YEARS AGO. when you were little, the future seemed so distant. 'way beyond next year someplace. Now that tha t distant future has arrived . there's still the future for the other little people in your life. Which is all by way of emphasizing that a trust with Ann Arbor Bank and Trust Company is one of the best ways to provide financial securi ty for that future. You don't have to be wealthy. you know. to benefit from a trust. All you really need is some foresight and belief that the future is coming.

director Charles Sutherland
This production marks Charlie's debut as a main-stage director for AACT. He directed previously for us this summer, however, in a workshop theatre production of Harvey.
Civic Theatre audiences are more familiar with Mr. Sutherland as an actor; he was "Big Jim" Warington in our last show, Little Mary Sunshine, and has been in Once In A Lifetime and As You Like It with the University. Charlie also sung in productions of Dames at Sea and The Fantasticks for MMM Productions.
He is also on the board of directors of AACT, he sings with the Ann Arbor Cantata Singers, and just to keep himself from getting too bored , he teaches third grade in the Detroit school system.
THE STAFF
Harriet Kirk (Assistant Director and Stage Manager) is a member of the AACT Board of Directors, and an accomplished stage technician. She has served on make-up crews for over forty shows, including those for AACT, the U of M Opera and Speech Department, and the Comic Opera Gu ild. Harriet also handles AACT's season promotion program.
William L. Schiefer (Scene Designer) comes to us from the Calumet Summer Theatre, where he has done the entire production design for Antigone, and costume and set designs for The Apple Tree, The Tavern , and Wait Until Dark. His acting credits include the role of Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and the Marquis DeSade in Marat! Sade.

213 S_ MAIN Ed Lesher (Pycraft) must have enjoyed his first appearance in front of the lights, as a
"body" in the curtain call of Arsenic and Old Lace last season. He had been a regular member of AACT's tech crew, but had not appeared on stage prior to that ; afterwards, he won the coveted AACT Cameo award for his Bai ley in The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail. Ed is a Professor of Aerospace Science at U of M, and owns several world altitude/endurance records in an airplane which he has designed , built, and flown.
Bette Ellis (Mrs. Springer) is a very busy person ; your program editor is amazed at the number of things Bette is doing at once. She teaches at Tappan Middle School ; she is a member of the board of St. N icholas Greek Orthodox Church; she represents AACT to the AA Council of the Arts; she has been a member of Civic for over twenty years. Her last AACT stage appearance was in Anything Goes.
Greg Yank (Gromler) was Harvey's friend, Elwood P. Dowd in our last summer season, but there is not truth to the rumor that a six-foot rabbit now lives in his office at the University Hospital. Greg's previous roles with us include a chorus part in Oklahoma! and several simultaneous parts in Under Milk Wood.
John Jarrett (Hopwood) was in Oklahoma! last year, and was one of those lucky actors who got to wait tables and sing in St. Joes Goes to the Movies. John was in our last production , Little Mary Sunshine, as Slim. He is a research associate at the University Medical Center.
Geverley J. Pooley (Gowand McGiand) is not, repeat not , a dirty old man . It is merely a coincidence that his roles seem to tend in that direction: Oscar in Little Mary Sunshine, Senex in Funny Thing/Forum, McGiand in this production. He has won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Awards from AACT in previous years, and according to his biographical form, is now "in decline" as the director of the U-M Law School Library.
Susan Molnar (Maid) is new both to Ann Arbor and AACT, but her credent ials are intriguing : she has been a member of L'Attroupement , a dance company in Strasbourg, France. Susan is a research assistant in the U-M Mental Health Research Institute.

Kathy Sanders (Geneva) is making her debut with AACT in this production. She is a graduate of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, having performed in You Can't Take It With You, A View From The Bridge, and No Exit. Here Kathy will begin teaching a beginning acting workshop at Art Worlds next month.
Thom Simonian (Tad) has a great many more lines than he did as Dusty in our Summer and Smoke in 1976. He is a graduating senior in Radio/TV at U of M, and a disk jockey at WCBN-FM. His previous roles include parts in Moonchildren, Goblin Market, Markowitz's Hamlet, and the PTP's recent production of Camino Real.
Carolyne Epstein (Mrs. Wilcox) has been in the chorus of several AACT musical productions, most recently Promises, Promises in 1975; this production marks her first speaking part. Carolyne is a freelance interior designer, and teaches interior design for the U of M Extension Service.

THE STAFF
Kathy Dwyer (Costume Designer) returns to AACT as costume designer after handling that job for our summer production of Harvey . Kathy is also a dancer, having appeared in Showboat, Funny Girl, and AACT's Oklahoma! last year. She is currently rehearsing in the Comic Opera Guild's Merry Widow.
Claudia Kerfoot (Properties) has saved AACT's collective life on properties more often than we can remember, specifically Oklahoma!, Fiorello , Annie Get Your Gun , and Barefoot in the Park. For AACT she has also served in the varied jobs of stage manager, assistant director, scene painter, and producer . She is also this year a member of our playbill selection committee.
Eileen Wilkinson (Lighting Designer) is a PhD candidate in theatre at the University , having received her MA from that same institution in 1971. She has taught high school speech and theatre , and has produced lighting designs for The Gentleman Caller, The Real Inspector Hound, and El Hajj Malik at the U of M.
Amy Vuolo (Makeup) has been a make-up speciali st for AACT for many shows , as well as for the U of M Music School Opera. AACT audiences will also remember her appearance in Promises, Promises in 1975.
Susan Morris (Producer) currently , in addition to the "simple" job of producing Spofford, is directing Gilbert and Sullivan 's Mikado . She aptly deserves the title of " Ms ." G and S, having directed and /or performed in and / or worked on nearly all of the society 's productions for many years. Susan is the vice president of AACT this year, and is the owner of Civic Theatre's Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Martha Brewste.r io Arsenic and Old Lace last season . Audiences thi s year saw her as Alma Winemiller in Summer and Smoke.

THE CAST
John Stephens (Spofford) last appeared in AACT's The Little Foxes and as a verymemorable Teddy in Arsenic and Old Lace. In 1974, John won the Best Supporting Actor Award from AACT for his portrayal of Chief Sitting Bull in Annie Get Your Gun. More recently, he has also appeared in Musket's Jericho and as Senex in Cocktail Playhouse's Forum.
Martha Krehbiel (Mare) was our Aunt Eller in last year's Oklahoma!, and prior to moving to Ann Arbor was active in community theatre in her previous home in New York. Ms. Krehbiel is a homemaker and a mother of five.
Jim Kane (George) has been a member of AACT for ten years; we last saw him as the oily Dr. Einstein in Arsenic and Old Lace. Other AACT productions Jim has appeared in include The Fantasticks, Mousetrap, The Brass and Grass Forever, and Rhinoceros. Jim is a reporter for the Ann Arbor News.
Aileen Mengel (Mrs. Crane) won our Best Supporting Actress Award for her portrayal of Dorothy in Any Wednesday, and last appeared before AACT audiences as Elvira in Blithe Spirit. She holds a degree in Speech and Drama from the University of Michigan, and teaches first grade at Lawton School.
Marie Gilson (Mrs. Punck) is a veteran AACTress , having worked with us since 1945. Her previous appearance with us was in 1960, in Sunrise at Campebello. Ms. Gilson played opposite Andy Devine in the last University Drama Season production, in 1964. In her life-long theatrical career, she has been Amanda in The Glass Menagerie, Regina Giddens in The Little Foxes, and Veta Louise in Harvey. Marie was also Grandma in this summer's production of The American Dream at AACT.
Joy Scarpuzza (Mrs. Beauseigneur) last appeared on AACT's stage, according to her biographical form, in an urgent appeal for somebody to move a car. Joy is AACT's head usher most of the time; she has appeared in our productions of Forty Carates, Blithe Spirit, and The Skin of Our Teeth.

DON'T JUST SIT THERE ...
Occupying a seat in the audience for our shows is one of the nicest things you can do for AACT- but it is certainly not the only thing.
Did you know that Civic Theatre has a continuing need for actors, technical crews, ushers, party throwers, party goers, and costume makers? And what is more, NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.
Bring us a little of your time and a willingness to try something you have never tried before and we'll give you in return a sense of satisfaction and a whopping good time. We have workshops in all matters of theatre, from dance to lighting design, and all of them are open to anyone who has the interest.
So if you've been out there in the house watching us have a ll the fun, come on! Our next show is Brlgadoon; you might Jearn the Highland FJing!
For specific details about our aud itions, workshops and special events, call us at 662-9405 or 662-7282, or visit our workshop at 201 Mulholland almost any weekday evening.
