Transposed Score

Program Note:Frozen Atmospheres for Alto Saxophone and Electronics was commissioned by Nick Zoulek in 2012. It was written in Wisconsin, a particularly cold and snowy part of the US. The work is comprised of three short movements each of which strives to convey a different affect. The electronic portion of the work uses many different samples, from saxophones, a large trash can, and water, to ice melting and a prayer bell. While writing Frozen Atmospheres I was thinking of my experiences living in both Maine and Wisconsin and the frozen otherworldly nature of the winters in each location.
Performance Notes:
All accidentals carry through the bar.
The electronic notation is not a complete transcription of every electronic event. Instead it is intended as a guide that points out electronic sounds that can the performer find his place and to some extent understand some of the mimetic nature of the sounds.
This indicated timbral changes in the fingering of a note. The circle means open or standard fingering and the plus sign means that you should use an alternative fingering.
This is a timbral trill. It is essentially the same as above but the two fingerings should be trilled. The circle or plus sign above the note indicated the starting fingering.
These are keytaps. The can be articulated at pitch or simply fingered and with not air moving through the horn.
Technical:
This work is for alto saxophone and stereo fixed media. Ideally the saxophone should be amplified to better balance with the electronics. The performer should also use a click track. This additional track can be sent either from a Max patch or as a separate audio file played out of a sequencer.
