FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK: Fellow Airstreamers’ First, I want to tell how honored I am to serve as your 2017-2018 President of the Virginia Unit 109. I look forward to setting and achieving goals this year. The election and in- stallation of officers took place in Front Royal at the Commonwealth Rally in September. Doug Doberer, our Past President, was our host. He and members of our unit did a great deal to make it a very suc- cessful rally. We had 25 rigs and 55 attendees that represented all state of Virginia units. Kay & Steve Lambert hosted a rally at Highland Haven this past weekend. That was very successful for all that attended. The Lambert’s provided many different activities around Floyd. There was a won- derful dinner in the club house on Saturday night with entertainment provided by Sam Barnard. Saturday afternoon was my first board meeting to layout my goals for the coming year. The directors were given certain tasks to help with bring value to your membership in the Virginia Unit. Some of those are in the area of rallies, caravans and maintenance workshops. You will be hearing more about it through the newsletter and the website. Please note the coupon for the Christmas Party on December 2 nd at the Babcock Inn in Appomattox. We hope that you will make a point of attending plus exploring the historical village of Appomattox. It promises to be a wonderful venue! The coupon and payment need to be in by November the 15th. In closing, I ask for your support in recruiting at least one new member to our unit this year. As you see offerings such as rallies and other activities please consider attending and bring a guest. I would also ask that you share ideas on how we can serve our member’s needs better. Your board wants to see our unit grow. My wife, Xan and I hope to meet each of you during the coming year! See you down the Road! • 2018REGION3RALLY

The 2018 Region 3 Rally site has been confirmed to be Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach.  Reservations can be made now, and we recommend that, as this location in years past has been very popular with our Virginia Unit members.

We understand that the official rally dates are April 25 – 29, 2018, which is Wednesday to Sunday.  We also learned that Section HH is to be favored, which, if you have been to a past rally there, know it is close to the building where activities are usually held. Thus we called a campground reservations number at 877-510-1413 and learned the following additional information, which you can confirm when you call.

Apparently Region 3 has reserved the entire Section HH for us Airstreamers beginning on April 22, and has obtained a special rate of  $52 per night for the 7 night period only, beginning on that Sunday, April 22.  Some sites have already been reserved by members.

Therefore, we have made our reservations for that 7-night period (arriving Sunday and leaving the following Sunday) and paid the required deposit, and selected Site 43.  A campground map can be found on the campground’s web site (www.oceanlakes.com) that you might want to look at before calling to familiarize yourself with the layout.  We recommend making your reservations now if you plan to attend and want to park in a cluster near other Virginia members.

Later, IF there is interest, we can consider meeting somewhere enroute for a night or two in advance and traveling in together in a caravan that Sunday.  Let us know if you have suggestions, such as locations.  Stay tuned.

  • 2018 VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH RALLYBing Crosby Stadium, Front Royal, VA

    September 21-24, 2017, were the dates t h a t 2 5 V i r g i n i a A i r s t ream t ra i l e r f a m i l i e s w i t h representation from all four individual WBCCI clubs in the s t a t e g a t h e r e d

together for the annual convocation to socialize, and for the specific purpose of installing the officers of each unit for the coming year. This year’s event was hosted by the VIRGINIA UNIT and was organized by Rally Chairman DOUG DOBERER. Bob & Linda Lee, Steve & Kay Lambert, Randy & Xan Rinehart, Jeff & Lee Cutright, Douglas & D.A. Powell, Gary & Lynn Brink and Jack O’Regan rounded out the Unit 109 contingent. While just a bit warmer during the afternoon hours than was hoped for, the weather co-operated just fine and sunshine was the norm for the entirety of the event. Our campsite was located in a large, grassy area adjacent to the Bing Crosby Baseball Stadium and attendees got back to basics by sharing water and electricity rally-style (i.e., the daisy-chain method). The water pressure and electrical service were very good. Chief parker JACK O’REGAN got everyone placed quickly, with utilities following soon thereafter.Thursday evening began the official events with a huge pot-luck supper held in one of the two available covered pavilions on-site. Many folks had seconds (and some even enjoyed thirds), but there were still left-overs. DOUG D. detailed what was taking place in town during the weekend and Region 3 1st Vice President JOHN LEAKE also spoke briefly.

Friday morning the SHENANDOAH VALLEY and the TIDEWATER UNITS treated everyone to a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage patties, bisquits and gravy. GREG HEUER even arose extra early to make sure that a full urn of fresh, hot coffee was available with the meal. In fact, he volunteered to repeat this task for the balance of the rally. BRAVO GREG!

The remainder of Friday morning and most of the afternoon were available for touring the local area (except for the Virginia Unit which held a business meeting). Late Friday afternoon the entire group gathered at ELEMENT, a very nice restaurant in the center of Front Royal, for much socializing and a delicious meal. JOHN LEAKE then conducted an informal installation of the 2018 unit officers. A jolly time was had by all.Saturday morning began with yet another delicious breakfast, served by the NORVA UNIT this time. Quiche was the focal point of the meal. While most folks had the balance of the day free to attend the BLUES & BREWS FESTIVAL in the town center, designated members from each unit attended a meeting with John Leake to discuss the possibility of merging all, or some, of the four individual WBCCI units in the commonwealth.Upon return to the campsite in the afternoon, the wafting smell of grilling burgers & weiners was definitely in the air. The VA Unit cooks were busy all afternoon slicing tomatoes & onions, lighting the grills, arranging salads in serving bowls, and getting ready for an old-fashioned BBQ supper. I don’t know exactly how many burgers and hot-dogs were consumed but the number was impressive! Immediately following the meal at 5pm, we were all treated to the musical talents of a local trio named FROM THE HEART. The reportoire of the lead singer and his ability to remember the lyrics to so many songs was truly amazing. During one of the band’s breaks, it was time for ICE CREAM and all the trimmings. Actually, 4 gallons of the tasty treat were scooped out that night. Then, it was back to the music. The toe tappin’ continued until 9pm when the band waved the white flag of surrender and called it a night. All in all, it was quite a day and most had no difficulty at all in obtaining a good night’s rest. (continued on next page)

  • Sunday morning began with (I’ll bet you can guess what) a toasted English Muffin and Bagel breakfast with the appropriate toppings, accompanied by yet another urn of delicious coffee prepared by Greg. This light meal was immediately followed by a moving Devotional Service conducted by LINDA & GREG HEUER of the Shenandoah Valley Unit. At the concllusion of the service, we all sadly agreed that it was time to break camp and journey our seperate ways until we meet again somewhere “down the road”. By the time all the trash was gathered and the electrical lines & water hoses were disconnected and coiled, the campsite was almost barren of aluminum. Many thanks are offered to Doug and all the Virginia Unit workers who made this event such an enjoyable time!

Recap: Doug reports that the Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department received a total donation of $1980. The collection taken at the Devotional Service resulted in $160, which was donated to House of Hope (this change was deemed appropriate because of the large sum already donated to the FRVFD). Aside from what individuals spent on their own, the Commonwealth Rally was responsible for spending approximately $4,200 in Front Royal, with $2,140 going directly into the hands of volunteer organizations. It was a fine event! Gary
