential. Our job is to make it the best and most memorable trip they have ever had.

What are some of the most interesting backgrounds or areas of expertise of your guides and guide services? Individual guides have university degrees in art, music, history and geography, to name but a few. In addition, we all have our own specific areas of expertise and in-terests which could be literally anything: wildlife, geology, Neolithic monuments, clan history, whisky, the Monarchy, Edwardian architecture, world wars, art history or fashion. Whatever the client’s interests may be, we will find the guide to suit them best.

Additionally, many guides have lived and worked abroad which gives us an understanding of other nationalities and needs. We know what it is like to arrive in a new country and are mindful of this during the planning stage for every trip.

You have a few interesting partnerships, such as with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. How do these types of partnerships add to guests’ experiences? These unique partnerships mean that we have unrivaled, exclusive access to people, places and experiences which simply aren’t available to anyone else. They have taken time to develop and are an affirmation of Dream Escape’s posi-tion as the true destination expert for the British Isles. We know Andrew Harper clients have high expectations and Dream Escape aims to exceed them, every time.

What do you find most captivating about the British Isles? There are many elements which make the British Isles unique so it is difficult to isolate them individually. Above all, there is something for everyone whatever their interests and passions may be—dramatic, unspoiled landscapes; ancient historic and prehistoric sites; bustling cities; hid-den villages; stunning architecture; iconic art collections; gourmet dining; luxurious accommodations—the list is long! Ultimately though, it is the people that I meet on my journeys who make all the difference.

UNLOCKING THE HEART OF CHILE & ARGENTINA

February 25–March 12, 2015

There is an irrepressible energy in South America, drawing all eyes below the equa-tor. Maybe it’s the spark that comes from Brazil playing host to both the World Cup and the Olympics, or perhaps it’s the buzz of a burgeoning viticulture and culinary scene as both Argentina and Chile produce increasingly delicious wines. Or maybe it’s the influx of alluring new hotels through-out the continent. Most likely, it’s all of this and more.

We invite you to join this special Andrew Harper Signature Tour that celebrates the best of Chile and Argentina. The majority of flights on this itinerary are by private jet, thus avoiding the rigors of modern com-mercial air travel. This will be a stylish and memorable journey.

THE SPLENDORS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA

August 28–September 9, 2015

Botswana’s Okavango Delta is the ideal location for a safari. Here, upscale camps such as Mombo, Abu Camp and Sanctuary Chief’s Camp are extremely comfortable, with spacious and deluxe accommodations, but they feel much closer to nature. Permanent structures are not permitted in the Okavango, so wood and canvas are the customary building materials. Here, you will be surrounded by a primeval Africa that has scarcely changed in the past 20,000 years, where vast herds still roam great distances, unimpeded by fences and oblivious to the modern world.

Journey to Africa on Andrew Harper’s Signature Southern Africa experience to discover what the generous people, his-tory, wildlife and stunning landscapes have to offer.
