Enjoy a hands-on experience in water media taught by experienced workshop instructors at a great facility in an extraordinary setting away from it all. With the Bay of Fundy, the Port of Digby and Historic Annapolis Royal all nearby, there is no shortage of plein-air locations. The Annapolis Basin Conference Centre has lots of classroom and conference areas along with cafeteria and lodging for those staying on site. Our objective is to help you identify your strengths, meet your artistic needs, and to help you develop a strong personal expression. It promises to be an inspiring week! This unique watercolour symposium is open to everyone. Our team of professional watercolour artists will offer diverse perspectives on watercolour and water media painting. Hands-on participation is a priority! This will be a fabulous experience for artists, from beginner to advanced, who are looking for something different and challenging. Forums will offer the chance for two-way communication. There will be presentations, demonstrations, excursions, slide shows, group critiques – and more!
Program Outline Monday Evening: Instructors and participants can get acquainted at an informal reception. Displays of art materials by various suppliers will be offered. Registration check-in will begin for those in attendance. Tuesday to Saturday: Enjoy a flexible selection of workshops, discussions, and field trips conducted by our stimulating instructors. You will be able to work with several different instructors during the course of the symposium. Course Schedule and Selection: Complete information and forms, including the workshop schedule for the week, will be sent to registered participants. Respond promptly – first come, first served! Evening Programs: A special presentation will be featured each evening by instructors, invited guest artists, historians, and entertainers. You won’t want to miss these exciting events. Facilities: The Annapolis Basin Convention Centre (ABCC), on the beautiful Bay of Fundy at Cornwallis, has graciously offered its large property and facilities for this symposium. Accommodations: Arranging accommodations may be done through the ABCC with the form included. Your Principal Instructors
Ann Balch CSPWC, SCA
New Brunswick’s Ann Balch, an elected member of the Canadian
Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC) and the Society of
Canadian Artists (SCA) is best known for her paintings of people.
Ann’s paintings have won prizes at the national level from both
organizations, including the 2004 Jarvis Award for Excellence in
Transparent Watercolour for Eye of the Beholder, which hung in
Governor-General Michaëlle Jean’s residence. Ann was invited to exhibit at the Fifth
International Watercolour Biennial, Mexico City (2002 – 2003).
Her work been profiled in l’Art de l’Aquarelle (2012, France) and Pratique des arts (2011,
France), in the international Art of Watercolour (2012), and International Artist publishers. She
was a finalist chosen from over 11,000 entries of The Artist’s Magazine (2008), and finished
among the top ten in American Artist Watercolor magazine (2006).
Ann offers “Painting Juliana”, a day-long step-by-step introduction to painting a watercolour
portrait of a young girl with flowers in her hair. Students will develop their own portraits of
Juliana, a good foundation for the workshop that follows, the “Portrait Coaching Workshop”,
where you’re invited to tackle that portrait you've always wanted to, using your own photo(s) as
reference. Ann will contact students after registering to identify typical problems they encounter
to customize the workshop for them. www.annbalch.com

Poppy Balser CSPWC.
Poppy Balser lives in Digby, Nova Scotia. She has always lived within reach of the ocean, and the Bay of Fundy is an endless source of her inspiration. She finds the surrounding seashores and landscape translate well into watercolour paintings, and makes an effort to frequently paint “en plein air” or out-of-doors on location.
Poppy is an elected member of the CSPWC. In 2014 her work was chosen for the CBC's
Sharing the View Calendar, and she was awarded the Artist's Choice award at the Montague Plein Air Festival. Poppy's paintings can be seen on her website www.poppybalser.com and at the Flight of Fancy gallery in Bear River, NS and at Amicus Gallery in Chester, NS. She also blogs about her work at www.poppybalser.com/blog. For this symposium Poppy will be teaching en plein air.
“I paint out doors as much as I can. Painting on location allows me to respond to my surroundings in a way that I otherwise could not. I find watercolour the perfect medium for capturing the atmosphere and light of my local environment. I attempt to show these things as I see them; striving to keep my paintings fresh and spontaneous with luminous colour.”
Poppy's workshop is open to people with all levels of plein air experience (including those who have never painted out of doors.) She will demonstrate how she works quickly to capture the scenes in front of her and will encourage students to do the same on their own projects.

Christopher Gorey CSPWC SCA
Christopher Gorey was born and educated in the United States and
graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art. After numerous painting
excursions to Atlantic Canada he moved to the small coastal village of
Ingonish on Cape Breton Island to take up painting full time. He still
resides there with his wife Lynn. The Goreys have two children.
His career flourished quickly with solo and group exhibitions across
North America. In 1981 and again in 1987, Mr. Gorey’s One Dollar
Commemorative coin designs were chosen by the Mint to be produced in
silver. His paintings have won awards at La Société Canadienne de l’Aquarelle, QC, The
Watercolour Art Society of Houston, TX, The Adirondacks National Exhibition of American
Watercolour, NY, among others.
Mr. Gorey works in oil and watercolour and his paintings, which reflect a feeling of light
and texture, not only depict the people and landscape of his adopted Cape Breton but other areas
of Eastern Canada as well. His work can be seen at Lynn’s Craft Shop & Art Gallery, Ingonish,
NS, Lyghtesome Gallery Antigonish, NS, AGNS Art Sales & Rental, Halifax, NS, Peggy's
Cove Jewellery & Gallery in Peggy’s Cove, NS, and The Spurrell Gallery, St. John’s, NL .

Karin Isenburg CSPWC
Karin has been painting for over thirty five years. She has taken a number of
courses in the Durham Region and Greater Toronto area including the Ontario
College of Art & Design. She has spent countless hours in private study through
Galleries and Libraries. Experimentation and a greater commitment has led to the
development of layering transparent and semi-transparent colour creating
luminosity and a rich depth of colour in her work.
She teaches watercolour and mixed media at Durham College in Oshawa, and
Meta4 Art Gallery in Port Perry. She is scheduled to teach in Winnipeg in 2015. Her work has
received numerous awards and has been shown in solo and group shows in Canada, USA and Mexico
The painting ROYAL GALAS was selected by the Southwest Art magazine for their Mixed Media
Edition in Feb 2013. Karin was a feature artist in the Aug 2013 edition of Watercolor Artist. Her
painting CLEMENTINES was selected and published in Splash 14: Light and Color, this past August
by North Light Books. Karin is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour
and the Ontario Society of Artists.
For the symposium this year she will be painting still life using her glazing technique. Check out
Karin’s website at www.karinisenburg.com .

Rex Beanland CSPWC started painting in watercolour as a young child and
has just never outgrown it. Something in that mysterious interaction between water and pigment continues to fascinate and inspire me. The nature of water is such that it can’t be controlled and, as a watercolourist, I must let go and enjoy the ride. I am rewarded for this by the many spontaneous surprises watercolour offers.
For the past 18 months I have concentrated on cityscapes. I paint them because I
love the energy of cities and am continually fascinated by people. My goal is to
capture the interactions between people and the places they live. I can often be found wandering the streets and
alleys, sketchbook in hand, capturing those fleeting interactions of everyday life.
I enjoy the challenge of drawing and painting the shapes of city life but I judge a work to be successful when it tells a
compelling story that draws the viewer in. For me it’s all about the story.
“The year 2013-2014 has seen an explosion of momentum in my art career. It’s like all my wanderings, explorations
and efforts over the past years just came to fruition this year.” www.rexbeanland.com
