A “Not So Senior Moment” By Martha Thorn

Norma Chue Worden was born in Kingston, Jamaica. At the time, Jamaica, an island country in the West Indies, was a British colony. Life in the tropics was not an easy one of continuous music and lush vegetation. “While we did not have to deal with cold winters, we had hurricanes and monsoon weather. World War II touched our lives as well and I remember vividly my family huddled around a small radio in a dark room, listening to the BBC war news.” Norma

recalled wartime island-wide shortages, such as water and food. “Rice and salted cod fish, staples in the West Indian diet, were not always available.” She was one of five children and, while growing up, she attended a public grammar school and private high school. Both were all-girls Catholic schools run by the Franciscan Sisters who are missionaries from Allegany, N.Y., to Jamaica. After high school, Norma attended St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y. The university was across the road from the convent that had once served as the Mother House for the sisters. The building was off campus and had been converted into a women’s dormitory when St. Bonaventure became co-educational. The sisters ran the dormitory which housed about 70 women from all four classes. “Because my classmates and I were in one of the early co-educational classes, we felt like pioneers,” and being at St. Bonaventure “was quite a change from the all-girl institutions.” She no longer had to wear a uniform, but had to buy warm clothing because of the frigid New York winters. She was a long way from home, living in a dormitory and happy to meet the other co-eds, especially the ones from nearby Buffalo, N.Y., who knew how to dress for the cold and the snow. Norma declared her biology major when she entered the university and “plowed right through” the curriculum, determined to return home and teach high school. Since tuition and room and board were expensive, she had a part-time job as a research assistant on campus during her four years of college. “I made fifty cents an hour,” she laughed, “and put it all away for warm clothing.” Norma had an older sister in the United States, whom she rarely saw during their college years. Her academic schedule kept her too busy to go visiting. She attended classes Monday through Saturday with lectures scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon which sometimes ran to 12:30 p.m. and biology labs scheduled from 1 – 4 p.m., which sometimes ran to 5 p.m. or later. As she lived off campus, Norma had all her meals in the dormitory except for lunch at the on-campus basement cafeteria that offered the basics – hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot cocoa, tea and coffee. On the occasions when she was homesick, Norma visited “Merton’s Heart,” a heart shaped clearing on a hill above the Allegheny River. It is named for Thomas Merton, the Trappist mystic who once taught at St. Bonaventure, and who spent time in this mountain-side clearing. She also visited other hills around Olean, N.Y., a city near the university. The hills reminded her of home, and they made her feel better. When she graduated from the university in 1964, Norma returned to Jamaica to teach at the same high school from which she had graduated. She taught the fifth form in the school’s British education system, which roughly correlates to the twelfth grade in the United States. After a year and a half of teaching she returned to St. Bonaventure to pursue a master’s degree in education, specializing in counseling and guidance. While completing her course work for her master’s degree, she married Robert Worden whom she had met at St. Bonaventure. They then moved to Arlington, Va., in 1967 so Robert could pursue his doctorate degree at Georgetown University while Norma wrote her master’s thesis. After he completed his course work and dissertation, they moved to Annapolis, Md., where they rented a house while he served two years as an Army officer at Fort Meade. Later, they bought a house in the Murray Hill area. “It wasn’t as expensive as it is now, thank God,” Norma noted, “as we bought a fixer upper.” The couple also bought their first car, which they needed for Robert’s commute to Fort Meade and to get groceries. “By living downtown, we could walk to school, church, stores, post office, and the bank, but there were no supermarkets downtown,” Norma said. “There was a Safeway where the Goodwill is today, a Magruder's occupied the Safeway store when it closed, but it relocated to the Parole Shopping Center. There also was Acme where the Shoppers grocery store used to be — all too far away to walk and buy groceries for a growing family.”

Page 5 Annapolis Senior Activity Center

After Robert completed his Army commitment, he was offered a job with the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He commuted to work on the Greyhound bus which ran along West Street and which had a stop near his office. “Then, we only needed the car for groceries and other such errands,” Norma said. As her husband concentrated on his career, Norma focused on raising their family, substitute teaching and volunteering. The three children — a daughter and two sons — attended St. Mary’s schools where Norma substituted teaching in all grades from kindergarten through high school. She also volunteered as a home room mother and worked with the parent-teacher associations. When an opening became available for a full-time position, she taught fifth grade for two years. Norma didn’t want a full-time job, but over the years, she did have two other part-time jobs—one at a copy shop on West Street for several years and then as a land researcher for the county for eight years. Norma became involved with the senior centers when a friend who taught at the Arnold Senior Activity Center invited her to his class and to see what the centers were all about. She did, and then she checked out the Annapolis Senior Activity Center when it was still in the Eastport Shopping Center. When the Annapolis activity center moved to the Bates Heritage Complex, Norma began taking many of the classes offered by Anne Arundel Community College. She enjoyed, and still enjoys the various classes, including tai chi, aerobics, French, Italian, music appreciation, opera, music and arts, computer, wine appreciation, and oceanography. She also began helping with the flea markets and bake sales, and in March 2019 she was elected to serve on the board of Annapolis Seniors Inc., the nonprofit organization that raises money for the center. An untiring advocate of the center, Norma says, “I’m willing to help wherever I’m needed. If there’s more to do, I’d like to do more.” She’s passionate about the centers because they offer so many activities geared to seniors. “So many seniors seem to stay at home, and that’s not good,” she says. “They need to get out of the house and interact with people and nature instead of staying inside and doing nothing.” Taking her own advice, Norma loves to travel. “My husband’s ancestors came from Switzerland, Germany, England, and Ireland, so we’ve visited all of those places and more. My family’s from China, so we’ve been there too. We’ve also taken small-ship cruises to Baja California and Belize, and make frequent visits to family in the eastern United States and Canada.” The faith and values that she learned from her parents and the Franciscan sisters in Jamaica were reinforced at St. Bonaventure and at St. Mary’s. Norma has led a busy and active life with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Neither rich nor poor, she is happy that her material needs are satisfied. The bills have always been paid, and she’s had the freedom and encouragement to accomplish the things that she’s really wanted to do, based on being cheerful, helpful, hopeful, and humble. Now we’re lucky to have her volunteering at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, one of seven senior centers in Anne Arundel County.
