Android is the operating system that powers more than one billion smartphones and tablets. Since

these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert. Whether it’s

getting directions or even slicing virtual fruit, each Android release makes something new possible.

We developed the Nexus 6. This new phone has a contoured aluminum

frame, a 6-inch Quad HD display and a 13 megapixel camera. The large screen is complemented by dual front-facing stereo speakers that deliver high-fidelity sound, making it as great for movies and gaming as it is for doing work. It also comes with a Turbo Charger, so you can get up to six hours of use with only 15 minutes of charge.

A new tablet built in partnership with HTC. Nexus 9, with brushed metal

sides and 8.9-inch screen, is small enough to easily carry around in one hand, yet big enough to work on. And since more and more people want to have the same simple experience they have on their tablets when they have to do real work, we designed a keyboard folio that magnetically attaches to the Nexus 9, folds into two different angles and rests securely on your lap like a laptop.

Earlier this year, we launched Android Wear, bringing Android to wearables.

Since then, the first watches powered by Android Wear, the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live, have gone on sale, developers have already built thousands of apps enhanced for Wear, and great new watches are becoming available from more partners.

Android Wear

First, we’re bringing offline music playback and GPS support to Android Wear. Go for a run or bike ride with your Android

wearable and leave your phone at home. You’ll be able to listen to music stored on your watch via Bluetooth headphones. And if your watch includes a GPS sensor, you can track your distance and speed too.The second update will enable downloadable watch faces, so you can customi-ze the visual design of your watch’s home screen to show the information you want to see most—like your calendar or fitness sensors. Developers will soon be working on watch faces, making them available on Google Play.

Respond to texts, instant messages and

emails by voice. Ask questions like “Will

it rain this weekend?” and get straight

answers.

We challenged ourselves to create a visual language for our users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.

This is material design. This spec is a living document that will be updated as we continue to develop the tenets and specifics of material design.
