1.1 background of the study

We have been informed throughout the internet, newspapers and even maybe from around our neighborhood about the cruelty or abuse towards animals. Many people know that animal abuse is something cruel and immoral.

But, do they know that a person who abuse an animal can be sued and punish under the Animal Act 1953? The issues arises explores the awareness of people towards the existence of Animal Act 1953.

1.2 problem statementAnimal abuse is getting worse nowadays due to human hands and conduct. Cats, dogs and other animals is the

victim from human cruelty. They have to bear the consequences made by this people. Animals also have the

right to live in this world without being afraid or abuse. Animal abuse cases are reported almost every day and it

shocked all people around world especially to animal lovers.

Many jurisdictions around the world have enacted statutes which forbid cruelty to some animals but these vary by

country and in some cases by the use or practice. Animal Act 1953 is our authority in order to uphold the justice

towards this weakens creatures.

This statute is the only way to ensure protection for animals. By investigating the views of students and

lecturers in UniSZA about Animal Law 1953, we will come out with our research regarding the level of awareness of

this statute in UniSZA so that we can know about their concerned towards animal abuse.

2.1 introduction

The main purpose of this research is to investigate the level of awareness among UniSZA students and lecturers about Animal Act 1953.

Other than that is to increase the awareness of animal rights among 30 student of Faculty of Law and International Relations and Animal Science and also three lecturers was chosen as respondents.

The data for the research were collected through questionnaires and interviews.

2.2 respondent of the study

For the questionnaire, there are 25 respondents of Animal Science course from first year undergraduates and 5

respondents of Bachelor in Law student from first year to fourth year.

The respondents consist of 27 female and 5 male in the age between 18 to 45 years old.

There are also 3 another lecturers who are being interviewed. This lecturers are from the Faculty of Law and Relations.

2.3 research instrument

Quantitative

A set of questionnaire containing 15 questions. This questionnaire

consist of 10 close–ended questions(yes/no) and also 5open

–ended questions.

The questionnaire also contain the demographic information of

respondent.

The questionnaire was piloted to a group of 10 student to assess it

validity before is was distributed.

Qualitative

A set of interview question which consist of 5 question of open ended and the interview

was conducted on three lecturers.

The recording of interview session was record.

The interview was utilized to confirm the findings from the

questionnaire.

2.4 research procedure1st

• A pilot study was conducted to assess the validity of the research instrument.

2nd

• The pilot study was conducted on 10 student of Bachelor of Law. All The 10 students completed and returned the questionnaire, and several error had been detected and the problem was settled.

3rd

• The questionnaire was distributed to students of Bachelor in Animal Science and also to Bachelor of Law.

4th

• While for questionnaire, 3 lecturer’s were chosen to be interviewed.

5th

• Appointments were made and those lecturers was agreed to be interviewed and try to give best respond to question that will be ask. The interview session was record on consent of the lecturers.

2.5 data analysisThe questionnaires of this research consists of open-ended questions and close ended questions. For the close-ended question, the data was analyze by using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Then, the result were presented trough frequency count and tabulated in tables. Then the chart, graph and pie charts was form.

For the open-ended questions in the questionnaire, the responses and descriptions were listed and presented in the table.

Furthermore, the interview data were also analyzed by identifying the categories of the data. The data of the two respondent were tabulate and differentiate in the form of the table. The interview respond was quoted and was analyze.
