Bixa orellana is an evergreen shrub or small tree, 2-8 m high; trunk up to 10 cm in

diameter.

Leaves spirally arranged, simple, stipulate, ovate, 7.5-24 × 4-16 cm, shallowly cordate

to truncate at base, longly acuminate at apex, green or dark green above, grey or

brownish-green beneath; scaly when young, glabrous; petiole terete, thickened at both

ends, 2.5-12 cm long.

The picture shows that methanolic extract of B. orellanaleaves possess significant diuretic activity by increasing

the total urine output and increased excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride levels. However, the activity was not comparable in terms of quantitative

activity elicited by standard drug. This could be due to the use of crude extracts. The isolation of active principles is needed for more significant activity.

B. Orellana exhibited significant hypoglycemic activities at different modes of sample administration. B. Orellana

lowered blood glucose level by 30.2 % when given 45 min before glucose load.

In this research, mice is injected by acetic acid that causing a pain. Bixa orellana leaf extract can reduce the

pain, so it has an analgesic activity.

The figure shows that ethanolic extract from Bixa orellana leaf can reduce the percentage of DPPH

significantly as the concentration of the extract become higher, although the antiradical activity is lower than

ascorbic and tannic acid.

From the abstract, it says that Bixa orellana leaves infusion at dosage 8.33 g/kgBW and 16.67 g/kgBW significantly decreased the SGPT concentration by

50.87±8.24% and 63.45±5.75% respectively post CCl4 hepatotoxic dose intoxicated. But, annatto leaves

infusion couldn’t repair the histological liver damage.
