Dear Devotees,

Wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! The year 2013 was a very busy, exciting, happening and fruitful year and we promise that 2014 will be no less. While we continued our much appreciated religious and social programs in 2013, we introduced some new ones like the week-long Garba nights during Navaratri and the monthly recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama. We improved our existing programs based on your feedback and added some new thoughtful twists to Ganesh Chaturthi, Jagannath Yatra, Yagna, Dashera, etc.

Our attempt has always been to make every occasion as involving and festive as possible so you can connect spiri-tually (and socially). While our cultural events Diwali Dhamaka, Holi Milan and Volunteer Appreciation Day were very well received by families, our Gurukul resident camp was a big hit among the campers, who greatly missed the Temple after going home. By having different programs at the Temple, we all can pray, learn, celebrate, and enjoy together as a community, living our heritage and strengthening our common bond and solidarity.

In 2014, we will continue our effort to make every program a powerfully positive and engaging experience. We will keep adding, improving, and varying our programs so that every emotion you take home with you is a keep-sake. From enhanced curb appeal to greener landscape, from expanding infrastructure to new priests- you will notice the transformation brought about by our ongoing planning and execution. This year the Yagnashala will be the venue for the Shri Ganapati and Kartikeya Maha Yagna, one of our biggest events of the year. The new house purchased by the Temple on Steitz Road will be utilized for our Gurukul campers and counselors. Temple has also added a new parking lot to accommodate more devotees. We will keep you appraised on the latest de-velopments through Anjali’s “Temple News” column.

In this issue of Anjali, along with the usual presentation of the program dates and timings, we introduce the recita-tion of Shri Vishnu Sahasranama as a new monthly program to be held on Saturdays. We have a supporting article related to this exalting the merits of “Naam Sankeertan.” We also proudly introduce our new column “In the Spot-light” which will showcase the achievements of our volunteers, Gurukul students and teachers, and other commu-nity leaders. We also have a visual feast for you through our picture collage that presents the “Highlights of 2013.”

We continue our columns “Great Minds, Greater Legacy” where we meet the legendary human computer, Shakuntala Devi and “Festival Fun Facts!” where we learn about Makar Sankranti. In our learning tool designed for children (and child-like adults!), this time we challenge them with a Word Search on Mahashivaratri. We also have an article on the “Importance of Annadaan” and a follow-up from Volunteer Appreciation Day which conveys how much we value you and your suggestions.

Thank you for reading Anjali and boosting our morale through your positive feedback. Please contribute through your articles, suggestions, pictures and achievements. We eagerly await them. Stay connected and may the bless-ings of Lord Ganesha always be with us.

Respectfully,Communications Committee

“Dhyayan Krithe Yagnaihi Therthayaam Dwapare Archayan.. Yathapnothi Thatapnothi Kalov Sangeerthya Kesavam”

This verse from the Bhagvad Gita states that to attain punya and reach God we should follow the path of Bhakti and Yagna in the Krita/Satya yuga, Dhyana and Gyan in the Treta yuga, Karma and Archana in the Dwapara yuga and Nama Sankeertan in the Kali yuga.

It is a fact that of all the yugas, evil reigns supreme in the Kali yuga. So even a small good deed in the Kali Yuga gives a lot of punya (merit). Puranas proclaim that the punya that takes ten years to be acquired in Satya Yuga can be acquired in one year in Treta Yuga, one month in Dwapara Yuga and one day in Kali Yuga. In the Kali yuga, Nama Sankeertan or chanting the name of God is enough to attain Moksha or salvation.

While unfortunate that we are born in Kali Yuga when Dharma is least thought about, we are very fortunate that the path to salvation is as simple as taking the Lord’s name. The Lord’s name can be chanted anytime, anywhere, but chanting it at Holy places and Temples increases its effects manifold.

In recent years the Temple has added Hanuman Chalisa, Divya Prabandham and Veda rectitation programs to lead the devotees on this path. In November 2013, the Temple added monthly recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama on a Saturday. Vishnu Sahasranama is thousand names of Lord Vishnu. It was recited by Bhishma Pitamaha on his deathbed when Yudhisthira asked Bhishma to tell him how one can free their bonds from Samsara or attain salvation.

The Temple invites devotees to participate in this Nama Sankeertan and enrich yourselves in your journey towards the Lord. Please do check the Temple Calendar/Anjali/Website for scheduled dates.

NOTE: At the Temple, Vishnu Sahasranama is also recited during Shri Venkateswara Abhishekam every month and daily in Dhanurmas (Dec-Jan).

Whatever beings exist on earth, they are all born

out of food. By food alone they remain alive and to that they return to in the end. Food is

called ‹annam’ because the created beings both consume it, andtheyareconsumedinittoo.Itisthefirstamongallthemedicaments in life. While many criticize feeding the guests as the prime agenda of a social or religious gathering, in the Manu Smriti, it is stated that it is the duty of a Gruhastha to offer food to his guests.

Parentsaresatisfiedbythesevaorserviceoftheirsonsanddaughters, Acharya by the sushrusha of his disciple and atithi by the food served by the gruhastha. By satisfying the atithi, gruhastha is blessed with Saaswatha Brahmalokam. By offer-

Importance of Annadaaning Pancha Bhakshya, the grushastha provides utmost satisfaction to the guest. The Pancha Bhakshyas are i) Bhakshya: sweets like laddoo, boli, etc. ii) Bhojya: rice, sambar, etc. iii) Lehyam: pachadi, kojju, etc iv) Chohyam: side items like Chitrannam, fruit salad, etc. v) Paneeyam: rasam, paayasam, etc.

“Annadaanam Param Daanam” –there is no greater daan than an-nadaan because of the contentment of the gruhastha in serving the food and the atithi in consuming what has been served. In all other types of material daans such complete contentment is not there. While the duty of the Gruhastha is to satisfy the atithi, the atithi also has the duty of blessing the gruhastha- “Annadaata Sukhi Bhava”. Even if this is not said by the atithi in words, it is implied. The sukham prayed for is not the loukeeka sukham but paramaarthika sukham- - eternal bliss.

Follow-up from Volunteer Appreciation Day

Importance of AnnadaanWe have been advised by our ancestors that whenever we donate, we should donate to the deserving. In olden times, people had enough subhiksha. Those who weren’t so prosperous were well looked after by the King. Brahmins were living and praying for the kshema or welfare of the society. And serving them with food was the duty of the gruhastha. At a later stage, the gruhasthas realized that some of the people they are serving food to were swaarthi, selfishpeopleandsotheyswitchedovertofeedingthepoor. After this, feeding the poor became predominant. Being blessed for feeding the poor by those being fed is a prayer for the eternal bliss of the gruhastha. This is aptly termed as “Narayana Seva”. If a person cannot undertake the task individually, he can join a group where such activity is conducted.

Before eating food one should pray to God “Namaste Annam As-makam Nityam Asthu ethath” thanking him for the food he pro-

vided before us. Parishechana mantras ordained for us is for this purpose. Similarly after eating food but before getting up we should do Uttara- Aposanam. In that we have to leave half ofthewatertakeninthehandforthebenefitofthedeservingjeevas in other worlds who are earnestly awaiting water from this world. “Rourave Apunya Nilaye Padmarbudha Nivasin-aam / Arthinaam Udakam Dattam Akshyyam Upathishtatu”

ESSAY CONTEST: DIWALI-THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS!First Prize (Age 5-10): Manushree Kulkarni

In India many festivals are celebrated. The festival of lights called “Deepavali” is one among them. “Deepa” means light and “Vali means line or row, so Deepavali means rows of lights. Deepavali is celebrated in Aashwina masa (month) from the thirteenth day of Krishna paksha to the third day of Shukla paksha in Kartik masa. When Lord Rama came back from vanvas, people decorated houses, wore new clothes and lit diyas to welcome Lord Rama, Devi Sita and Lakshman. By doing this they showed their love and how happy they were to see Rama back in Ayodhya. These festivals are celebrated because good won over bad.

This year I along with my family celebrated Deepavali by worshipping Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Krishna. I got to wear new dresses, eat my favorite sweetsBalushahandKajuBarfiandlitdiyaseverywhere. We also made an Aakash Kandil (lantern) at home. My favorite part was to put mehndi on my hands and go to my friend’s house for Deepavali get-together. The one thing which I learnt from my parents is that the way a diya pushes away the darkness, in the same way, we should do good things and push all the bad things away from our mind and glow like the diya.

First Prize (Age 11 & up): Saisparsh Kustagishettar

India is a land of festivals and traditions. We celebrate many festivals and traditions. But there is one very impor-tant festival, Diwali. Diwali or Deepavali is the festival oflights.ItsignifiestheimportanceofLordRamareturn-ing to his kingdom of Ayodhya after his 14 years in exile and vanquishing the demon, Ravana for kidnapping Sita. DiwalialsosignifiesthevictoryofLordKrishnaoverthedemon, Narakasura.

OnDiwali, allofuscelebratebylightingfirecrackers, diyas or deepas and rejoicing. We also go to the Temple and celebrate there. There are many different types of fireworkslitonDiwaliliketherocket, chakra, fountainand the sparklers. We also do many pujas. The main puja we perform is the Laxmi puja. We also pray to God Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi on Diwali. We eat many different types of food on Diwali.

This festival’s name comes from “deepa” which means light and “awali” which means row. So the full word means row of lights.

HistoryMakar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious days for Hindus and is celebrated in different cultural forms with great devotion & gaiety. Transition of Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere is known as “Makar Sankranti”. Makar means Capricorn and Sankranti is transition. There is a sankranti every month when the sun passes from one sign of the zo-diac to the next. There are twelve signs of the zodiac, and thus there are twelve sankrantis. Each of these sankrantis have their own relative importance but two of these are most important - the Mesh (Aries) Sankranti and the Ma-kar (Capricorn) Sankranti. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Magha. After this day the days start becoming longer & warmer.

Religious Significance

According to the Puranas, Sun God visits his son Shani, Swami of Makar Rashi and this day symbolizes the im-portance of a special relationship between father & son. It is the son who has the responsibility to carry forward his father’s dream and the continuity of the family. It was also on this day when Lord Vishnu ended the increasing terror-ism by the Asuras and this occasion represents the end of negativities and beginning of an era of righteous living.

Culture and FestivitiesThis festival is celebrated all over India with some region-al variations. In Uttar Pradesh, Sankrant is called “Khi-

chiri”. Taking a dip in the holy rivers is regarded as most auspicious. In Bengal, large number of pilgrims attend Ganga Sagar Mela on the banks of river Ganga. In Tamil Nadu it is called “Pongal”, and takes its name from the surging of rice boiled in a pot of milk especially amongst the farmers. Rice and pulses are cooked together in ghee and milk and offered to the family deity after a ritual wor-ship. In Andhra Pradesh, it is celebrated as a three-day harvest festival “Pedda Panduga” meaning big festival. In Maharashtra people exchange “tilgul” made from til (sesame seeds) and sugar and til-laddus made from til and jaggery. The under-lying thought in the exchange of tilguls is to forget past ill-feelings. In Gujarat elders in the family give gifts and help maintain social relationships withinthefamily.Kiteflyinghasbeenassociatedwiththisfestivalinabigway.InPunjabhugebonfiresarelitontheeve of Sankrant and is celebrated as “Lohari”. Friends and family get together and celebrate by dancing and throw-ingsweets,sugarcaneandriceinthebonfireInKerala,40days of Anushthana by the devotees of Ayyappa ends on this day in Sabarimala and is celebrated in a big way. In Bundelkhand and Madhya Pradesh this festival is called ‘Sakarat’ and is celebrated with special zeal and fervor. Tribals in Orissa celebrate their New Year with family and friendsbylightingbonfiresanddancing.InAssam, thisfestival is celebrated as “Bhogali Bihu” and in the coastal regions this is a harvest festival dedicated to Lord Indra.

Very few people around the world achieved what this wonder-woman did. A mathematical prodigy, also known as the ‘human computer’, Shakuntala Devi was known for her complex problem-solving skills without the aid of any mechanical device. Her talents earned her a place in

the 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records

Shakuntala Devi was born on November 4, 1929 in Banga-lore to an orthodox, Brahmin Kannadiga family. Her father refused to become a priest and instead joined a circus where he worked as a trapeze artist, lion tamer, tightrope walker and magician. It is said that the 3-year-old Shakun-tala used to accompany him to the circus and often come back mesmerized with her father’s performances.

Her father introduced her to the world of mathematics and taught her interesting card tricks that initiated her love for numbers. It was while she was playing cards with her fa-ther at the tender age of three that he found his daughter’s calculation abilities. It turned out that she beat him not by sleight of hand, but by memorizing the cards.

She was able to answer all of his challenging mathematical problems, prompting him to call her a “Mathematical Wizard”.

On April 3, 2013, she was admitted to Bangalore Hospital after she complained of respiratory problems. Her health soon began to deteriorate after her kidneys failed and she breathed her last on April 21, 2013. She is survived by her daughter, son-in-law and two grand-children.
