This familiarises students with the International Phonetic Alphabet and enables them to accurately transcribe between IPA and orthographic English. Students will learn how to describe sounds and how they are produced. This will be used to raise awareness of pronunciation errors caused by German interference. The course will also familiarise students with native-speaker “fast speech” of different American accents. The analysis of various pronunciation features will enable students to recognise accents according to regional heritage. This work also aims to improve the accuracy and fluency of students’ spoken English, and awareness and understanding of varieties of English and culture of the USA.
