Let's discover Warsaw! GENERAL INFORMATION Warsaw is the hometown of FRYDERYK CHOPIN & MARIA SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE. Warsaw is the vast capital of Poland. Its widely varied architecture reflects the city's long, turbulent history , from Gothic churches & neoclassical palaces to Soviet -era blocks and modern skyscrapers. Destroyed nearly in 85 % during World War II , the capital was reborn like a phoenix from the ashes thanks to the efforts of the entire nation. After 44 years of the communist regime it was a place of revolutionary events initiated by the ‘Solidarity’ movement , which resulted in the Round Table talks, the first free elections and political transformation in Eastern Europe Today, the capital of Poland is a vibrant , dynamic and modern metropolis. The Mermaid The Mermaid is the symbol and the guardian of Warsaw. There are more than 100 all over Warsaw, but the most important ones are: Monument at the Old Town Square, on the bank of the Vistula River and near Karowa Street at the Markiewicz Flyover.

Walking the streets of the Old Town and New Town allows you to rest from the bustle of central city life. Atmospheric alleys, squares, and cosy cafés create a unique sense of history, and in the summer, the Old and New Town Squares become stages for musical and theatrical performances and open-air galleries.

Royal Castle - Built in the 15th century, this castle was a residence of Mazovian princes. Once the capital was moved from Krakow to Warsaw,

been renovated repeatedly and destroyed completely during World War II. It was rebuilt between 1971-1988 using castle remains and rubble.

Łazienki Królewskie Park-Palace Complex - It is a Palace-Garden complex which includes a park (76 hectares) with wild animals and numerous historical objects. In the 18th century it became the most beautiful area in Warsaw and one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Wilanów Park-Palace Complex- It is one of the most precious monuments of Polish Baroque. Built for King Jan III Sobieski at the end of the 17th century, it represents an unusual combination of a traditional Polish court with an Italian rural villa and a French chateau.

Palace of Culture and Science - Completed in 1955 as a ‘gift from the Soviet people’, it represents Socialist Realist architecture. It is the tallest building in Poland with an excellent panoramic view of the city.. It is a cultural centre with theatres, museums, a cinema and a concert hall.

Warsaw Rising Museum - Opened in 2004, on the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the museum pays tribute to the people who fought and died for their country’s independence. It used to be a tramway power station, now it is a museum. POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews - It tells the 1000-year-long history of Poles and Jews. There is a symbolic architecture & an extraordinary exhibition. Located in the centre of the former Jewish district and the place of the most intense battles of the Ghetto Uprising in 1943.  National Museum - The museum contains a rich collection of exhibits from antiquity to modern times. It was built in the inter-war period. During the World War II it secretly stored some of the Royal Castle treasures. It organizes numerous temporary exhibitions presenting art from all over the world.

Copernicus Science Centre- A real paradise for explorers, it is one of the largest and most modern science centres in Europe. 450 interactive exhibitions in 6 different galleries. Everyone can discover nature’s mysteries, conduct experiments and have fun!

National Stadium - The National Stadium in Warsaw was built for the European Football Championship UEFA EURO 2012. It is located close to the Old Town and city centre. Resembling a gigantic red and white basket, it is where important football matches, concerts and other big events take place.

The Vistula - It is a “district” of entertainment and with beaches, forest with rare species of birds, walking boulevards and bars & clubs. The Multimedia Fountain Park is the coolest place, a charming spot close to the Old Town and Vistula River. The Vistula is the longest river in Poland. It begins at Barania and runs into the Baltic Sea.

Places related to Fryderyk Chopin - Fryderyk Chopin is the best known resident of Warsaw. He spent the first 20 years of his life in the city. He studied music and gave his first concerts. There are many places which are a homage paid to his talent and the world’s largest collection.
