Lung cancer can be described as a disease that consists of uncontrolled growth of cells in tissues of the lung. While the normal lung tissue cells reproduce and form healthy lung tissue, these abnormal cells reproduce rapidly and do not grow into normal lung tissue.

The lumps of cancer cells also known as tumors develop and disturb the proper functioning of the lungs. Major symptoms associated with this disease include shortness of breath, coughing (including coughing up blood), and weight loss. Lung cancer is mainly caused due to carcinogens which are present in tobacco smoke, ionizing radiation, and viral infection.

Lung cancers are classified as per the histological which has some important implications for clinically managing and diagnosing the disease. Majority of lung cancers are carcinomas and arise from epithelial cells.

The two most common histological types of lung carcinoma, characterized by the size and appearance of the malignant cells include non-small-cell and small-cell lung carcinoma. The non-small cell lung cancer is the most prevalent form and accounts for about 75-80 percent of lung cancers. It can be further classified into Epidermoid carcinoma, Adenocarcinoma, Bronchioalveolar carcinoma and Large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma.

Small cell lung cancer on the other hand accounts for 20 percent of all lung cancers. In order to improve the chances of survival, it is highly important to detect the disease early. Various tests used to diagnose lung cancer include physical examination, chest examination, chest X-ray, CT scan, PET scan, MRI, Sputum cytology, Bronchoscopy, Biopsy and more.
