STATION, MPUMALANGA PROVINCE
NOTICE OF BASIC ASEESSMENT AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS
The proponent, Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, is proposing the installation and operation of a Reverse
Osmosis (RO) Plant for ash process water treatment at the Matla Power Station, Mpumalanga
Province. The RO plant will be contained entirely within the Matla Power Station property boundaries
(Portion 4 of Bakenleegte 84).
Matla Power Station is situated approximately 60km south of eMalahleni, 4km south-west of Kriel
Power Station and 12km west of the town Kriel. The proposed activity falls within the jurisdiction of
the eMalahleni Local Municipality and within the greater Nkangala District Municipality.
BASIC ASSESSMENT PROCESS
The proposed installation and operation of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant requires that an
application for Environmental Authorisation (EA) be submitted to the Department of Environment,
Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) (previously the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA)) as the
Competent Authority (CA). In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental
Management Act (NEMA), Act No. 107 of 1998 as read with Government Notices, R324-327 (as
amended), a Basic Assessment (BA) process is required for this project. The following activities are
being applied for through this process:

Savannah Environmental (Pty) Ltd is undertaking the required BA and public participation processes
for the project on behalf of the proponent (Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd), in order to identify and assess
all potential environmental impacts associated with the project for the area as identified, and the
recommendation of appropriate mitigation and management measures to be included in the
Environmental Management Programme (EMPr).
The department and/or the organisation which you represents has been identified as a commenting
authority for the proposed project. In this regard, please can you provide us with the name and
contact details of the relevant contact person at your department who we would liaise with
regarding this project.
By registering on the project database, you will receive all information relating to the project and will
be provided with an opportunity to provide comments and input into the BA process.
Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require additional information and/or clarification
regarding the proposed project at this stage. Our team welcomes your participation and looks
forward to your involvement throughout this process.
