USING PICTURE CARDS & LETTERS TO REINFORCE CONSONANTS & PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS

Animated-Literacy™ helps students develop phonological awareness by rewriting and substituting sounds in key words in songs such as "Are You Sleeping." In this song, students replace the "d" in "ding, dong, ding" with selected consonant sounds. (e.g. Are you tickling, Timmy Tiger? Timmy's bells are saying, "Ting, tong, ting.") When singing the song, teachers or students can hold up an alphabet character's picture card or letter(s) to identify the character, sound, and gesture that will be used in each new verse. As the students sing, they should perform the gesture that accompanies each character's sound to activate their muscle memories. Once the students become successful at blending a variety of consonant sounds with "ing" and "ong," they can replace "ing" and "ong" with the rime that comes at the end of various animal and environmental sounds. (e.g. Are you juggling, Jenny Jaguar? Jenny's bees are saying, "Juzz, juzz, juzz.")

The teacher places a toy bee next to Jenny Jaguar's picture card. The students delete the "b" sound from "buzz" and replace it with Jenny's sound to sing, "Juzz, juzz, juzz." As they sing, they gesture juggling by moving their hands up and down.

When first participating in the sound substitution activities, students sing the sounds in the context of a complete verse to the song. As their abilities develop, teachers can speed up the process and increase fluency by taking the activity out of the context of the song and rotating the sounds at increasingly rapid rates. Teachers can prepare for this activity by collecting a variety of toy animals and objects that make sounds that can be used in the lesson. At first, teachers should use either the full size or half size picture cards in this activity. As the lessons progress, letters and letter patterns can replace the picture cards so that students learn to associate sounds with letter symbols.

EXAMPLE 1

The teacher places a toy horn next to Farley Fox's picture card. The students delete the first "t" sound from "toot" and replace it with Farley's sound to sing, "Foot, foot, foot." As they sing, they gesture fishing by pretending to reel in a large fish.

EXAMPLE 2

Polly Panda

Pp The teacher places a toy dog next to Polly Panda's picture card. The students delete the "b" sound from "bark" and replace it with Polly's sound to sing, "Park, park, park." As they sing, they gesture painting by pretending to move a paint brush up and down.

EXAMPLE 3

Chauncy Chipmunk

ch The teacher places a toy boot next to Chauncy Chipmunk's picture card. The students delete the "s" and "t" sounds from "stomp" and replace them with Chauncy's sound to sing, "Chomp, chomp, chomp." As they sing, they gesture chopping with an ax.

EXAMPLE 4

*NOTE: When the toy's sound begins with a consonant blend (st), all of the consonants that come before the first vowel are removed before substituting the alphabet character's sound.

The teacher places Sadie Seal and Timmy Tiger's picture cards next to a toy pup. The students delete the "b" sound from "bark" and replace it with the sounds of "s" and "t" to sing, "Stark, stark, stark." As they sing, they gesture surfing and tickling.

MOVING FROM SINGLE CONSONANTS TO CONSONANT BLENDS

As students begin to demonstrate success with single consonant sounds, teachers can extend the activity by combining selected consonants to form consonant blends.

Rosie Raccoon

CONSONANT BLEND EXAMPLE 1

The teacher places Sadie Seal, Timmy Tiger, and Rosie Raccoon's picture cards next to a toy cat. The students delete the "m" sound from "meow" and replace it with the sounds of "s, t" and "r" to sing, "Stre-ow, stre-ow, stre-ow." As they sing, they gesture surfing, tickling and riding.

MOVING FROM THE USE OF PICTURE CARDS TOLETTER SYMBOLS AND PATTERNS

In the early stages of Animated-Literacy™ instruction, students learn to associate sounds with alphabet characters and their stories, songs, and gestures. As instruction advances, students must learn to associate sounds with letter symbols and letter patterns. Teachers can reinforce this process by replacing the alphabet character picture cards with letters and letter patterns and continuing the previous activities.

USING LETTER SYMBOLS EXAMPLE 1

w The teacher places a toy pig next to the letter "w." The students add Winkie Walrus's sound to "oink" to form "woink" and sing, "Woink, woink, woink." As they sing, they pretend to wash their faces with both hands.

*NOTE: Because "oink" begins with a vowel rather than a consonant sound, students do not need to remove any sounds before adding the character's sound.

sUSING LETTER SYMBOLS EXAMPLE 2

p The teacher places a toy mouse next to the letters "s" and "p." The students delete the sounds of "s" and "qu" from "squeak" and add the sounds of Sadie Seal and Polly Panda to "eak" to form "speak." As they sing "Speak, speak, speak," they gesture "surfing" and "painting."
