From Revd Sophie

I’ve learned a few things this week. The happiest discovery was that the insertion of a folded tissue into one’s mask totally stops the fogging up of one’s glasses. How neat is that?!! I found myself putting it to the test and breathing out really deeply and it still held up!

The second, less happy thing I’ve discovered is that Lycra is a slippery beast to sew with!! The number of masks I’ve made this week that have ended up in the un-picking basket doesn’t bear thinking about. I should also note that I’ve discovered how impossibly difficult it is to unpick Lycra!! I regret having learned that Lycra was a particularly effective exterior layer for a mask.

I’ve also learned that elastic is the new toilet paper! There was none left in Spotlight on two visits I made and then I happily remembered “Darn cheap fabrics” in Port Melbourne. After queuing up outside for a decent length of time and then once inside, double that to pay for my desired fabric and elastic, I zipped home to get to work. I am glad for this business that suddenly everyone wants to get inside their doors. I found some really fun fabrics and so the masks I am making have extended beyond the plain black or Sesame Street patterns! I’ve moved on to a range of animal prints, pineapples with sunglasses, polka dots and other fun bright patterns. I like the idea of wearing a mask that makes people smile-though now that we’re all wearing masks, no one will know if we achieve the goal!

This does change our encounters with one another. I’ve noticed it as I walk past people on the street-eye contact sometimes is enough but other times it needs a verbal acknowledgement to connect. It makes me realise how much we rely on facial expressions in day to day encounters.

Something else I’ve learned: we need an advertising campaign to teach people how to wear masks and why they need to not touch them once they’re on! The number of times I’ve seen people pull a mask off to talk/drink/eat in public or to readjust it without sanitizing their hands-any virus particles that the mask had collected thereby transferred to the user’s hands and then onto everything else they touch!

Perhaps it might help folk if they think of the mask as they do their underwear-we tend not to touch or readjust or even take off our underwear in public. We also tend not to re-wear dirty underwear. So too with masks!

On that tasteful note, love and blessings, Sophie

Gathering in God’s name

Music before the service Traditional Irish melody Slane arr. by Andrew Fletcher

A bell is rung as a signal for all to stand

Hymn TIS 560

1. All my hope on God is founded; all my trust he will renew, through all change and chance he guides me, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own.

3. God’s great goodness lasts for ever, deep his wisdom, passing thought; splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore.

4. Daily the almighty giver will his bounteous gifts bestow; in his will our souls find pleasure, leading us where’er we go. Love will stand at his hand, joy shall wait for his command.

The Prayer of the Day

Presider O God, the fount of wisdom, you have revealed to us in Christ the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price:

All grant us your Spirit’s gift of discernment, that, in the midst of the things of this world, we may learn to value the priceless worth of your kingdom, and be ready to renounce all else for the sake of the precious gift you offer. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Sacred Story

The First Reading: Genesis 29.15-28

15 Then Laban said to Jacob, ‘Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?’ 16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were lovely, and Rachel was graceful and beautiful. 18 Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, ‘I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.’ 19 Laban said, ‘It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.’ 20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her. 21 Then Jacob said to Laban, ‘Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.’ 22 So Laban gathered together all the people of the place, and made a feast. 23 But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 (Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.) 25 When morning came, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?’ 26 Laban said, ‘This is not done in our country—giving the younger before the firstborn. 27 Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me for another seven years.’ 28 Jacob did so, and completed her week; then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 2. Teach us, Lord, full obedience, holy reverence, true humility. Test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of your purity. Cause our faith to rise, cause our eyes to see your majestic love and authority. Words of power that can never fail; let their truth prevail over unbelief.

3. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of your plans for us. Truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on your promises, and by faith we’ll walk as you walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till your Church is built and the earth is filled with your glory.

Presider The Gospel of our Lord, according to Matthew (Matthew 13: 1-3a, 44-46, 51-58).

All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3And he told them many things in parables, saying:

44“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

51“Have you understood all this?” They answered, “Yes.” 52And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

53When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place. 54He came to his hometown and began to teach the people in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? 55Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?” 57And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honour except in their own country and in their own house.” 58And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief. Presider Let us affirm as ours the faith of the Church. (from APBA p.37)

All We believe in one God, who made and loves all that is.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was born, lived, died and rose again, and is coming to call all to account.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who calls, equips and sends out God’s people, and brings all things to their true end.

Presider This is our faith, the faith of the Church:

All We believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Please sit or kneel

All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Presider Almighty God,

who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Greeting of Peace

All stand for the Greeting of Peace.

Presider We are the body of Christ.

Music during Communion Hymn improvisation on Dominus Regit Me by June Nixon The Presider leads the post Communion prayer, concluding with Presider Most loving God,

All you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit.

The Notices Hymn TIS 531

1. Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing, the people of God from his table take leave. The supper is ended: may now be extended the fruits of his service in all who believe. The seed of his teaching, our hungry souls reaching, shall blossom in action for all humankind. His grace shall incite us, his love shall unite us to work for his kingdom, his purpose to find.

2. With praise and thanksgiving to God ever-living the tasks of our everyday life we will face, our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring, embracing as neighbours all those of each race. One feast that has fed us, one light that has led us, unite us as one in his life that we share. Then may all the living, with praise and thanksgiving, give honour to Christ and his name that we bear.

Our ministry is OPEN whilst our doors are closed. Please help!

Whilst the physical church doors are closed, our ministry continues, as do our financial commitments.

We have already lost rental income and our parishioner giving has also dropped.

Parish Council have done some financial modelling for how we might navigate a prolonged period of closure. We have a financial plan for the first of three stages, which includes maintaining current staffing but significantly reducing other costs.

We understand that everyone is impacted by this pandemic and that extends to our financial lives.

We no longer have a physical offertory plate and so the only method of giving is either by direct debit or online.

We really need your support to maintain the ministry of our parish. Please contact us if you would like help to set up a direct debit or you can make your offertory via our website, here:

If you prefer to work with paper and a pen, please contact the parish office and we can post you a form.
