Education Week 2019 at Mano: ‘Celebrating Careers’

This is certainly a big week at Mano. We had a memorable

launch at Assembly on Monday, the highlight being the 3 parent

‘volunteers’ who talked to our students about their jobs, their

journeys to get there and how past experiences at school had

helped them to be successful. Opportunities for our students to

think about their futures have been created by staff, knowing

that we all grow up too fast! Breakfast this morning promised to

be a special event, with Vicki our Canteen Manageress doing a

truly fabulous job feeding approximately 350! The outfits that

students wore today displayed such a diverse variety of jobs

and careers – I think some extra help from parents was most

evident and most appreciated. Tomorrow we look forward to

hosting grandparents in our Prep community – stories about

how school was for them back in their days will be shared and

morning tea enjoyed just prior to morning recess time.

Federal Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall

With some awesome help from parents, a final profit of

$2,059.64 was achieved.

The cake stall contributions were amazing – thank you! Early

morning helpers ensured things were ready to match the 8am

Polling Booth opening in the Multi. Helpers throughout the day

kept sausages and eggs & bacon rolls ready to serve to hungry

voters. And a big sincere thank you to those parents who

helped to pack up at 3pm.

The breakdown of the takings on the day was: BBQ –

$1,804.05. Chocolate Drive – $46.00. Cake Stall – $742.00.

Costs have been deducted from these to show the overall result

We would like to thank the following businesses for their

generous donations: Bread Brothers Baking Company,

Brumby’s Bakery, Coles - Geelong West, Dan Murphys -

Geelong West, Nardi Produce, Steggles and Woolworths -

Pakington Strand.

I would also like to confirm the final profit from our recent

Mother’s Day Stall was $530.10.

Student Attitudes to School Surveying Coming Up

Over the coming week we will be inviting students in Grades 4,

5 and 6 to participate in an online survey, created by the

Department of Education and Training (DET).

Students will be asked to indicate their level of agreement with a

range of statements, embracing their learning, their peers, their

teachers and the school as a whole.

The responses are collated by DET and we expect this to be

shared back with the school early Term 3. From this we can

acknowledge the positives and also action some improvement

strategies to address those areas requiring attention. Survey

data is interesting to analyse as we can track how did the Grade

6s of this year feel 12 months ago as Grade 5s, how do we

compare to others schools and how did boys respond compare

to girls for example. Survey data will be shared in Term 3 when

it becomes available via future newsletters. ‘Similar’ surveys will

be completed by staff and also by a sample selected group of

parents, later in the school year.

Midyear Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews

Some advanced notice of these –

Reports will be issued on FRIDAY 21ST JUNE.

Parent Teacher Interviews will be on WEDNESDAY 26TH JUNE,

12pm – 7pm (this is a Pupil Free Day). Parents are invited to

book a ten minute Parent Teacher Interview with their child’s

teacher and/or specialist teachers

Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews will open on Compass

on Monday 27th May, 4:30pm and close on Friday 21st June,

4pm.

School Council Parent Member Vacancy

We presently have a parent member vacancy on School

Council. This is due to the resignation of a parent member. The

term of office would be until March 2020. The next scheduled

School Council meeting is Monday 17th June at 7:30pm in the

Staffroom. School Council meets twice per term (so 8 meetings

for the calendar year).

For more information please feel free to contact myself via the

Office and we would be happy to allow a potential parent to

come along to the June meeting and ascertain if they wished to

make a longer commitment, after attending this meeting.

Model Gratitude

Instead of asking your children questions such as, “How was

school?” and, “What did you do today?” teach them to reframe

their day.

The following is a ‘game’ which could be played over dinner.

Everyone must answer three questions:

What did someone do today to make you happy?

What did you do to make someone else happy?

What have you learned today?

I really like this simple exercise for how it helps us all find the

positive in every day. It teaches gratitude, nurtures optimism,

and recognises kindness. It doesn’t matter what may have

happened at work or school, or how stressed any of us may

have felt when we sat down at the table; the whole mood seems

to lift once you’ve played this game. You can learn things about

your kids that they’d probably never have thought to tell you

otherwise. Try it. It might just become the highlight of your day!

CompassPay & Qkr!

From the 20th May 2019 we have replaced payments for camps, excursions and activities previously paid through Qkr! with Com-pass Pay, to simplify our payment and permission system for events.

Qkr! will now only be used for Essential Student Learning Items, Building Fund Donations and some fundraising events.

The Compass Pay procedures will not only ensure all events can run smoothly, safely and effectively, it will also have the following benefits for both parents and teachers:

No more lost or misplaced notes/permission slips

More efficient communication for parents regarding events

A quick and easy way for parents to consent and pay for an event at anytime from anywhere. Compass Pay is a secure payment portal and will not store any payment information you enter.

When there is an excursion, what will happen? The excursion permission note will be sent home. You will also receive an email with details of the upcoming excursion or “event” if your email address is up-to-date in Compass. You will then have to log into Compass to complete payment and consent. (You do not have to update your details – this information is already within the system.) When you have consented and paid via Compass the permission note does not have to be sent back to school. What type of card can I use? Credit or Debit Mastercard or Visa cards can be used in CompassPay. Will you receive confirmation of payment? YES. You must have a valid registered email address in Compass and you will receive an email confirmation that your payment was processed. What if I can’t remember a transaction that appears on my statement? Transactions will appear on your statement as ‘COMPASSPAY.COM’. If you are unsure what a payment is for:

Log in to Compass and go to the My Payments tab (under Tools menu); OR Go to www.compasspay.com and enter the basic details of the transaction/credit card.

Please contact Jessie or Jacquie at the Office if you have any further questions about CompassPay.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parents are invited to book a ten minute Parent Teacher Interview with their child’s teacher and/or specialist teachers on Wednesday 26th June between 12pm-7pm. This day will be a Pupil Free Day.

Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews will open on Monday 27th May, 4:30pm and close on Friday 21st June, 4pm.

Bookings are unable to be made after Friday 21st June, 4pm. This will ensure teachers have sufficient time to prepare for your child’s interview.

This year all bookings will be made online using our Compass Portal. Compass can be accessed at https://manifold-vic.compass.education or by using the Compass iOS or Android apps. Once you have logged into Compass under ‘My News’, you will see a notification for Parent Teacher Conference with a prompt to ‘Click here for Booking’. Follow the prompts to either ‘Start Booking’ or follow the instructions in ‘Show How to Book’.

Please note Parent Teacher Interviews will only be scheduled on an alternate day or time in exceptional circumstances.

If you require any assistance with booking a Parent Teacher Interview on Compass or would like to make a booking with a specialist teacher please contact Jacquie or Jessie in the Office.
