Blanchard, Becky. "THE SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE OF RAP & HIP-HOP CULTURE." THE SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE

OF RAP & HIP-HOP CULTURE. (1999). Web. 9 Mar. 2015.

This webpage article is from an educational website and used multiple sources to argue

their point. The author gives background information on the history of hip-hop and tells

what influenced it. The author argues that hip-hop is not to blame for the violent culture

of people, but that it was around way before hip-hop. This source has a point of view,

which is hip-hop is not to blame. The article is from an educational website so the author

has credentials. The purpose of the article is to communicate the reasons why hip-hop did

not create violence in people, and to show the positive outcomes. This does fit into my

research and was very useful, there are mostly negative things about hip-hop so this

makes an argument. This source will make it into my paper.

Neate, Patrick. "POETRY IN MOTION." RSA Journal 154.5534 (2008): 24-29. Print.

This journal explains the authors look on the influences of hip-hop. He mentions how

more than 70% of Americans say that hip-hop has a negative impact on the society. He

doesn’t agree with it and he uses facts and opinions to explain why. The author’s point of

view is that hip-hop does not have a negative impact. The source is through the university

so it is a creditable source. It has reliable information and is an academic journal. This

source was helpful with giving facts about the positive influences of hip-hop, much like

another one of my sources. It has helped shape my understanding by giving more positive

examples of the influences. This source will appear in my project.

Pinckney, Charles. "The Influence of Hip-Hop Culture on the Perceptions, Attitudes, Values,

And Lifestyles of African-American College Students." (2007). ProQuest Dissertations &

Theses. Web. 9 Mar. 2015.

This academic journal uses a variety of sources to point out the impact of hip-hop. It

describes the positive and negative influences that hip-hop have on African American

young adults. The potentially negative influences are also discussed. The author points

out more negative influences then positive, but does include the good things from hip-

hop. They say that the bad parts seem to flourish and the good struggles. The article made

up of many sources, but the author’s assumptions are listed. This was a well written paper

wrote by a graduate student at Walden University in the School of Psychology who

conducted research. It was revised and reviewed by professors at the school. The author

used creditable resources that were cited. The journal wasn’t biased except for the part

where the author gives his assumptions. The quality of this source was very good. The

information is reliable and is an academic journal. It was written in 2007, which isn’t

very current, but is current enough for this topic. This source was very helpful and

thorough and I trust it will be very useful in my project.

Sanneh, Kelefa. "Don’t Blame Hip-Hop." The New York Times. The New York Times, 24 Apr.

2007. Web. 9 Mar. 2015.

This source is from the New York Times and is a developed article from a popular source. The

article is mainly focused on specific events that had recently happened and certain artists. It

notes how there are three words that people do not want in hip-hop and the new songs from

that time were more cheery than the past songs. They used that to make the point that even if

the lyrics change, the problems wont, concluding that hip-hop doesn’t matter and is not to

blame. I believe that the author is a little biased toward hip-hop not being to blame. The article

does have facts, so it is reliable. The targeted audience could be anyone that listens to hip-hop

music, and even those that have a problem with it. This is a popular source from a newspaper.

Like the other sources it defends hip-hop. This article fits into my research, but wasn’t too

useful. Most of the information was not broad enough and was too focused on a certain event,

but parts of it were helpful and will be used in my project.
