Shaping Future Leaders

This school wide event was part of a nation wide initiative called “Kids Voting USA”. A mock election was held, with every child in the school participating in voting for

the candidate of their choice. This event, featuring the gifted students as poll workers, and representatives from local government as guests, followed a six week

study on the electoral process and major political parties. The gifted students actually researched the candidates and campaigned for their choice. The student

body voted, after being exposed to mini-lessons, and campaign strategies presented by the gifted classes on the morning announcements and during lunch (for several

days). Guests to the campus included Commissioner Teresa Jacobs of Orange County (pictured above), and Mayor Scott Vandergrift of Ocoee, Florida.

It IS Rocket Science!

Rocket Day quickly became a favorite event school wide! The Gifted Program hosted this big day, each spring, after learning about aerodynamics, trajectory, and many other areas of aerospace.

Guest teachers were invited to lecture in their areas of expertise, during a 4 week unit of study.

Each spring , the mayor, the fire department and many other dignitaries joined Citrus Elementary School’s

festivities! Each student in the program built, decorated and launched their own model rocket. As the students

progressed in the program, their rockets and curriculum became increasingly difficult. By our third launch, the

students were able to accurately measure windage and set the trajectory for their rocket to return to earth within the

range of the school’s soccer field!

Parent and Community Involvement

Parent and community involvement is essential to any school in preparing

students for real world applications of learning. Pictured here are my gifted

students, along with our town’s mayor, fire department, military personal and

countless parent volunteers at our annual

model rocket launch.

personal computer during “Teach In”, a community wide event inviting

members of the community to act as honorary teachers in public schools.
