What is Android O.S?

1. Android OS is open source nature.2. This operating system primarily used in

mobile .3. The code is written in Java and based on

the Linux operating system.4. Android OS is a Linux-based platform for

mobile phones.5. The Android operating system is

symbolized by a green colored Android Robot logo.

6. The Android OS consists of numerous Java applications and Java core libraries running under the Java-based object oriented application framework and the Dalvik Virtual Machine (VM).

History of Android OS

1. Android OS was initially developed by android in 2003.

2. Google backed financially and later purchased in 2005.

3. Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance.

4. Android had a humble beginning in 2008, but over the years the OS has occupied quite a large space in the market.

5. The T-Mobile G1, announced on September 23, 2008, was the first Android OS smartphone to be officially introduced to the market.

Android 1.0 (G1).

1. This version released in 2008 with HTC T-Mobile G1.2. This version provided services like GPS and

Bluetooth.3. It also provides Google services like Gmail, Google

Maps ,and Google Calendar, Android Market with about 35 apps like YouTube ,amazon mp3 store.

4. Multitasking but the OS did not have Microsoft Exchange Server and camcorder.

Android 1.5 (Cupcake)

1. Google wanted to launch this version as 1.2, but the company finally decided to make it a major revision and made it 1.5 instead.

2. It support for third-party virtual keyboards loaded with text prediction and dictionary for custom words, Video recording and upload to YouTube, toggle between camera and video modes.

3. It also provides photo gallery and camera with bulk photo deleting option, better and more polished user interface, several built-in widgets like calendar, music player and picture frame, redesigned Android Market with Browsing categories that included Apps, Games, Downloads and filters, support for gestures and voice-to-text option.

Android 1.6 (Donut)

1. Released in September 2009.2. It included several new features like Android

Search, which will let you search both online andlocally on the phone through contacts, calendars, music, and any app with the proper code, virtual onscreen keyboard, enhanced voice and text entry search that included bookmark, contacts and web.

3. new GestureBuilder development tool, Home screen widgets and folders, handwriting gestures,  Stereo Bluetooth, Google turn-by-turn navigation feature.

Android 2.0/2.1 (Éclair)

1. The new SKD called Éclair was launched in October 2009 followed by a bug-fix version 2.0.1 in December 2009 and 2.1 in January 2010.

2. The new version and its updates added features like Bluetooth 2.1 support, flash and digital zoom, scene mode, white balance, color effect and macro focus for the camera, multi-touch support, multiple user accounts, Quick Contact, live wallpapers, five home screens, improved keyboard, microphone icon for voice dictation in emails, speech-to-text option

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)

1. Google released Gingerbread officially in December 2010.

2. This version was designed for optimizing speed, memory and performance.

3. It provided WebM video compression support, Near Field Communication (NFC), rich multimedia, option for viewing and controlling downloads from browser, email, and other apps, Internet telephone over SIP, App Manager, support for gyroscope, barometer, gravimeter, switch to front-facing camera from camera app and more.

Android 3.0/ 3.1 / 3.2 (Honeycomb)

1. Launched in February 2011.2. The OS came with optimized Tablet UI, revamped

widgets and better multitasking, private browsing, USB Host, Dual-pane modes for address book, e-mail, redesigned keyboard and improved copy/paste video chatting with Google Talk, 3D graphics support, multi-select, clipboard, and drag-and-drop option, New APIs for Bluetooth A2DP and HSP and full-screen-mode photo gallery.

3. Motorola Xoom is the first Android 3.X tablet to be released.

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

1. launched in October 2011.2. It is designed to work both on smartphones

and tablets.3. It includes virtual buttons, Face Unlock, widget

management, Android Beam, new Calendar app with pinch-to-zoom option, revamped Gmail user interface, new contacts and social networking features, saving web pages offline.

Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean)

The expected features include File manager, Jelly Bean Lite - a lighter version of Android OS for midrange and lower end smartphones, integrated Google Chrome, Battery, Power Distribution and Efficient OS, Efficient Upgrade and more.

Android 6.0: Key Lime Pie?

While we are still expecting to see the launch of Jelly Bean, some reports suggest that the next version after Jelly Bean will be Key Lime Pie.
