CARE AND PRECAUTIONS

Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the surface of many stones (specifically calcium-based stones such as limestone, travertine, marble and onyx). Do not place hot items directly on the stone surface. Use trivets or mats under hot dishes and placemats under china, ceramics, silver or other objects that can scratch the surface.

STONE GENERAL CARE & MAINTENANCE

The application of a penetrating sealer for stain protection when installing natural stone is strongly encouraged. Apply a first application of sealer prior to grouting and a second application after grouting. Always follow sealant manufacturers’ application guidelines.

For stone that requires color enhancement, consider application of a color enhancer. Color enhancers may be applied to stone that has already been sealed. One-step sealing/color enhancing products are also available. It is always recommended to test samples prior to treating the entire installation.

Reseal stone as necessary. Resealing frequency will depend on traffic and use. It is important to properly clean the stone prior to resealing to prevent locking in existing stains or dirt. Showers, high traffic areas, exteriors and countertops may require more frequent applications.

Although the use of a high-quality penetrating sealer reduces the potential for deep, difficult-to-remove stains, note that sealing is not fail-safe. Spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible. Stone, like any other natural product, will age and patina, adding to its beauty and character.

Routine maintenance for stone includes sweeping or vacuuming to remove dirt, similar to wood floors or carpet. For heavier cleaning, it is recommended to use cleaners especially formulated for natural stone. Cleaners are available for general maintenance as well as heavy-duty cleaning and stain removal.


CLEANING PROCEDURES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

FLOOR SURFACES

Dust mop interior floors frequently using a clean, non-treated dry dust mop. You may also vacuum lightly, being careful that equipment does not scratch the stone.Sand, dirt and grit do the most damage to natural stone surfaces due to their abrasiveness. Mats or area rugs inside and outside an entrance will help to minimize scratches. Be sure that the underside of the mat or rug is a nonslip surface.

OTHER SURFACES

Clean stone surfaces with a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for natural stone. Use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces for best results. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids on marble or limestone. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Change the rinse water frequently. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.

BATH AND OTHER WET AREAS

In the bath or other wet areas, soap scum buildup can be minimized with use of a squeegee after showering. To remove soap scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover or a solution of ammonia and water (about 1/2-cup ammonia to a gallon of water). Frequent or overuse of an ammonia solution may eventually dull the surface of the stone.

VANITY TOP SURFACES

Vanity tops may need to have a penetrating sealer applied. Check with your installer for recommendations. A good quality marble wax or non-yellowing automobile paste wax can be applied to minimize water spotting.

FOOD PREPARATION AREAS In food preparation areas, the stone must be protected with an oil-repellent penetrating sealer. Use cleaning and sealing products recommended and safe for food preparation surfaces.

OUTDOOR POOL & PATIO AREAS

For outdoor pool, patio or hot tub areas flush with clear water and use a mild bleach solution to remove algae or moss. For heavy-duty cleaning, use of a concentrated cleaning poultice formulated for natural stone may be required.

SPILLS AND STAINS

Blot the spill with a paper towel immediately. Don’t wipe the area; it will spread the spill. Flush the area with plain water and mild soap and rinse several times. Dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat as necessary. If stains do penetrate, use of a concentrated cleaning poultice formulated for natural stone may be required.

antiqued A finish that replicates rusticated or distressed textures. Produced through mechanical or chemical means to simulate the naturally occurring effects of the aging process.

brushed A finish in which the surface is brushed to reveal unique characteristics of the stone. Veins, shells and denser elements of the stone become relief and the overall finish takes on a subtle sheen and soft texture.

bush-hammered A textured surface, produced by a mechanical process, that varies from subtle to rough.

honed A satin-smooth surface finish with little or no gloss, recommended for commercial floors.

polished A glossy surface finish that brings out the full color and character of the stone.

sandblasted A matte-textured surface finish with no gloss, finished by application of a steady flow of sand and water under pressure.

satin honed A finish between honed and polished allowing for a smooth surface with a subtle sheen.

split-faced A finish whereby the stone’s face has been broken on an approximate plane, revealing a dynamic fractured surface texture.
