A report prepared by the Olongapo City Police said au-thorities were able to secure the identity of the suspect “after coordination with the United States Naval Criminal Investiga-tion Service.”

Pemberton’s superiors took him into custody on the USS Peleliu after the killing of 26-year-old Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude in a motel in Olongapo City shortly before midnight last Saturday.

Pemberton’s latest assign-ment was with the 2nd Battal-ion 9th Marines.

He is now being held on board the Peleliu docked in Subic Bay. Pemberton was among the hundreds of US servicemen who took part in the recent naval exercise be-tween US and Filipino forces in Zambales.

MANILA (Oct. 15) - Navy Captain Luzviminda Camacho, the first Fili-pino woman to ever lead a United Nations peacekeeping contin-gent, has successfully brought home her 156-strong peacekeeping force from Haiti.

Camacho is not only the first Fili-pina contingent commander. She is also the first woman to become con-tingent commander in the history of the UN peacekeeping force.

In a ceremony at the gen-eral headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Phil-ippines, Camacho and the rest of the 17th AFP contingent to Haiti were welcomed by Navy Flag

MANILA (Oct. 15)— Five of the six United States Navy ships were cleared to leave Philippine waters late Tuesday, while the amphibious landing vessel USS Peleliu that holds the suspect in the slaying of a Filipino trans-gender was ordered to remain.

Retired Gen. Eduardo Oban, executive director of the Visit-ing Forces Agreement commis-sion, said that the grounding of the American vessels has been lifted, while the Peleliu is further subject to investigation.

US Marine Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, sus-pect in the killing of Jeffrey "Jennifer" Laude in Olongapo City, is detained aboard the Peleliu, reportedly along with three others who are being considered as witnesses in the upcoming murder case.

"All other ships may now leave the Philippines to proceed with their respective operations or missions," Oban said in a state news report.

The vessels docked at Subic Bay either to re-fuel or to trans-port thousands of American servicemen for the annual US-Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercises, or PHIBLEX.

Adm. Samuel Locklear, com-mander of the US Pacific Com-mand, ordered the vessels grounded, as the USS Peleliu

and the USS Georgetown were locked down for a probe by the US Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS).

NCIS agents are working with the Philippine National Police in the investigation, while Pemberton remained under US custody amid calls

to turn him over to Philippine authorities.

"The bottom line is that all those involved in the case will stay and Peleliu is not going to leave until the investigation is done," Oban said.

Other crewmen of the Pele-liu, meanwhile, are allowed to

be transferred to other vessels and leave the country.

Laude, 26, was found naked and lifeless inside a lodge last Saturday after spending the night with a suspected for-eigner. Pemberton was named as suspect and is expected to face murder charges.

The Marine is among the 3,500 American soldiers who participated in PHIBLEX, which concluded last week. Armed Forces chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said that incident oc-curred while the forces were on break from the joint exercises. -Philstar

MANILA (Oct. 15)- Two lawmakers stressed the im-portance of the positions of the country's Southeast Asian neighbors on the West Philip-pine Sea dispute.

Albay Rep. Francis Bichara and Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello co-authored House Resolution (HR) 729 or "A resolution directing the Committee on Foreign Affairs to conduct an inquiry, in aid

of legislation, on the current positions adopted by members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on the West Philippine Sea Maritime Dispute between the Philip-pines and China."

The lawmakers stressed the importance of informing the public how other Southeast Asians view the pending case between the Philippines and China under the United Nations

Convention on the Law of the Sea. The resolution further im-plicates that it is the duty of the Department of Foreign Affairs to inform the Congress about the actions being taken by ASE-AN members and their position on the territorial dispute in the West Philippines Sea.

"The continuing Chinese incursions, including harass-ment of Philippine civilian ves-sels and fishermen in our own

exclusive economic zone in the vicinity of the Kalayaan Island Group and the Scarborough Shoal increased the tension among the various countries claiming sovereignty in various portions of the West Philippine Sea and contiguous bodies of water," Bichara and Bello said.

The authors noted that China has recently made claims that threatened not only Philippine territories as stated by interna-

tional law but also those of other Southeast Asian countries. These threats have been accelerating due to China's aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea.

HR 729 would "promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for jus-tice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter."-Philstar

MANILA (Oct. 15) – An-other Mt. Mayon crater glow was observed before dawn Wednesday, Albay Governor Joey Salceda said.

In his Twitter account, Sal-ceda posted a photo of the Mayon crater glowing, saying this is one of the criteria set by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in raising the alert level of the volcano to 4.

Salceda said the crater glow was observed between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

In its latest advisory, Phivol-cs said Mayon Volcano remains under alert 3. The volcano remains in a lull, with only one rockfall event recorded in the past 24 hours.

Under alert 3, eruption is possible within weeks. The alert level will be raised to 4 once volcanologists observe a persis-tent tremor and low frequency-type earthquakes, sustained increase or abrupt decrease of sulfur dioxide emission, and intense crater glow.

Last Sunday, Phivolcs con-firmed that lava flowed out of Mayon. Phivolcs director Renato Solidum explained that magma was at the summit of the volcano and currently coming out, but ''there is no sign yet for us to warrant the increase to Alert Level Four.'' abs-cbnnews.com

MANILA (Oct. 15)- The United Nationalist Alliance on Wednesday denied reports that Vice President Jejomar Binay is severing his ties with President Benigno Aquino III after he lashed out against the adminis-tration's "selective justice."

Speaking to ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG), Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said Binay was not criticizing Aquino himself and was only giving his legal opinion on the administration's treatment of its allies hounded by corruption.

"Hindi ko alam kung bakit ang headline ng ibang mga dyaryo ngayon ay kakalas at ang pinapalabas ng iba ay binabatikos niya si Pangulong Aquino. Lahat naman ng argu-ments niya doon ay based on legal basis," Tiangco, UNA's interim-president, told UKG.

Tiangco said only President Aquino can remove Binay from his Cabinet.

"He will always serve at the pleasure of the President.

Habang may tiwala at habang niniwala ang Pangulo na siya ay makakatulong sa programa, habang naniniwala ang pangulo na siya ay makakatulong sa ating mahihirap, nandiyan po siya," Tiangco said.

During a Public Attoney's Office event on Tuesday, Binay slammed the Department of Justice (DOJ) for ordering the National Bureau of Investiga-tion (NBI) to probe allegations that he amassed kickbacks from every project in Makati City when he was still the mayor.

"There is selective justice. Kaming oposisyon ang laging tina-target. Matapos mapaku-long 'yung tatlo (Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Jr.), wala na," Binay said at the event shown by television reports on Tuesday night.

"Si (Budget) Secretary (Flor-encio) Abad, ayaw magbigay ng dokumento ng DAP (Disburse-ment Acceleration Program). Si (PNP chief Alan) Purisima,

walang kaso," he added. He also criticized pro-

nouncements made by Justice

Secretary Leila De Lima that the evidence the NBI could gather may be used to initiate

an impeachment complaint against him.

Binay also accused the DOJ of turning a blind eye to the administration's DAP, which was declared partially unconsti-tutional by the Supreme Court.

A member of Aquino's Lib-eral Party, meanwhile, dared Binay to clarify his political al-legiance by cutting his ties with the president.

"Matagal naman dapat na kumalas si Vice President Bi-nay... dahil namamangka po siya sa dalawang ilog. Hindi niya malaman ang kanyang tunay na kulay whether he's the opposition leader or an alter-ego of the President be-ing a member of the Cabinet," Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice also told UKG.

"Kailangan din po talaga ng oposisyon sa isang administra-tion. Ngayon kung naglalaro ka, you're either here or there, malilito ang mga mamamayan," he added. -Philstar

MANILA (Oct. 15) - Sena-tor Miriam Defensor-Santiago again used a speaking engage-ment to slam Vice President Jejomar Binay for his refusal to answer the accusations against him at the Senate, where a subcommittee is investigating reports of rigged biddings in Makati City during his term as mayor and allegations of ill-gotten wealth.

Speaking before a gathering of reproductive health advo-cates at the Philippine Chris-tian University on Wednesday, Santiago said Binay was “forum shopping” when he insisted he would defend himself only at

sufficient, necessary charges will be filed against him. Let the court decide in the appreciation of the evidence,” he said.

Mayor said a special task force has been created to look into the killing of Laude.

He said that Pemberton is likely to remain in the custody of the US Navy based on a pro-vision in the Visiting Forces of Agreement.

Mayor said such provision states that while the US Navy maintains custody of the sus-pect, Philippine courts would try him for the crime he is charged.

Mayor said the local police have yet to determine the mo-tive for the killing.

“As of now, what’s important

Miriam says Binay’s silence ‘alarming’the Ombudsman.

“With all of these accusa-tions aired on news media and particularly in the social media, the silence of Mr. Binay and his lawyer to present counter-evidence is alarming,” Santiago said in her speech.

Santiago stressed that the burden is on Binay to prove the allegations wrong, describing as

a “most dramatic bombshell” the claim of former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado that Binay owns a P1.2-billion estate in Rosario, Batangas.

The place for Binay to de-fend himself, the senator said, is the Senate. Santiago had criticized Binay for snubbing the Senate’s investigation at a speech on Friday last week,

saying his silence implies guilt.“Unfortunately, the law does

not allow Binay to just choose the forum where he shall make his defense. What is happening at the present is that while the Senate is conducting an inquiry in aid of legislation, the case is being tried before the bar of public opinion,” she said. abs-

is (the suspect was) positively identified by a witness. Under the law, even a lone witness, as long as he’s credible, can be sufficient already in the filing of the case,” he added.

Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino, in a radio interview, said the suspect immediately invoked his right to counsel after admitting having done “something wrong.”

After having some drinks at the Ambyanz Disco bar on Mag-saysay Street, Laude and Pem-berton checked into the Celzone Lodge nearby at around 10:45 p.m.

Hotel cashier Elias Galamos discovered the murder before midnight shortly after Pember-ton had left the hotel without Laude. -By Cecille Suerte Feli-pe/PhilStar/With Jaime Laude, Ric Sapnu, Bebot Sison Jr.

Officer-in-command Vice Admi-ral Jesus Millan and AFP Chief of Staff General Gregorio Cata-pang Jr. Millan commended the troops for displaying the Filipino brand of service.

Catapang, meanwhile, laud-ed Camacho's leadership, saying it is an indication that the AFP looks only at soldiers' merits, and not their gender.

Of the 156 peacekeepers she commanded, only 10 are female.

The media asked Camacho how hard it was to rein in 146 men, soldiers at that. With a smile, Camacho said, "Hindi nila ako pinapahirapan, kasi alam nilang ‘pag ginawa nila

‘yon, ako ang magpapahirap sa kanila."

This is not the first time Camacho has broken ground for women in military service.

She is also the first Filipina to ever become a commanding officer of a warship. Camacho has captained four Philippine Navy vessels: the BRP Magat Salamat (Patrol Ship 20), BRP Iloilo (Patrol Ship 32), BRP Teotimo Figuracion (Patrol Gunboat 389), and BRP Manuel Gomez (Patrol Gunboat 388).

Asked what style of leader-ship she has, Camacho said it is a mix of acting as the troop’s mother and commander.

"Nanay din ako," she said. "Inilatag ko na sa kanila ang mga dos and don’ts ko, maaga pa lang." -abs-cbnnews.com

THANKSGIVING Day is over. One day in which we set aside time in our

busy schedules to give thanks to God. There is nothing wrong with that but the word of God tells us that this should be a continual, daily, attitude.

Ephesians. 5:19, 20 tells Christians to "Speak to one an-other with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

And I Thessalonians. 5:16-18 says, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

Paul’s main subject here is Praise, Thanksgiving. Notice the other important words in these passages; Always, Continu-ally, and in All Circumstances. It sounds as if Paul is talking about a church service here, especially in Eph. "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart..."

But he isn’t. He is talking about a continual attitude for Christians - an attitude of the heart. How we are to be to each other. To be thankful in

EARLIER this month I met with H.E. Petronila Garcia, the new Philippine Ambas-

sador to Canada, and we had a positive and engaging discus-sion at the Embassy in Ottawa. Our talk ranged from how the Filipino community as a whole has done so well in many ways all over Canada and that the future looks very promising. We also shared our common thoughts and opinions with regard to education, tourism and the importance of building

a stronger and healthier rela-tionship between Canada and the Philippines. I really enjoyed our discussion and I am sure that into the future we will be meeting again.

Today, immigration domi-nates the relationship between Canada and the Philippines as the need for immigrants to Canada is very strong and will continue to be in the years ahead. As for the population in the Philippines, it continues to grow and, in many ways, the people who left the Philippines continue to contribute to the

economic prosperity of their country of birth.

In other words, Canada’s immigration policies along with the Philippines’ willingness to meet Canada’s needs has trans-lated into economic and social prosperity for both countries. Using Manitoba as an example, I explained how the Filipino community has contributed to Manitoba’s economy and social heritage for the past 60 years and how the community has become a part of the very fabric

all circumstances, we need a proper perspective of our cir-cumstances and of our God. Only then we will be able to give thanks to the Lord always.

There are at least three atti-tudes that steal away our grati-tude. Three things that keep us from being thankful.

One is our pride. This is the attitude that says, "Nobody ever gave me anything, I worked hard for everything I have." For years you studied hard and now it is finally paying off. With this kind of attitude, we feel that we have no one to thank but ourselves.

Another attitude that keeps us from being thankful is a criti-cal spirit or constant complain-ing. Instead of being grateful, this person will always find something to complain about.

A third attitude that keeps us from being grateful is care-lessness. Someone once said that if the stars only came out once a year, we would stay out all night to watch them. But they are there every night and we have grown accustomed to them.

The Israelites grumbled be-cause they had no food, so God miraculously sent manna (a crust-like bread) to cover the ground each day except the Sabbath day. Then they started to grumble because it was the same thing every day.

They had a miracle - straight from God every day but were no longer satisfied. Because of pride, carelessness or a critical

IF there is no corruption, there is no poverty: kung walang cor-rupt, walang mahirap. That campaign slogan, combined with the national mourning that accompanied the death of former

President Corazon Aquino, propelled her only son to Malacañang in 2010. The second President Aquino promised his “bosses” that his administration would take the straight path or matuwid na daan.

Over four years after he gave that promise, only 36 percent of Filipinos think President Aquino has fulfilled it. A survey con-ducted last month by pollster Pulse Asia showed that 29 percent believed the President had fulfilled the promise while 34 percent were undecided.

Malacañang opted to look on the bright side and point out that the undecided 34 percent might yet see the achievements of the straight path. But the results of the survey – the first on the topic since the President assumed power – give a good indication that the “bosses” are seeing the administration straying from the tuwid na daan.

The survey was taken as questions of impropriety and corrup-tion were raised against administration officials, among them the President’s favorite cop, Director General Alan Purisima. The Metro Rail Transit service is a disaster, and the culprit is believed to be poor maintenance linked to a sweetheart deal awarded to Liberal Party supporters and a relative of the sacked MRT chief. The President has rejected calls to let go of Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, who is facing corruption charges over the Disbursement Acceleration Program.

At the same time, the investigation of cases involving the DAP and Priority Development Assistance Fund or congressional pork barrel continues to zero in mainly on the political opposition, reinforcing accusations that daang matuwid is engaged in selec-tive prosecution.

Survey results change, and Malacañang is correct in pointing out that the undecided may yet have a positive view of the straight path. That shift, however, is possible only if the administration provides a reason for a change of heart. Philstar

Taking steps to ensure a healthier environment

INTROSPECTIVE

TONY KATIGBAK I COULDN’T help but notice that these past few weeks — months even — have

been dominated by bad news. Problems at the port, traffic that lasts for hours and hours, rain, floods, and the usual politics, corruption, and crime thrown in the mix. Sometimes it’s enough to make you wonder if there’s any good news out there at all. I can definitely understand that. Just the other day, it rained for less than an hour and immedi-ately the roads were flooded and I heard stories about people taking over three hours to get home.

What does this mean? Is this traffic the “sign of a progressive economy” as we’ve been told? I don’t think so. Perhaps the economy is progressing, but all that the worsening traffic situation is proving is that we don’t know how to progress with the times. As I always say, we are far too reactionary and we don’t plan ahead. It’s no wonder we can’t keep up with how the times are changing. We can’t or just don’t predict what the future will hold so there is no way for us to plan ahead. Instead, we react when a situation has already reached a breaking point.

I definitely think it’s time the government change the way they do things. After all, they can’t keep doing the same thing the same way and expecting dif-ferent results. That is, after all, the very definition of insanity. We all see how fast the world is changing and can get a glimpse of what we need to do to keep up with the times, and it’s time

BOYS, girls and transgen-ders just want to have fun – sometimes with dire

consequences. This is a reality that Manila

and Washington must contend with as the two governments move to strengthen defense cooperation and increase US troop presence here.

The best that our two coun-tries can do, if we want the al-liance to remain healthy, is to craft fair and reciprocal rules governing wild nights gone awry involving our military personnel.

In such situations, the usual bone of contention is legal jurisdiction, including custody of a visiting serviceman. Legal jurisdiction is seen as one of the measures of national sover-eignty, and the issue has gotten the US in trouble in its military involvements overseas.

We saw this in the case of Daniel Smith, the 19-year-old US Marine lance corporal who was accused of raping a Filipina we called Nicole, who had a predilection for Caucasian boyfriends.

Although US officials at the time were careful not to com-ment on the merits of that case, I got the impression from talk-ing with them that they believed Smith was innocent.

Smith, like his three co-accused US Marines, was even-tually cleared by the Court of Appeals. This was after Nicole, to the dismay of women’s rights advocates, recanted her state-ment and hied off to the US, saying she was no longer sure if she had been raped.

You have to be wretchedly

One of the things I think we need to truly start on today is focusing much-needed attention on green

initiatives and finding ways to conserve energy and preserve the environment.

we start doing it instead of wait-ing for the day to arrive when it’s too late.

One of the things I think we need to truly start on today is focusing much-needed atten-tion on green initiatives and finding ways to conserve energy and preserve the environment. We’ve all heard it before, of course. Being environmen-tally conscious is not new to us, however we have yet to really make hard and concrete plans that can effect change. People are complaining about freak storms, like Yolanda that devastated us, and the fact that even the regular monsoon season rains seem to get more and more powerful each year. We complain about the intense heat beating down on us, and the fact that instead of cooling down during rainy season it remains as hot and humid as it did during the summer. We all know why — the weather is going crazy because of climate change. The way we’ve ravaged the planet and our natural re-sources is taking its toll on the earth and the planet is starting to hit back.

Being more proactively con-scious of the impact we have on the environment is a big step to helping address climate change before it’s too late. Again, we should not be reactionary but already take small steps to make things better. Using eco-

friendly bags instead of plastic can help and choosing green and earth-friendly products whenever possible will make a difference, even if we don’t see it immediately. Plus, turning off appliances when not in use and unplugging them to save even more on electricity can make a huge impact.

Energy conservation is some-thing that I think we have to be particularly mindful of. After all, we don’t have an unlimited supply. We all experienced that just a few months ago when unscheduled power plant shut-downs caused a shortage in electricity and we had no choice but to endure rotational black-outs to make sure everyone had power. The fact of the matter is that the demand is too high and the supply can’t always meet it. This will only get worse as the years progress if steps aren’t taken now.

A good step to take in the battle for energy efficiency is the use of LED lighting. We’ve been hearing about this for years now, but now more than ever, the importance of this technology is becoming clear. In fact, just recently, LED technol-ogy won Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura the 2014 Nobel Physics Prize and a host of accolades for providing the globe with a great tool in the battle against global warming.

LED lamps and the energy efficient technology behind them can save millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2 - the greenhouse gas) emissions. LED lights last for about 100,000 hours, lasting much longer than their incandescent bulb and fluorescent light counterparts. They also use 10 times less energy compared to traditional light bulbs. In fact, research has shown that the maximum use of LED lighting can cut electricity used for lighting by as much as 80%. This can have a great im-pact on helping protect the en-vironment. Indeed the savings in electricity expenses alone would be enough of a reason to make the switch.

Though it might be initially costly to change to LED light-ing, the benefits in the long run more than make up for the amount. It’s just a matter of doing it and taking similar steps to ensure the survival of the planet.

***Another exciting piece of

news I came across last week was the arrival of the world’s largest passenger airplane at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The Airbus A380 of Emirates Airlines car-ried a whooping 517 passen-gers and what made the arrival even more personal was that a Filipino captain was at the helm when the airplane made her grand entrance.

Captain Franklin Mallari Desiderio has been with Emir-ates for the last five years and was with Philippine Airlines (PAL) before that. He said that the large aircraft could very well be heralding in a new way of traveling. Despite being so large, it is easy to maneuver, very roomy, and extremely comfortable. Plus it is equipped to fly non-stop from Dubai to Los Angeles, a 16-hour flight with passengers still feeling good by the time they reach their journey’s end.

This is good news consid-ering the recent string of bad news we’ve been hearing about unsafe flying situations and trouble that airlines, like the beleaguered Malaysian Airlines, have been facing. I hope this is just one of many steps the aviation industry is taking to improve flying conditions for passengers all over the world. Hopefully, traveling to differ-ent spots around the globe will continue to get easier as the years go by. And here’s hoping the improvements in airlines also trigger an improvement in our airport situation as well. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for that.

You can understand why the US military would want custody of its personnel who are accused of wrongdoing when the imputed offense occurs in

a failed state or a place where the accused has no hope of getting a fair trial.

wasted to be unable to remem-ber whether you said no or sat back and enjoyed it. But it seems Nicole got the happy ending she originally wanted. Meanwhile, the trial took four years out of Smith’s life.

How to ensure justice for both accuser and the accused must be finessed by the two governments if they want to sustain the health of a defense alliance.

***Before sending troops here

for joint military exercises, Washington pushed for the approval of the Visiting Forces Agreement under the two coun-tries’ Mutual Defense Treaty. Section 1(a), Article V on crimi-nal jurisdiction in the VFA states: “Subject to the provi-sions of this article, Philippine authorities shall have jurisdic-tion over United States person-nel with respect to offenses committed within the Philip-pines and punishable under the law of the Philippines.”

Section 6 of the same Article V, however, gives US military authorities custody of their per-sonnel “from the commission of

the offense until completion of all judicial proceedings.” But the provision does not prevent the US from waiving custody.

Probably taking note of the glacial pace of Philippine justice, the VFA also includes a provision giving local courts a year to resolve a case, after which the US can no longer be obliged to produce the accused to face judicial proceedings.

The Americans may want to clarify the meaning of “all judi-cial proceedings.” The Makati Regional Trial Court finished its trial in one year, but Smith stayed in US embassy custody until 2009, when he won his appeal following Nicole’s re-cantation.

During and after Smith’s trial, US officials repeatedly said they were happy with the VFA and saw no need for its renegotiation even if only to clarify certain provisions.

its military personnel very well, especially those who have been assigned to war zones. US mili-tary service is voluntary, and Americans who are prepared to lay their lives on the line for their country are treated as patriots.

You can understand why the US military would want custody of its personnel who are accused of wrongdoing when

the imputed offense occurs in a failed state or a place where the accused has no hope of getting a fair trial.

But when the crime is al-leged to have taken place in a democracy with a functioning justice system, US gestures of trust in that system strengthens bilateral ties.

Admittedly, the Philippine criminal justice system is dys-functional. Smith would have spent two decades in detention while waiting for a final ruling on his case if the VFA didn’t specify a deadline for judicial resolution.

Let’s admit as well that the state of our local jails is so de-plorable Pinoy VIPs accused of plunder are prepared to have most of their vital organs sur-gically removed and their stem cell treatment reversed just to have a reason to seek hospital detention and stay out of a regular jail.

But we’re not Somalia, and we’re a US treaty ally. The US can bear with the jail facili-ties of a middle-income treaty ally and trust that its accused military personnel will get fair treatment.

Otherwise the two govern-ments risk reinforcing Filipino doubts about the wisdom of getting deeper into a defense alliance with the world’s lone superpower.

Sure we need Uncle Sam – and other allies – for external defense. But even before Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude was found dead in a Subic motel last Sat-urday night, there have been persistent questions on whether Uncle Sam would actually come to our aid in defending our ter-ritory.

There is also the ticklish question of reciprocity in the VFA. The average Pinoy is pret-ty sure that if a Filipino soldier participated in joint military exercises with US troops in Ha-waii, went on R&R in Waikiki, hooked up with a transgender he thought was a woman and, enraged at being fooled, dunked the guy’s head in the toilet bowl until the victim drowned, the Pi-noy would end up in a Hawaiian jail faster than you can say Uncle Sam. No question about which country should get custody.

In the case of Jeffrey Laude, the lone suspect in his death Saturday night, identified as Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, is in the custody of the US Pacific Command, on a US amphibious assault ship, which is an extension of US territory even if it is docked in Subic Bay.

The chief of the US Pacific Command, Adm. Samuel Lock-lear III, who happens to be in town for meetings with Philip-pine security officials, has or-dered their two Navy ships that participated in war games in Subic to stay put in this country until the mess is sorted out.

Even better is for the Ameri-cans to waive jurisdiction over Pemberton. The waiver is al-lowed, and is good for an alli-ance.

BROADCAST journalist Karen Davila de-tailed how the owner of La Loma, Quezon City’s oldest lechon house grew her business and rebuilt her life after getting bankrupt (October 8) in “My Puhunan.”

Nena Cesario put up Mila’s Lechon in 1968. Now known as the “Reyna ng Loma” due to Mila’s Lechon’s popularity, Nena started the lechon house with an initial capi-tal of P700, but it has since expanded into branches in different locations in Luzon. In “My Puhunan,” Nena also shared how she got out of bankruptcy after a family friend swindled millions of pesos from her.

Mila started selling food on the streets when she was younger in the Quezon prov-ince.

“I would walk kilometers wearing worn out sandals, no kidding,” she shared.

EVER wondered why the Mazda RX-7 was just lef t behind? One of the most popular Japanese vehicles ever sold by Mazda, all of a sudden came to a halt. Then the RX-8 was developed in i ts place, af ter a

couple of years to replace the "ever so popular," RX-7. Yet, now to look at the latest and more advanced technology, you wonder, what's nex t? NEXT?

WHAT’SWell let me tell you friends, Mazda

has come out wi th MANY dif ferent concept designs for the fully remod-eled RX-9, that was set for the 2015 lineup.

The RX-9 dubbed as " the succes-sor " to the previous RX-7 coupe (sold in the U.S throughout 1979-1985) rather than the RX-8. Rumor has it that the RX-9 will come with an advanced electrically-driven forced induction system. This means that with the aid of this electric charger, this RX-9 model could be looking at about 300HP. From

the 1.6L rotary (16X rotary engine), to an approximate 2755lbs, this Mazda will be sharing i ts chassis with the all new MX-5 as well.

Most likely, we won't see the RX-9 any time soon, the 2015 model being just a " forever ongoing concept," to which they've said "i t should be much smoother and more interesting than the RX-7 & RX-8. Developers are promising that i t'll be (hopefully) launched by nex t year. Engineers seem to make i t a hard task to make this model, stand anywhere close

to the Mazda Z lineup. Yet, with the promise that the style will be excellent and per formance to be fully upgraded. Rumors and gossip is basically what the RX-9 thrives of f of, yet with the discontinuation of the RX-8 back in 2012, due to high emission levels, the developers and engineers at Mazda have quite a few things to do, to con-vince us fully.

Won't i t lack power if the ef ficiency level is all that worries them? Although, Mazda has said that they'll be look-ing at a more ef ficient and power ful

rendition to the new, sleek and bold Mazda RX-9.

Given that it's only word of mouth, not knowing if i t's entirely true, the RX-9 may be looking at a 800cc dual-rotor HYBRID engine. Even though most Mazdas come with the Wankel turning motor, most commonly used in Mazda vehicles. Can this be the super car to rejuvenate Mazda's reputation, or com-pletely end up as a bomb shell that we'll see produced and barely sold? Here are some concept pictures we found. Which would be your favorite?

ON October 7, GMA Network presented a new drama that combines romance and fantasy with "Ang Lihim ni Annasandra" which pre-miered on the Network’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV.

It described every woman’s journey in finding true love, while allowing her secrets to remain a mystery, because like her secret, every woman is a mystery.

The original drama series was topbilled by Kapuso leading lady Andrea Torres as the alluring but street-smart market vendor An-nasandra, a loving daughter whose only wish is to provide the needs of her parents.

Playing opposite her is sought-after actor-host Mikael Daez as William Benitez, a rich and handsome man who works as a marketing department head for their family business (a surgicenter). William eventually falls for An-nasandra without knowing her secret. This is the third team-up of Andrea Torres and Mikael Daez, following Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga and With A Smile.

Fast-rising actor Pancho Magno is Enrico, the hunky porter who is secretly in love with Annasandra.

Rochelle Pangilinan played Esmeralda, the mysterious mountain-dweller who cursed Annasandra to become an awok. Esmeralda herself is an awok. When Annasandra’s father Carlos shot and killed Elena, her daughter;

Esmeralda cursed the human Annasandra to be an awok.

Keeping the real identity of Annasandra a secret to protect her from being hurt and hurting other people, Glydel Mercado played Belinda Vergara, the simple and loving mother of Annasandra. Emilio Garcia is Carlos Vergara, the loving father of Annasandra who inadver-tently brought the curse upon his daughter.

Ma. Isabel Lopez is Rosario, an “awok” and the mother of Esmeralda. Arthur Solinap is Kenneth, the doctor best friend of William. Joyce Burton is Hazel Benitez, the ex-beauty queen socialite mother of William; and Cris Villonco as Lorraine Armada, the beautiful surgicenter model who will do anything just to win William.

Completing the cast are Gab de Leon as Jimmy, the confidant of Enrico; and Erika Padilla as Becca, the bubbly and cheerful best friend of Annasandra.

In "Ang Lihim Ni Annasandra", twist of events led Annasandra to be cursed. From her human form, she transforms into an “awok” when dusk sets in. Her parents keep her real identity a secret to protect Annasandra from being misjudged, from being harmed and from harming other people.

Will Annasandra’s life ever be normal? Will she ever find true love and happiness despite her secret?

MANILA – High-flying Filipino teenager Kobe Paras first became famous for his abil-ity to dunk, but according to his coach at the Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, he has blossomed into a more complete basketball player now.

"Most people know him for his dunking," Paras' coach William Middlebrooks told Eric Sondheimer of the LA Times. "But he can shoot the three, (he) dribbles, passes."

"So he's pretty highly skilled," he said.Paras first drew attention when he sailed

past LeBron James for a slam dunk during the NBA superstar's visit to Manila last year. He then won the Slam Dunk contest of the FIBA 3x3 Under-18 tournament by flying over a teammate seated on a motorcycle.

Since then, the former La Salle Greenhills standout has moved to Los Angeles, where he now plays for the Cathedral High School and recently committed to play collegiate basketball to UCLA.

"He's adapting to the style of play in Ameri-ca," Middlebrooks said of Paras. "It's different, he said, from where he came from."

In an interview with ABS-CBN North Amer-ica, Middlebrooks said Paras has improved considerably since he got to Los Angeles. abs-

HEAT VS COLDFirst, let’s go over what types of musculoskeletal injuries or sof t tissue injuries

you can experience at work or during spor ts. Here are some examples of common injuries that can happen at work and during spor ts.

These are just examples of injuries that you may have experienced before. The only dif ference is that the injuries at work can be overuse injuries whereas the injuries during spor ts are sudden acute. However, overuse and acute injuries can happen to anyone at any time.

When a person experiences an injury, the body will respond to i t with swelling, more blood flow, dif ferent chemicals and cells will suppor t the injured area. Some of you might remember the acronym we use for pain self-management, R.I.C.E. This is used to help with immediate sof t tissue injuries or inflammation. R- rest, I- ice, C-compression and E-elevation. This applies to any sof t tissue or musculoskeletal injuries.

The goal during the acute stages of pain/injury, is to lower the blood flow to the injured area. Ice will help with vasoconstriction of the blood vessels slowing down the blood flow. Elevation will help with re-directing the blood to the area to assist with decreasing inflammation and swelling. There are dif ferent parameters when applying ice. It will depend on the size of the injury and the type of ice compress you are using. Apply ice 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day for 2-3 days.

For applying heat, the goal is to bring blood flow to the area to assist with sof t tissue healing. That is why applying heat or get ting a massage right af ter an injury and during the acute phase is not advisable. Due to increase of blood flow and inflam-mation to the injured area, heat is not the best thing for the injury.

However, af ter 72 hours when the injur y now feels tight and stif f, i t is then safe to apply heat to the injured area. Af ter the

Injuries that can happen at work Injuries that can happen during sports

- Wrists tendonitis - Rolled ankle (ligament tear)- Long head of biceps tendonitis - Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear (kne e)- Rotator cuf f muscle strain/tendonitis - Hyper ex tension of the thumb or big toes (ligament/capsule damage)- Low back muscle pain - Muscular strain (tear in the muscles, abdomen, quads, calves, back)- Neck muscular strain - Achilles tendon ruptur e

IF you had a musculoskeletal injury before, you probably had your own self-man-agement for your aches and pain. But when do we apply heat or ice? Patients I see in the clinic of ten wonder what and when to apply these modali ties.

ice application, swelling will decrease and the injury will star t healing but will form scar tissues. When this happens, heat will come in and help align all the proper tissues and muscles on i ts own alignment. Apply heat 10-15 minutes once a day until injury is healed. Depending on the type of heating you use, you can apply i t longer than 15 minutes.

I know we all experience some aches and pain especially now that we are get ting older. I defini tely feel more aches and pain especially af ter a basketball game or af ter my skipping workout sessions. My knees are achy, sore and walking with a limp sometimes. Well, here is your home program. If you have an injur y that happened years ago but the pain comes back af ter play-ing spor ts, ice your injuries all the time af ter the end of the day or af ter you exercise. The nex t day, if you are feel-ing sore and stif f apply heat so that you can move and do your daily routine.

These self-management rehabili tation techniques will only work if you apply ice or heat regularly when you feel pain. If you skip the icing session, you will feel more sore for 2-3 days instead of feeling fine the nex t day.

HOROSCOPEARIES (March 21-April 19): Your energy is practically making you turn cartwheels and spell out the letters of your home team. It?s a great time to start any new projects, especially those that involve home improvement. Your home is your castle, of course, and you’re the first to admit that you could use some new arrangements. Be sure to get your ideas approved before you get started!TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Get back to nature, or try some new kind of community service. You could also combine them by volunteering to help clean up a park or wilderness area, or beautifying your neighborhood by planting a few trees. Involve your friends and encourage coworkers to get behind these activities. You’ve got the gift of persuasion now, and you can influence folks to do their best.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You need to get a clearer idea of what you need so you can make it happen. The thing is, today isn’t exactly conducive to picking up on what’s really going on in your heart. That may actually be to your advantage - so try to spend your time thinking about what you don’t need, or can’t stand in your life any longer. In a bit, you should be able to visualize what you really want. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now is the time to give voice to your true desires, because they can be met if you speak up now. The universe is sure to get right back to you when you identify your goals, so be sure you know what you’re talking about! Then you can speak up to anyone handy - you never know who might be the one who can get you what you need, so you need to ensure that your message spreads far and wide.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You need to get out on the town, but your energy is set up to give you a good time only if you can keep things a bit low-key. That may not be your go-to style, but keeping things modest should sound pretty appealing right now, so instead of a crazy night at a nightclub, gather your people for a quiet night of comfort food and great conversation. The good times can come to you!VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You’ve learned long ago that putting off the inevitable nearly always leads to unnecessary stress. Keep that in mind as you take on any and all tasks or responsibilities that have been piled up over the past few days. It’s time to handle it all as quickly as you can. The people around you are inspired to put their own affairs in order instead of waiting until the last second.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): How much dust is covering your memorabilia? Do you have books and bills piled all over the place in no special order? That could explain your sour mood. Lift your spirits by making your living and work spaces easier to deal with. It’s shocking how much better you can feel when your room, car and desk are easy on the eyes. After you take care of these little pieces, the big picture should be much clearer.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Forgiveness doesn’t always come naturally to you. You’re unfailingly loyal to your people, but you’re also hard as stone to those who have done you wrong, even inadvertently. In the long run, who gets anything out of a grudge? Is the pain you’re clinging to worthwhile? Let go of today’s grievance a bit and see what comes next. You might decide to let go of a lot more!SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You need to feel connected to something bigger than your own mind. Now you’re feeling an unmistakable pull toward the spiritual side of life, while your vital energy pushes you in the same direction. The mysteries of life are tremendous, and meditation on life’s larger issues helps make your time here much sweeter and more fulfilling. Now is the time to tackle big, important topics.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): While it’s tempting to give as good as you’ve gotten lately, you need to think twice before stoop-ing to a certain someone’s level. If they cut in line, you need to firmly (but politely) take your place back instead of resorting to an equally rude maneuver in order to make a point. Remember your long-range goals instead of focusing on revenge, and you should find that things work out right.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Reflection could just hold you back today, because every question you ask could just inspire a million new questions. Stop chasing your tail - it just wastes your time and mental energy. Get cozy, calm down and listen to your heart. Listen to your gut and make that big decision. You can’t err too badly if you pay close attention to what your deeper self is trying to tell you.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Romantic matters are easy to talk about now. Splendidly sensitive people like you are already quite in touch with others’ vibes, but for now, your powers of intuition are charged up even more than usual. of our province in every way.I talked about how I wanted

to expand our relationship beyond immigration and how important that issue is to me. Building bridges between politi-cians, bureaucrats, the private sector and others in order to promote a relationship between our two countries that goes beyond immigration is very important.

With Canada and other nations focusing on trade in Asia, the Philippines is far too often being overlooked by our country. I have consistently raised the issue of trade with the Philippines.

On September 30, 2014 while debating Canada’s trade deal with South Korea, I stated in the House of Commons in Ot-

tawa: “What about other Asian countries? A few years ago, I would have been standing in my place and talking about the Philippines. The Philippines is a beautiful, wonderful country. Today, we continue to be very dependent on the Philippines for immigration. Tens of thou-sands of people come to Canada from the Philippines every year and we have benefited im-mensely, economically, socially and more, because of immigra-tion from the Philippines. Why not take advantage of this re-lationship with the Philippines and look at other ways, outside of immigration, to expand rela-tions between the Philippines and Canada? We should look at trade. There is so much more that we could be doing on the trade file and again we see the government falling short on a

number of occasions.”The ambassador and I talked

a lot about post secondary edu-cation and how we both believe that there is so much room for growth in that area. In a future article, I would like to expand on that issue in much more detail.

We talked about tourism and how in many ways that has greatest potential for short term success that could lead to even more opportunities well into the future. The Ambassador’s Winter tour to the Philippines will be continuing with the next one planned for January 2015.

I really enjoyed my talk with Ambassador Garcia and she reinforced my determination to be a part in whatever way I can at making our two great nations even better and stronger countries in the future. (www.mpkevin.ca)

spirit we will never be truly thankful for all that God has given us.

Rudyard Kipling was a great writer and poet. Unlike many old writers, Kipling was one of the few who had opportunity to enjoy his success while he lived. He also made a great deal of money at his trade.

One time a newspaper re-porter came up to him and said, "Mr. Kipling, I just read that somebody calculated that the money you make from your writ-ings amounts to over a hundred dollars a word; Mr. Kipling raised

his eyebrows and said, "Really, I certainly wasn’t aware of that."

The reporter cynically reached down into his pocket and pulled out a one hundred dollar bill and gave it to Kipling and said, "Here’s a hundred dollar bill, Mr. Kipling. Now, you give me one of your hundred dollar words." Mr. Kipling looked at that hundred dollar bill for a moment, took it and folded it up and put it in his pocket and said, "Thanks."

He’s right! The word thanks is certainly a hundred dollar word. In fact, I would say it is more like a million dollar word. It’s one word that is too seldom heard and too rarely spoken and too often forgotten. If we would all

adopt an attitude of thanksgiving into our lives - our lives would be changed.

If any nation ought to be thankful to God and grateful for his goodness, it ought to be Canada. If any people in Canada ought to be thankful to God and grateful for his goodness, it ought to be Christians.

MANILA (Oct. 15)– Freddie Roach has taken a 180-degree turn and is now allowing Manny Pacquiao to see action in the Kia Sorentos’ PBA debut on Sunday, October 19.

Veteran scribe Eddie Alinea of Philboxing.com, who is cov-ering Pacquiao’s training camp in General Santos City, broke the news about Roach giving his prized ward the green light to play in the PBA opener. The bespectacled trainer initially prohibited Pacquiao from suiting up for Kia – which lists him as playing coach – throughout the duration of training for his fight with American Chris Algieri on November 23 in Macau.

But Roach has had a change of heart, with the help of Pac-quiao’s insistence. “Yeah, he asked my permission to play in the opening day for the fans, so I told him I'll allow him to see action for only one minute," the multi-titled cornerman told Alinea.

And if Pacquiao exceeds the one-minute limit? "Well, I myself will take him out. I'm coming with him to Manila, sit on the team bench and act as the head coach with him as my assistant,” Roach jokingly said. “Nah, of course he can play as long as he wishes, if that's what it will take to make the fans happy,” he continued. – Dino Maragay

MANILA (October 15) - Heart Evangelista’s parents will not attend her wedding with Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

“Although binigay nila ‘yong bless-ing na magpakasal, hindi raw talaga nila kayang makita akong magpak-asal,” she explained. “So magkikita na lang kami pagbalik ko ng Manila. Pero sa kasal [hindi]. Okay lang rin siguro kung nahihirapan sila, ako lang din siguro kakaaintindi no’n. Okay lang din sa akin.”

Meanwhile, the Kapuso actress-host also said that the issue with their wed-ding’s venue has been settled.

It could be recalled that TV host Cesca Litton claimed that her wedding in Balesin Island Club was bumped off to give way to the Heart-Chiz wedding on February 15.

“Oo nagkaro’n ng konting problema but naayos naman,” she said.

She then explained again their side in the issue.

“Problema sa kabilang party kasi parang no’ng time na ‘yon nagkaro’n kami ng issue, bump-off or something, but hindi pa kami nagre-reserve ng date sa Balesin. But since we’re very

MANILA - Good news for “CharDawn” fans.

More than two years after “Walang Hanggan,” Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta are set to work together again in a TV series, according to the actress in an interview on Monday.

Zulueta confirmed the project on the sidelines Metro Magazine’s fashion show celebrating the works of designer Cary Santiago at Edsa Shangri-La Ma-nila.

“Soon, we will start working. I miss working. I’ve been on a break for three months na, eh. It’s going to be with Richard, pero as far as the cast is concerned, ‘di ko pa alam,” she said.

In October 2013,

ABS-CBN announced a TV series with the working title “You’re My Home,” which was to star Gomez and Zulueta. It was supposed to premiere in January this year, but has since been shelved, according to cast member Iza Calzado.

A former real-life couple and con-sidered one of the most sought-after tandems in the ‘90s, Zulueta and Gomez were reunited in ABS-CBN’s “Walang Hanggan,” which concluded in October 2012.

But until the romance movie “She’s Dating the Gangster” early this year, wherein they portrayed the adult ver-sions of lead stars Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, the two went on to star in separate projects. abs-cbnnews.com

GMA Network’s groundbreaking program My Husband’s Lover (MHL) is the only drama series from the Phil-ippines nominated in the telenovela category of the 42nd International Emmy Awards. MHL will be competing alongside entries from Portugal, Brazil, and Canada.

Topbilled by Dennis Trillo, Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana, MHL de-fied all conventions of traditional drama soaps and definitely captured local Fili-pino audiences.

The series drew viewers to understand that love is not defined by sexual preference - no matter how different it is from the love we all know - it could still be equally pure, selfless and true.

It’s worldwide debut on GMA Pinoy TV, the Net-work’s flagship international channel, in 2013 further bol-stered its popularity, garner-ing international acclaim for the program. As a testament to the show’s lasting success,

the MHL US Concert Tour became an international sensation which attracted thousands of fans from all over the United States.

The Emmy recognition solidifies GMA’s commitment in creating pro-grams, which are innovative and at par with international standards.

From the original concept of Suzette Doctolero and with the help of creative director Jun Lana, MHL was under the direction of Dominic Zapata.

The parishioners of St. Edward’s Church had successfully celebrated the two-day festivities prepared for the feast day of its patron saint, St. Edward the Confessor, which was held on October 11 and 12, 2014. A novena prayer was also held in nine consecutive days prior to the October 12th feast day before having the 5:30pm weekday masses that focused on the life and virtues of St. Edward and with the general prayer intention of the life and health of the parish.

On this weekend celebration, the Stewardship Renewal Ministry Fair was also held that showcased the various parish ministries and volunteer services of its community members. Each min-istry had their respective booths in the

parish hall that shared their activities and answered questions for those who were interested in joining their organi-zation. Each ministry also prepared a special song, dance and video presenta-tions to share their talents and entertain visitors who came after attending the Sunday masses. There were refresh-ments and foods served, raffle prizes drawn, games played, and giveaways and souvenirs given.

Further, the other two highlights of the feast day were the Mini Concert col-laborated by the five mass choirs at St. Edward’s church and the Living Rosary in line with the October month dedicat-ed to the Most Holy Rosary of Our Lady of the Rosary. The celebration ended on the Sunday’s 7:30pm holy mass.

YOU’VE probably heard people talk about the need to have a balanced por t folio – but what does this mean

and why should you pay at tention? A balanced por t folio is one that contains dif fer-

ent t ypes of investment wi th varying levels of risk. The idea is to get a good overall return by achieving a “balance” between higher risk/higher return and lower risk/ lower return investments.

Financial advisors of ten recommend guaran-

teed investment products as an impor tant par t of a balanced por t folio. Because a por tion of your investment is guaranteed, the risk is minimal. But the trade-of f is that these investments tend to pay

a lower rate of return. There are two main t ypes of

guaranteed investment products: · Guaranteed Investment Cer-

tificates (GICs) – available through most financial insti tutions, GICs pay a set rate of interest for a set period of time. At the end of this period, the interest payments and the amount of money you originally invested is repaid to you.

· Accumulation Annui ties (AAs) – this t ype of

guaranteed investment is only of fered by insurance companies. AAs are similar to GICs but they have unique features that may of fer ex tra advantages. If you die, the amount in the plan, plus interest is

usually paid directly and quickly to your beneficiar y. This avoids the trouble and expense of estate and probate fees. Also, in many cases, the assets in the plan may be protected from credi tors in the event of an unexpected lawsui t or bankruptcy.

As you go about building your

investment por t folio, ask yourself what level of risk you are prepared to take -- low, medium or high -- and

how long do you want to invest? Based on your answers, I am able to help you decide where to put your money to get the balance of risk vs. reward that works for you.
