T h i s b ib l i og raphy lists t h e Russian-language encyc loped ias and encyc loped ic d i c t i o n a r i e s pub l i shed i n t h e S o v i e t Union du r ing t h e p e r i o d 1944-1974. It does n o t c la im t o be complete , however, because t h e d i s t i n c t i o n between a d i c t i o n a r y and a n encyc loped ic d i c t i o n a r y is o f t e n exceed ing ly d i f f i c u l t t o make, and works belong- i n g t o t h e l a t t e r c a t ego ry may w e l l have s l i p p e d through t h e compi le r ' s n e t . The m a j o r i t y of t h e works i n c l u d e d h e r e a r e accom- pan ied by a n n o t a t i o n s , and i t is hoped t h a t t h e s e w i l l p rov ide a l l who a r e i a t e r e s t e d , and p a r t i c u l a r l y t h o s e hav ing l i t t l e o r no knowledge of Russ ian , wi th a good i d e a o f what t h e works i n q u e s t i o n have t o o f f e r i n t h e way o f i n f o r m a t i o n and how they rnay most e a s i l y be used.
