In Loving Memory

Heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being, we praise and glorify Your Holy Name for these faithful servants whom we love but see no longer. We thank You for their friendship and the strength and peace they brought; for the courage and confidence they

placed in You, that shone through their lives. Grant to us who are still in our pilgrimage, and who walk as yet by faith, that Your Holy Spirit may lead us in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A.C.W. President’s Report

Respectfully submitted,Maureen Sills

President, Diocese of Ontario A.C.W.

Welcome to the 48th Annual Meeting of the Diocese of Ontario A.C.W. at Christ Church Cataraqui, Kingston.

I am thankful for your support in giving me the pleasure to attend the National A.C.W. Conference in Saskatoon in October. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and prayer that I was able to share with delegates from across Canada (see my conference report).

We held our first Diocesan Retreat on Sept. 22nd – 23th 2014 that was open to all A.C.W. members. We had a few new attendees who enjoyed their time and said that they would come back again. This year it will be held on Sept. 21st and 22nd at the Providence Spirituality Centre. The cost is $85 which includes a single room and all meals. I encourage all members to attend.

I was able to attend all three Regional meetings in Oct-ber. All Regional meetings were well attended. The guest speakers chosen for each meeting were very interesting and brought informative topics to the meeting. Thanks to each Regional President and their host churches for making these events successful. I look forward to meeting you again this October.

With your support, our Diocesan A.C.W. provides out-reach to our community, country and the world. We con-tinue to support the New Life Girls Home, Camp Hyanto, P.W.R.D.F., Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund. Our thank offering went to CanAssist African Relief Trust, National Service Dogs and Three Oaks Second Stage Housing in Belleville.

Barbara Bonnard has resigned as our Supply Cupboard Convener and we no longer have a Supply Cupboard. I would like to thank Barbara for all her hard work in sorting and delivering parcels and Christmas hampers to various community groups in Kingston and the surround-ing area. Barbara, it was a job well done!

It was a pleasure to award A.C.W. pins and certificates to well-deserved members for their dedication and hard work.

Christ Church Cataraqui – Mildred Flindall and Mari-on Carleton

St. Paul’s Sydenham – Joyce Hill

St. John’s Madoc – Lynn Hall

St. John the Baptist, Elizabethtown – Judy Hodgkinson

We appreciate all the support that we receive from Bishop Michael Oulton. Thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to attend our Annual meeting as well as our Regional meetings. We wish Rev. Jeanie and Bishop Michael continued good health.

I would like to offer my thanks to the ladies of the Dioc-esan Executive for your support this past year. We have had another busy year but I believe with God’s help we have been able to achieve a lot.

Each and every one of you has been an inspiration to me. Each month we hear of the accomplishment of each A.C.W. throughout the Diocese. You have given much support to your churches and communities. Congratula-tions to all of you.

On behalf of the Diocesan Executive, we would like to thank the Christ Church Cataraqui A.C.W. for your hospi-tality and for hosting our annual meeting. We appreciate your dedication and hard work.

National A.C.W. ConferenceSept. 25 – 28, 2014

Saskatoon, SaskatchewanTheme: Bread of Life

What an inspiring National Conference that I attended in Saskatoon! I arrived on Thursday, Sept. 25th and was met at the airport by Rev.

Howard Green and his wife, Jean. After lunch at their home, I was driven to Queen’s House and Retreat Centre where our conference was held.

On Thursday evening, we travelled to the Cathedral and attended Eucharist with Archbishop Fred Hiltz, four other Bishops and our National A.C.W. Chaplain, Rev. Ella Frank. The reason why so many Bishops were in atten-dance is because the hosts for our conference were Sas-katoon and Qu’Appelle dioceses. A welcoming reception followed Eucharist.

On Friday, after morning worship, we started our meetings. The following items were discussed:

Marion Saunders has completed the National A.C.W. Poli-cies book. A prayer service has been prepared for funeral home ser-vices for deceased A.C.W. members. This pamphlet can be used if the family wishes it and the clergy agree to the service. Council of the North needs our continued support.

In May 2017 there will be an A.C.W. National gathering for all A.C.W. members who would like to attend. Marion Saunders has been checking on locations in Ontario. One of the sites proposed is the Ancaster Redeemer College outside Hamilton.

Regarding the Anglican Foundation, it was brought to our attention that they provide air travel through Hope Air to transport children to cities for medical attention. If any group is interested, the cost is $250 per flight.

Mother’s Union Rep. Margaret de Carvalho spoke about their newest project. They provide programs with trained facilitators to help “parents be parents”.

Our prayer partner is Central Newfoundland, and Saska-toon will pray for us. After this meeting, we held Ecclesias-tical meetings. The topic was where the A.C.W. will be in 5 – 10 years. We are hoping that with the help of younger

women and men in our parishes we will all still be viable.

On Friday night, our guest speakers were Sisters in Spirit. They shared their stories about missing and murdered indigenous women. After the discussion, we partook in a Smudging Ceremony, where evil spirits vanish and a per-son is protected.

On Saturday, our meetings resumed. Our Executive was presented – National President – Susan Kinney; National Vice President – Margaret Warwick; National Secretary – Janet Pike; National Treasurer – Joanna Muzyka and Past President – Terri Parrill.

After this meeting, we travelled to Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a Northern Plains Indian Cultural Centre. Here, some took part in Tepee raising and others took a guided walk where we saw where Buffalo Jumps were held. This is the site of an ongoing archeological dig. We then had a tradi-tional dance performed by a very talented person.

From here we travelled to Emmanuel Church for tea. We were given a very interesting talk about the history of the church.

That evening after dinner, we had a presentation by Bishop Michael Hawkins from the Council of the North. Eighty-five per cent of Anglican churches in Saskatoon and Qu’Appelle dioceses are in the Council of the North; they receive $2 million. To operate they need our help to provide clergy with books, bibles and necessary items. He suggested that we hold a Council of the North Sunday.

On Sunday, Eucharist was held in the Chapel at Queen’s House celebrated by our A.C.W. Chaplain Ella Frank. The 2015 National Conference will be held Oct. 1st – 4th at Lavrock Conference Centre, Newfoundland. We had a great time. I am so thankful to have attended this conference on your behalf. Thank you all for giving me the privilege.

A.C.W. Executive Annual MeetingMay 15, 2014

Christ Church Cataraqui, Kingston“Come and Journey with a Saviour”

Bishop Michael Oulton, assisted by The Rev. Blair Peever, led us in the Service of Holy Communion. A.C.W. members helping as readers were Brenda

Hobbs, Betty James and The Rev. Joyce Blackburn. Kathy Morgan led us in Prayers for the People. Helping at the Eucharist were Wendy Borland and Margie Mulvi-hill.

In the Bishop’s sermon, he spoke of mending fences – so we don’t lose our animals. He spoke of Jesus taking us to where there is no need for a fence as He is our security – keeping us safe. Our churches should be places of secu-rity – where we are nourished with His word. We then, are to carry His Word – His light – out into the world proclaiming the Good News to all.

Elizabeth Howard, A.C.W. President of Christ Church Cataraqui, welcomed those assembled to the Diocesan A.C.W. annual meeting. Maureen Sills, Diocesan A.C.W. President, also welcomed us to this meeting. She intro-duced our guests – Marion Saunders, Past President of the National A.C.W.; Ann Hopkins, who represented the Catholic Women League, Kingston Archdiocese; Nancy Sutherland. President of the United Church Women, Bay of Quinte Conference; and Norma Wrightly, Past Presi-dent of UCW, Bay of Quinte Conference.

Our guest speaker was Marian Saunders. She talked about dandelions – how pretty they are - how they never need pampering – they are everywhere – accessible to every-one – as was Jesus. Christians could be more like that! Showing our sunny faces everywhere – winning people by talking about the Word – like Zacchaeus, to come down from our tree and follow Him.

Following a delicious lunch and browsing the Church Book room display, we began the business meeting. Our Diocesan A.C.W. Chaplain, The Rev. Joyce Blackburn, opened the afternoon with Prayer, thanking God for His gifts which we share. Maureen Sills, Diocesan President, introduced members of the Diocesan Executive to the as-sembly. Maureen talked about the Diocesan annual retreat which is scheduled for Sept. 22nd and 23th. This year it

will be open to all A.C.W. members, not just Executive members.

A.C.W. Archives Convenor

My mandate as ACW archive representative is to urge ACW groups to send old min-ute books, scrapbooks, photographs and other memorabilia to the diocesan office

where trained archival staff will catalogue and store these items in the Diocese of Ontario Archives. The records will be in a safe, environmentally-controlled vault at the archives, which has been the central repository for historical records since 1886.

Please keep up the good work you are doing by sending items no longer in use to the archives for safe storage. These records are available to you if you want to do research in the future.

The archives are located at 90 Johnson St, Kingston, ON K7L 1X7, across Johnson Street from St George’s Cathedral and are open to the public Tuesday and Thursday afternoons

1 pm– 4:30 pm (4:15 pm during the summer).

Appointments can be made if these hours are not convenient by contacting Lisa Russell, Diocesan Archival Technician, at 613-544-4774, ext. 121, or [email protected]

Chaplain’s Report

How time flies! The Diocesan A.C.W. has shared 10 monthly meetings at Christ Church, Cataraqui centering on the theme “Come to the light of Christ”. Each month

we revise our prayer petitions focusing on the trouble spots of the world, the sick and bereaved. We praise our heavenly Father for His healing touch, love, compassion, and especially His light and warmth amongst the darkness.

Each of us have been seven weeks reflecting on Sister Joyce Rupp’s book, The Cup of our Life. This study commenced upon the completion of the fall retreat at Providence Spirituality Centre. We follow daily in our quiet time these four steps: Breath-prayer; Reflection; Scripture Study; Journaling and Prayer. We also had a rewarding craft session led by Joyce Eggleston: the making of beaded metal book marks.

I give thanks for the opportunity to attend three regional meetings. I am most proud of the contribution of time, talents and financial outreach each member contributes to charity. Your love is shown in concrete action.

All of us have vowed to continue our journey towards the Saviour.

Supply Cupboard ReportThis year has seen a

gradual winding down of the work of the Supply Cupboard.

Individual ACWs have been encouraged to establish a direct contact with the group or groups that they wish to help and many have done this with great success.

A heartfelt Thank You to all of you who have supported the work of the Supply Cupboard over the years. May the Lord bless you as you continue to work in His name.

Synod Council continued in 2014 to actively work on the business of the Diocese; finance, budget, parish concerns, and real-estate issues just to name a few.

In October the Diocese met at Synod and the time together was wonderful. Hopefully, you have reviewed the Bishop’s Charge and the highlights from the three days on the Diocesan website.

Moving forward from Synod the members of Synod Council changed, as serving terms ended for many of us. For our A.C.W., Brenda Hobbs from Bath, is our new representa-tive.

The new Synod Council will continue, with God’s help to focus on ensuring that our Dio-cese remains dedicated to the work of Christ.

May I take this opportunity to say to all of you, that it has been my privilege and my pleasure to serve you as a rep-resentative on Synod Council. I truly enjoyed my four years and never left a meeting that I did not feel inspired and I embraced the notion that we can do so much more if we work together as one body with Christ as our leader.

Margie Mulvihill

It has been another suc-cessful year for our ladies

of the Frontenac Region A.C.W.s. I am amazed at all the work that your groups do. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to each of you who helped in so many ways to contribute to our success.

During the year, our A.C.W.s participated in many events.

St. Mark’s A.C.W. held a Victorian tea to celebrate their 170th anniversary; Christ Church Cataraqui hosted the World Day of Prayer; Church of the Good Shepherd invited local A.C.W. ladies for a potluck with a speaker and St. Andrew’s celebrated their organist’s 65 years of playing for them. These are only a few of your many events. As well, you remembered your seniors, supported the prayer shawl ministry and made Comfort dolls. These events allowed us to contribute to our individual parishes and provide outreach to our community.

Our Frontenac Region annual meeting was held on Oct. 30th at St. Peter’s Collin’s Bay. It was a wonderful day of

fellowship. I would like to thank the A.C.W. at St. Peter’s for hosting our meeting. Marg Stewart from the Cana-dian Women for Women in Afghanistan spoke about her visit to Afghanistan. Her organization has helped to fund schools and libraries to help women in that country.

During the year, I was honoured to present 3 A.C.W. pins and certificates – Mildred Flindall and Marion Carleton from Christ Church Cataraqui; and Joyce Hill from St. Paul’s Sydenham.

Our next Frontenac Region annual meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29th at St. Andrew’s Sharbot Lake. More information will follow.

Leeds & Grenville Region Report 2014Another busy and suc-

cessful year has passed and we are truly amazed and uplifted as we look back and review all we have been able to accomplish together. God’s encouragement and guidance continues to keep us strong as we support our continued church needs as well as outreach in our com-munities and beyond.

On Thanksgiving Sunday, I joined the congregation of St. John the Baptist, Parish of Elizabethtown in Lyn, along with their President, Joan McFall Hudson, in presenting Judy Hodgkinson her ACW pin and certificate.

On the weekend of June 6th – 8th, St. Lawrence, Brock-ville celebrated the 200th anniversary of Anglican minis-try in Brockville. On Sunday, our preacher was the Most Rev. Fred Hiltz, Primate of Canada, who spoke about our newest Diocese, The Indigenous Spiritual Ministry of Mishamikoweesh. It was a wonderful day of celebration.

Our Regional meeting was held at St. Lawrence, Brock-ville on Oct. 9th with 94 members from 14 different churches. We were privileged to have Rev. Jeanie Oulton, chaplain at Joyceville Institution as our guest speaker, who spoke about prison ministry.

St. James Kemptville will host our 2015 regional meeting on Oct. 8th. I encourage you all to attend.

Thanks to all the ACW groups who have welcomed me as their representative, to my Vice President Wendy Borland for her support, and to Elaine Clifton, who has joined the Diocesan Executive as a member at large.

Congratulations to all the A.C.W.s within our

region for all the work they have done throughout the last year to support their parishes and the many organizations within their local communities and beyond.

In the fall, we met in Madoc at St. John the Baptist.

It was a day of reflection, fellowship and fun. Thank you so much to the A.C.W. of St. Johns for being wonderful hosts for the day. Dorothy Davies Flindall was our guest speaker and she inspired us all to reach out beyond our own comfortable world and look to the needs of others.

Also, this past fall I attended an A.C.W. Sunday service in Stirling, to present the parish with a Thank You on behalf

of the Diocese for their many many years of dedicated service. Their A.C.W. held its final meeting in June 2014.

As we move towards spring, many of you will be busy with your teas, luncheons and other fund raising events. Within our region, we have two parishes celebrating 150th anniversaries this year: Christ Church, Belleville and St. John the Baptist, Madoc. Our congratulations to you.

On October 27th we will come together at Christ Church, Belleville for our annual regional meeting and I will be sending you more information regarding that meeting.

Blessings to all of you.

Camp HyantoCamp Hyanto continues

to be an ever chang-ing and growing Ministry. We thank all of our many faithful supporters, es-pecially the ACWs, for assisting us with spreading the word about the camp and helping it to grow.

The new Board appointed by Synod Council has focused on four areas

throughout 2014.These are:

1. Fundraising: Working hard with ACW groups, Parishes and individuals to make the camp financially sustainable; and, beginning in 2015, inviting Anglicans across the Diocese to begin to make monthly pre-autho-rized donations.

2. Marketing: Focusing on how best to advertise the camp and where. The main goal here is to continue to increase attendance throughout the summer.

3. Programming: Assisting the Camp Manager to develop and implement new programs that will excite, attract and help to retain campers from season to season.

4. Maintenance: Developing a group of individu-als to work as a “Maintenance Team” at the camp. This group will focus on projects aimed at maintaining the

existing buildings and advising on any neces-sary new projects.

Highlights for 2014 include:

• Increased attendance for the second year;

• An older cabin refurbished (Yukon);

• A new fire circle built;

• A new garbage shed installed;

• The nature study program re-introduced to camp-ers;

• Further development of our weekly Biblical themes for both campers and staff to benefit their faith de-velopment.

Still much work needs to occur. Many people recognize that it takes a village to raise a child. By continuing to work together and having as many people as possible invest in the camp, this Ministry can become a financially independent entity and a legacy we can be proud to leave for future generations.
