    ANGLO-SAXON

    ACQUISITIONS

    OF

    THE

    BRITISH MUSEUM.

    Thrymsa and Sceatta Series

    ;

    Mercia.

    [See

    Plate

    X.]

    The

    first

    olume

    of

    the

    Catalogue

    of

    English

    Coins

    in the

    British

    Museum

    (Anglo-Saxon

    Series)

    was

    pub-

    lished

    in

    1887,

    and

    was followed

    by

    a

    second

    volume

    in 1893. Since

    the

    publication

    of

    these two volumes

    the collection

    has

    been

    increased

    by

    a

    very

    large

    number

    of

    coins,

    many

    of

    which,

    notably

    the find

    presented

    by

    Sir A. W. Franks

    (Num.

    Chron

    ,

    1894,

    p.

    29),

    have

    materially

    ncreased

    our

    knowledge

    of

    the

    coinages

    of

    the

    Anglo-Saxon

    period.

    It

    has been

    suggested

    that

    a

    notice

    in the

    Chronicle of coins

    acquired

    by

    the British

    Museum

    since

    the

    publication

    of the

    Catalogue

    would

    be of

    service

    to

    members,

    nd

    I

    therefore

    propose

    to

    publish

    them

    with

    a.

    brief

    description,

    nd

    with

    any

    reference hat

    will

    suffice o

identify them, and to indicate their position in

    relation

    to

    the

    catalogued

    coins.

    The

    type

    is

    presumably

    taken

    from a Roman
