AngelsRecently, the Marian Cenacle Group of the Contemplative ministry of our parish organized a talk on the angels and invited one of the few real experts on angels. He is Fr. Winston Cabading, O.P., a Dominican priest and the secretary general of UST. He is a professor of Theology at the UST Central Seminary and a member of the official team of exorcists of the Archdiocese of Manila. Before an overflowing audience at our parish center, he cited teachings and beliefs on angels and identified his basis and sources, and whether they are based on dogma, doctrine, traditions and teachings of the early Fathers, Doctors of the Church, revelations made to saints, Papal dissertations, teachings of the Magisterium etc. In other words, he made it clear that his talk was not drawn from his own conclusions but from the teachings/catechism of the Catholic Church. Fr. Winston divided his talk into 2 parts: The Good Angels and the Fallen Angels (demons and unclean spirits). He starts by saying that the reality of human greatness and the tragedy of human misery in the face of death cannot be fully grasped without the understanding of the world of spirits – the angels. God created angels from the beginning of time and being spirits, they have no end. There is a hierarchy of angels in heaven wherein the highest angel minister to the Most High and these are the seraphims, cherubims and thrones. There are those who implement the blessings of God given to the material world and enable God’s will be present to mankind; these are the principalities, the archangels and the angels. St. Michael the archangel is chief of the heavenly hosts. Angels after the archangels are closest to mankind. God has assigned to each one a guardian angel from the moment of conception and stays with him to the end of his earthly life. At death, it is they who bring us to God for judgment; whether they will accompany us to purgatory to console and to pray for us, or lead us happily to heaven or to separate from us sadly if the judgment is of eternal damnation. Our angels respect our free will but when they are invoked, they come to our aid

immediately. If we fall into sin, they inspire us to repentance. They protect man and expel demons that seek to destroy a child of God. We have only to call them. The prayer to our guardian angel, taught to us in childhood, must always be prayed every morning and before we go to bed. The prayer to St. Michael by Pope Leo XIII is very powerful. We may not ask the angels for their names.; only God can reveal it to us. We must be very careful in guarding ourselves from deceptions regarding devotions to the angels. Many deceptive New Age practices have come out naming them or asking for their names or an angel’s revelation that he is St. Michael or a seraphim. There are only two kinds of spirits - the good spirits or the faithful angels, and the bad spirits or the fallen angels. These are the demons that were thrown to earth after their fall and we know them as elementals. God warns us against pagan practices and

their idols that are in reality the evil spirits who are raring to be worshipped like God. We communicate with the good angels through prayer and never through techniques or incantations, never through spirit questing, mediumship, witchcraft or any of those New Age pagan practices resorted to by many. Who comes when these spirits are invoked? The devil disguised as a loved one, a relative, an angel of light or even Sto. Nino or the Blessed Mother. The story of the fall of the angels shows the great love God has for man, even above the angels. Lucifer assumed that because of his angelic nature – closer to the nature of God – he should be the most eminent of all God’s creatures. But instead he saw that God gave this eminence to a woman (Mary) and man (Jesus). The incarnation was central to God’s plan in the creation. Lucifer’s attitude toward the incarnation was: Non Serviam. He rejected the incarnation. He sinned against Man (Jesus) because he saw himself far superior to Man (Jesus) and therefore more fitting of “divinization.” And so Lucifer declares: “I will not serve. (He will not serve the God-Man.) Fallen angels have only one intention for man – to murder him by seducing him to pride and disobedience, which leads to sin and death. Fr. Winston cited examples of the devil’s trickery which he has seen and experienced during rites of exorcism that he performed and how the devil humiliates man by making a possessed person growl and crawl like an animal. Fallen angels battle against man’s salvation. They torture men on earth but they torture those they have won over much more terribly in hell. Fallen angels are tortured by the knowledge that they cannot attain beatitude, their power is limited by Divine governance, and that despite their efforts to bring men to hell, these men may yet go to heaven. Fr. Winston says the devil is very active today, but we have our guardian angels and the saints and Our Blessed Mother to help us. The devil especially hates man because God loves us so much that He gave His only Son to ransom us from

Introduction: Last month we have many cases of food poisoning in the various parts of the country; from Surigao, Caloocan, Calamba. The victims are mostly public school children. A television ad coming from the DOH (also doubling as media exposure of the department head) warns the public to be extra careful in their eating habits foremost of which is to maintain the cleanliness of hands as they are the conduits by which the bacteria enters into our system. We need to maintain our hygiene to prevent unnecessary disease. Of course no one can argue with that common sense reminder, because it is almost second nature for all of us to observe cleanliness. We have a saying cleanliness is next to Godliness.

GOSPEL: The Gospel today is the interchange of Jesus and the Pharisees regarding ritual purity which is an essential dimension of Pharisaic religion. It is an effort to claim Jewish identity in a world happier with polytheistic style. The Pharisees argued that the practice of eating with undefiled hands was an obligation imposed not only on the Temple only but also on all Jewish people who sought to be the holy people they are called to be. To heed the stipulation of the oral law like this was not to escape into trivialities but to demonstrate how seriously the law of God has to be taken. Since Jesus is obviously a religious teacher, why do his disciples not take seriously the tradition of the elders, which is intended as a fence around the law to protect it? Why do they avoid this concern, which is so characteristically Jewish? 1. Jesus’ first response was an attack on the notion that the laws of God needs

to be protected by the traditions of the elders. The Pharisees are making void the word of God through their tradition. The elevation of the oral law to a place of parity alongside the Torah ultimately undercuts. 2. The second response of Jesus, however is even more substantive. “There is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but things that come out are what defile.” The whole notion of ritual purity or holiness based on food laws is undermined in one precise statement. What matters is the heart, the seat of the will where decisions are made about one’s neighbor. The condition of the heart, whether debased or pure, is far more critical that the food one eats or whether one attends to the washing of the hands.3. The broader context in which this interchange occurs presents an interesting backdrop. On the one hand, there are the two generous feedings of the multitude and an extravagant summary of Jesus healing in and around Gennesaret. On the other hand it is followed by the persistent faith of the gentile woman who asks only for crumbs and the restoration of hearing and speech of a deaf man living in a gentile area of Decapolis. These events pose a sharp contrast to the restrictive issue of the washing of hands before eating. (W.Brueggmann, et al.)

WORD: There is a need to distinguish between the will of God and his commandments and the oral traditions. We have many of them, especially in the matters of worship and liturgy. A concrete example would be the reception of the Eucharist. Should we receive it in our hands or through our mouth? How long should our exposition and benediction be? And yet these traditions can get into the way of loving relationships among parishioners.

The criticisms of Jesus against unnecessary emphasis on oral traditions liberates us from scrupulosity of conscience and the burden of guilty conscience. Many of what we considered sinful and therefore matters for confession are in fact non compliance with traditions. For example not observing fast before communion. Jesus wants us to forsake scrupulosity about good and evil and rediscover unity with the word of God. Instead of distinguishing between good and evil and passing judgments on man’s

actions we should be trying to know God himself and be known by him. The tragedy of the Pharisees is that of all of us pretend to a knowledge outside its compass. We have it whenever people are judged on the basis of a knowledge of good and evil that ignores God. Living in conformity with God’s will sets him free from all casuistry about good and evil and made us closer to the sinner. We examine our conscience not so much to analyze the good and the evil but whether in our hearts we find the word of God. The cure of the daughter of the Syro-Phoenician woman and the restoration of the hearing and speech of the man from Decapolis depict the gracious way God operates. Neither character knows much about the ritual purity or tradition of the elders, but both know about the divine grace that made them whole. Jesus is not only patching up the old to make it more serviceable. He inaugurates something entirely new.

A Host on eBay!Many Filipinos receive Communion in the hand. Is this practice right or wrong? If we look at history, the apostles took the unleavened bread in their hands during the Last Supper. Communion in the hand was the custom until around the 10th century. By the year 1000, Communion on the tongue was universal and was the only way until after Vatican Council II (1965). Communion in the hand was approved as an alternative; but it did not replace the customary Communion on the tongue. A survey conducted by Pope Paul VI (in the late 1960s) showed the majority of bishops favoring Communion on the tongue which was why it remained in force. Sacrilege against a sacred host is easier when Communion is in the hand. There are heartbreaking stories of a host reportedly received at a papal Mass in 1998 that was put up for sale on eBay in 2005 (but later withdrawn by the

In our own parish, a yaya was seen getting a consecrated host and feeding it to a toddler. The practice of Communion in the hand also has the risk of host fragments breaking off and falling to the ground or small particles remaining on the hands. St. John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, and many cardinals do not promote Communion in the hand, citing reasons of abuse and disrespect. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her sisters have no qualms about touching Christ in the guise of the poor. They chose, however, not to touch Him in his real presence in the Blessed Sacrament. The two ways of receiving communion can take place during Mass. What is important is that we remember that Communion is a personal encounter with Jesus in the sacrament, that the small host is not an ordinary bread or another religious article, but is Jesus Himself. The right way to carry out the rite of communion in the hand:Standing in front of the communion minister, we stretch out both hands placing the cupped left palm on the right. Proclaiming “the Body of Christ,” to which we answer, “Amen,” the communion minister places the sacred host on the left palm. Stepping aside yet still facing the minister, we reverently transfer the host to our mouth with the right hand, and then walk away with joined hands in front of the breast.

His child with this girl he called “the son of my sin.” Hearing a sermon by Ambrose, the bishop of Milan 3 years ago and the tears and prayers of his mother finally bore fruit in Augustine’s being converted to the Catholic Faith and in his being baptized in 387 at the age of 32 by no less than Bishop Ambrose himself. Augustine’s son was also baptized at the same time. Augustine’s mother Monica was to be later canonized not only for giving her son the only Christian education he got but for her persistent prayers for his conversion. Determined to consecrate his life to God Augustine set off back to Africa. He turned his house into a monastic community devoted to contemplation and study. It is to this early monastic compound that the Augustinian Fathers trace their origin. The rules that Augustine wrote for them became the basis of future orders. His famous Rule of Saint Augustine, which became the basis for the constitutions of the Augustine Canons, the Augustine Friars, the Dominicans, the Ursulines and other religious orders. Augustine left a body of philosophical and theological doctrines called Augustinianism. It remained unchallenged as the orthodox teaching of the Church until the time of St. Thomas Aquinas. Two of Augustine’s numerous writings that rank among the world’s classics and are considered to be his masterpiece are the Confessions in 13 books and the other was The City of God in 22 books. While Augustine’s doctrines were those of St. Paul, his masterful reaffirmation and development of them made him probably the greatest influence next to St. Paul on the theology of the West both Catholic and Protestant. His influence was especially strong in the works of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Albert Magnus, Peter Lombard, the members of the Franciscan and Victorine schools and many others. As Bishop for 34 years, Augustine proved to be an excellent shepherd of his flock often brilliantly writing and eloquently speaking on behalf of the

poor, less fortunate, downtrodden and despised members of society. He lived an exemplary life in sanctity and poverty until his death in 430. Augustine was canonized a saint. His feast is celebrated on August 28, the day following the memorial to his mother.

“Look at our Daily Lives from a Spiritual Perspective.”

“In our world today, so many people feel lost and confused. We are all search for meaning in our lives.” These are the opening words of Fr. Phil Estrella for his Adult Lay Spirituality Talk. Though, he usually gives his talks over a weekend, he compressed it into a single day for the parishioners. It was a jampacked afternoon filled with wisdom for the spiritual life.

His talk draws from many of the spiritual masters in the

Church’s tradition. He says, “Mysticism in not just for a chosen few but for all. We each have to learn how to look at our daily lives from a spiritual perspective.” This teaching comes from the wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who teaches about discernment and St. Francis of Assisi, who sees God in every created thing. Fr. Phil wants to inspire a shift to a more mature faith. This means seeing our lives for what it is, and then responding to it in the right kind of way. The first step to this is to know what we our lives are like. He says, “No matter who you are, there are givens that we need to know about. Firstly, happiness does not last. Secondly, we all encounter disappointment. Finally, we all suffer loss, both in the things and people that we love.” This is a part of what it means to be human. In this valley of tears, we cannot avoid having these experiences. They are a part of our lives. Everyone goes through it. Fr. Phil goes on, “A mature faith is one that has moved away from asking God to remove these problems - or to remove the givens from our lives. Instead, a mature spirituality means making sense of these trials in the right kind of way. It is a matter of changing our perspective.” Borrowing from St. Ignatius, he says, “Sanctity then does not depend on removing these given from our lives, but making the right decisions in the face of these trials. Ignatius calls this discernment. How we look at the challenges, pray and think about them, and finally make a decision to act is the process of good discernment and the mark of a mature faith.” Finally, he says that we must always look to Jesus. He is the one who became human, not to take away suffering but to transform it. A big part of a mature spirituality is being able to see how Jesus’ experiences are connected to our own. Fr. death. Satan only seeks our destruction and we must never be deceived by the seeming benefits he baits us with. Let us not be complacent especially when everything seems to be going well in our lives. The battle of the angels is now brought down to earth. It is now the battle for souls. That is why to speak about the devil is not old fashioned or outdated or something of the imagination. We must be warned again. To win the battle we must know the enemy and his strategies. It is a reality and Jesus Himself warned us. By expelling them, He showed we must not co-exist with them. God has gifted us with intellect and free will to choose which side we want to be. He and all the good angels will always respect our choice. However, He has given us all the necessary weapons and help we need to recognize the devil and thus to reject him and his many deceptions, for the devil will never come to us as devils with all their monstrosity and hideous darkness. They come to us as spirits of light and beauty. But let us not be deceived! The faithful angels will play a major role at the end of the world; they will be the ones to execute God’s final judgment. By God’s gift of free will, the choice depends on us – which battle line shall we be?
