Friends of Boggart Hole Clough (FoBHC), before 2015 named Boggart Hole Clough Community Action Trust (BHCCAT), was founded in 2000.

Angel Hill War Memorial a symbol of yearning for an end to wars, for world peace.

98 years ago today, 11th November 1918, the Armistice of Compiegne was signed stopping hostilities on the Western Front, thus ending the

1st World War, fighting on the Eastern Front having been halted by the Russian Revolution at the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, 3rd March 1918.

The memorial is located in the north west of the Clough near Charlestown Road. A bronze sculpture stands on an 18-

foot high pillar of sandstone blocks. Although the sculpture officially depicts Winged Victory with olive branch in

raised left hand & laurel wreath in right hand, the sculpture is known locally, & surely more appropriately, as the

Angel on the Hill. Three sides of the pillar each have a bronze plaque inscribed with the names of local people killed

in the 2 world wars, 320 names in total – please see pages 3 to 5 below. Inscribed into the pillar is the following:

TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BLACKLEY

WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919

ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF BLACKLEY

UNVEILED MAY 28TH 1921

IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND GREAT WAR 1939 - 1945

THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE

Assimilating the lessons of history - stopping capitalism’s drive towards a nuclear 3rd World War.

Imperial War Museum (IWM) website - iwm.org.uk – 20.10.2016: “.. information held by IWM’s War Memorials Register for

this memorial .. Louis Frederick Roslyn, sculptor .. Winged Victory surmounting a tall pedestal. The whole stands on a broad

stone base with pillars at the four corners on which are placed four smaller figures holding emblems of the Army, Navy, Air

Force and Nursing Services. These figures are now missing .. The four small figures were lost, reason unknown .. First World

War .. Total names on memorial .. Died: 204 .. Second World War .. Total names on memorial .. Died: 0 ..”

The four small figures mentioned above as now missing seem to have been missing for several decades. The IWM’s number of

Total names on memorial quoted above are incorrect - 320 people are listed, see pages 3 to 5 below.

Two bronze plaques were stolen in 2010, subsequently remade & replaced – see Minutes 5.10.2010 AGM & Executive Committee Open

Meeting, BHCCAT, 27.6.2012, which can be seen on our website.

Photos - page 1: PFM, 25.10.2016; page 2: PFM, 1.10.2016; page 3: PFM, 3.2.2007; page 4: Paul McCrystal, 27.7.2013; page 5: Paul McCrystal, 15.10.2016.

The photo above shows the 1st World War dates inscribed on the memorial are 1914 – 1919 rather than the usual 1918. This

anomaly perhaps deliberate to include those dying of wounds soon after the war ended. The cut-off date could no doubt

have been extended indefinitely onwards from 1919, many war veterans suffering life-long trauma, dying prematurely.

Keir Hardie (1856 - 1915), first socialist Member of Parliament (elected 1892, West Ham South constituency in London’s

East End) & first leader of the Labour Party (founded 1900), spoke at mass meetings in the Clough.

Boggart Hole Clough & the 1896 Campaign for Free Speech, FoBHC, 24.8.2016 - document on our website, about Keir

Hardie among others.

“A pacifist, Hardie was appalled by the First World War & along with socialists in other countries he tried to organize an

international general strike to stop the war ..” – Wikipedia, 23.10.2016.

The war to end all wars, 1st World War catchphrase. Simple FoBHC graphic on this theme -
