Adaptations
• An adaptation is a trait to help living things survive in its environment.
• Adaptations are inherited or passed on from their parents to their young.

Adaptations for Getting Food• Some animals, such as the hawk, have
feet that can hold tightly onto their food that they catch.
• Some animals have teeth to eat their food.
• Many kind birds have bills that help them catch and eat their favorite food.
• Some animals have special feet that are good for digging.

Adaptations for Protection
• Some animals can camouflage or blend in with their environment.
• Some animals have armor to protect them.
• Some animals can mimic or look like other animals to protect themselves.
• Some animals release poison to protect themselves.

Camouflage
Some animals are able to blend in with their environment such as the walking stick.

Armor
Some animals have armor. For example, spikes and horns protect this horned lizard.

Mimicry
Some animals look like other animals as protection. For example, the viceroy looks like a bad-tasting monarch butterfly.

Poison
Some animals are poisonous. Coral snakes are poisonous. They bite with their poisonous fangs.
